Hello World Simba!

Wizzup?

2009-12-27 14:47:07

It is Christmas time! and thus the best time to hand out a present to the community.

Introducing: SIMBA

Raymond, Wizzup?, BenLand100, Markus, Nielsie95, Bullzeye95, Cazax, Boberman, NxTitle and Nava2* have been working on their own Color Macro program: Simba.
* There are many more developers

What is Simba?

Open Source

Simba is Free Software!, and therefore comes with full source code. Everyone can see how it is constructed and learn from it. It is your next step to a successful programming career. You are free to modify it to fit your (or SRLs) needs.
Yeah!

Cross Platform

Simba is available for Linux and Windows. A lot of stuff has been directly developed on Linux. Mac support is coming next year.

Object Oriented

The code behind Simba, also known as the Mufasa Macro Library (MML) is Object Oriented. This means the code is highly readable, but also very maintainable; just like SRL. The MML also ships a lot of extra components which you can use in your own programs and scripts.

A Macro Program!

Shipped with a cross platform library, the MML, Simba will soon be suited for your daily macro activities! It already contains a lot of features, and more are being added.

Actively Developed

We current are maintaining Simba actively, and hope to be able to do so in the future. We may not always have time, but you too can work on it; because the code is 100% open source. Simba has had working OCR (from MML) for quite some time now, and it has also survived the recent RuneScape uptext update.

Well Documented

Simba and the MML strive to be well documented. There are many documents under constructions, and we will maintain them thus making it easy for everyone 'hop on' and start developing. We will also introduce a bugtracker for this project.

Not just Pascal!

The MML and Simba are both written in Free Pascal, but will get binding to other languages at some point. Python is planned, but since MML and Simba are fully open source, you can write bindings for virtually every language. We know some people favour other languages, and understand it is important to let them use their own language.

Still in development…

Sadly, we believe that Simba is not yet suited for general purpose macroing. There are bugs in the program we have to fix, so currently we are not handing out a binary just yet. The code however may be available soon.

In need of testers!

Simba is in need of testers! Do you want to participate and help? We may just be able to use your help…
Send me (or Raymond) a PM!

For now,
Hakuna Matata…

Well you don't want me to write down all the differences between the two programs. It's the same as "How does Open Office differ from Microsoft Office".

But to answer your question: The philosophy, the compiler used, the way the program is maintained, the way the GUI looks, the way it's made up, etc..

Well it is aimed to do the same thing as scar, correct?

Thus it needs these same features to operate…

EDIT: This is heaps better than my Color Macro program well done!!

Also if thsi does replace SCAR will the current SRL Libary work with it. If not will MML take over the SRL Libary and if so copy things from SRL to MML?

Yeah! We took the closed source app, ripped it apart, put it in a different compiler and called it Simba!

cycrosism

2009-12-27 19:22:51

Just looking at the screenshot it is a total rip off of scar. SRL is based on scar yet you want to create another program for macroing. Why would you want to do this

NiCbaZ

2009-12-27 19:26:44

Im guessing because with scar its only 1 great mind working on it, and with simba it can have mant great minds wokring on it, and its opened source, works on multi os'es.. etc..

cycrosism

It will work on multi os's? It works on *nix just fine. I installed wine, windows java binaries, I was able to use SMART to auto on it. No problems what-so-ever

For the reasons stated in the first post. Maintainability and Education.
However, my reason to participate in this project is to educate the people who are interested, although a great deal is also just having fun, learning new stuff.

Why are you so offensive, cycrosism? Freddy suggested this himself.

14:34 < Freddy1990> jimmy_mac: If people want it open-source so badly, why don't they write it themselves?

It looks like SCAR? Well, what did you expect? What is a color macro without a color picker, without a window selector?
Those are just basic features, it's like saying Paint and GIMP are the same, because they both load an image and allow you to edit them.

Try picking a Native Linux window with SCAR in Wine.

Finally. I like this much better than constant nagging about the direction of SCAR. The thing that really interests me is the multilanguage-binding-thing. Not that i would end up using it, but it could be nice to practice…doing the same thing in different languages and working up from there seems like nift. I just dont see how the different things in each language would all mesh together to still work under the same roof. Like C++ and pascal and Whitespace dont seem like they would work together.

From what I understand now SRL 5 will be at least initially developed for Simba, although porting it to SCAR is a matter of doing some Replace-Alls on a few function names.

Of course since Simba is open-source, I wouldn't be surprised if it got some radically new ideas from random people that SCAR wouldn't have for awhile :)

I don't see this replacing SCAR anytime in the near future, although maybe some day years from now it will be all we have, and at that time it will have been around long enough to be dependable.

IMO until then it looks like a fun tool, used for random things/ education purposes… maybe a few specially made scripts or two.. but nothing more.

I think it's funny how we are arguing, we really shouldn't be. SRL wouldn't be what it is today if it wasn't for SCAR, which thanks goes to Freddy for still developing it. Simba is just another advancement for SRL.

Myles, you say that SCAR is way behind other communities, and yes that is true, but Freddy works hard. You obviously can't be patient or think of the fact that he has more to do than just developing SCAR. If it's too far behind for you then make your own?

From what I understand from this is, that SMART works with Simba but it's still going to be closed source. And even if SMART is closed source, it works and you really can't complain about it. Again, if you don't like it then make your own.

I think the only thing that needs to be discussed is how awesome this will be, and congratulations for the people working on it. That's my two cents.

If people continue to make scripts in the pascal script that is in the screenshots, then there wouldnt really be a divide between the community. They're essentially the same general thing. If they make Simba to radically different, then they lose backwards compatibility which everybody was freaking out about when Freddy changed the syntax of a few functions in SCAR. So logically from past precedent, SRL5 shouldnt be so different that they would lose mass backwards compatibility, which would then limit Simba in its ability to be different. Not that it really should be different. If it ends up being an opensource SCAR, then thats fine, and then thats great because it won't split the community.

MylesMadness - "why support a buggy program" "do you think it will be buggy in a few months?" - ermm…thats kind of the point of SCAR 3.5. But i doubt you'll make it for 3.5 now will you?

I'd like to comment on other things but i doubt many people will read this or respond to it, so thats it.

Many people wanted reflection and they made a reflection include, however it wasn't an SRL include but rather another one. As I said, SRL can't survive as a reflection community because we are an old folks home if we run with your peculiar example - most of us can't use computers and the couple that can aren't (for whatever their reasons may be).

Anyway, I disliked the idea of Freddy breaking backwards compatibility with 3.5 if he was only going to re-break everything again when 4 was released - it seemed a bit silly to have 3.5 as a step in between 3.2x and 4 if it was only going to be different and incompatible with both. But anyway, this isn't about Scar.

I have my doubts. People are not `loyal' to a program, but to a community. SRL is a community. If SRL decides to go with Simba; I don't think many people will use SCAR just for the sake of using it, especially if SRL may no longer be compatible.

I understand where Myles is coming from, although I disagree with the way he put it.

As I have stated in my first post. This will hopefully be easily maintainable, and you won't have to wait weeks on that one developer. There are others, and if they are busy too, you can fix it yourself.

ManFlardin, SRL 5 will not be fully backwards compatible. There are very few working scripts at the moment, and changing a few things in an active script isn't hard either.

SRL 5 will be made specifically for Simba, although it is very similar to scar in terms of syntax and so on.

On backwards compatability, we will not be trying to make it compatible to SRL 4 although we are aiming to make a smooth change. Scripts will break with SRL 4 -> 5 just like they broke from SRL 3 -> 4.

Also, SRL will be for Simba where the function names are/might be different and have different parameters.

I do not think this will happen. Sure there will be some who will want to use scar but I don't think there will be much. Why? Because people mainly come here from runescape and not from scar. They mainly come here to auto in runescape and not to write cool non-rs scripts in scar. And when they come here from rs they download scar directed from here. Yes they are mainly leechers and most of them will remain that but some of them will be interested in learning so on and so on. So if SRL will be for Simba they will download that, not much of a change(in their views).

And I do not want to continue the arguing(I have my own opinions, don't worry) so I just say I respect Freddy and scar but I would like to use Simba instead of that in the future for scripting.

EDIT: Of course just my view.

Because reflection doesn't work. There's a handful who know what they are doing because reflection isn't just using reflection, it's also producing the hooks for it. Using it is easier, but taking about the client to get the hooks isn't and if it was super easy, then it would probably be different. Imagine if SRL had gone fully behind reflection - do you honestly think the community would still be here after over a month of being unable to macro at all?

I think this description fits me, so I'll jump in here…

My personal belief is, I get a good sense of security knowing that I am not having to "Open Up" the RS Client when macroing…..I have heard the arguments, on how safe it is, but I believe, if you simply don't do it, then you are taking that out of the equation, and that is one less thing to potentially be banned for….

If you wish to use other methods, I.E. Reflection, no one is stopping you, just know, that this community is based off of "Color Finding Routines", and devolping these functions, will always be priority, there is already a section set aside for devolping this… Reflection Tutorials , so I would say there is no basis in arguing that it isn't accepted, nor embraced, because it obviously is by some.(I have done work in the past gathering location Information on all Current Active Randoms via Reflection(KYAB), so it's not that I am against using it, just prefer not to).Even if it was working :p

I agree , with Simba being Open Sourced, expect to see some new Radical Ideas !!!

Thanks for ALL the Hard Work !!!!

So, who's stopping you from moving to RSBot's community? Nobody. If you aint happy here, get out…

Both ways of cheating have their cons and pros… Only stupid people don't get it how smart it actually is to use color-based macros. ..+these macros work for other games too, does RSBot or NeXus work? Nope, not a chance. And how about this, can you make anything else with em (useful/non-useful [utilities, games, etc.])? No? If RuneScape ever goes down (it's not gonna happen anytime soon, I know! Just an example - and yes, I also know this community is mostly based on cheating in RuneScape.) those bots are more than useless JUNK after it.

These universal color-based macros can be used for other games. Meaning these will have a looooooong, loooooooooooooong "life" (have had already!). I mean, just look at how many bots have died while SCAR, as an example, has survived for this long (and it keeps going strong). I am fairly sure SIMBA will last almost "forever", now that it's gonna be Open Source - as it certainly will get a nice support by community for it, much better than SCAR has ever had, with a single developer around it… & no, I have nothing at all against Freddy with these comments (my personal opinions)… I am very happy for everything he has done for SCAR, but I just must admit there could have been more updates within all these years for it.. Yes, a lot has been added by him (Freddy) for it, but with a "team" of developers, or like in SIMBA - community!, there would have been much more added in it. +bugs would have been tracked down and fixed waaaaay faster. Anyhow, I hope a great success for both, SIMBA and newer SCAR's (3.50, 4.0, x).

[ONTOPIC.]
Just curious, so some questions, to current developers - before the source is gonna be out for the community:

-is anykind of multithreading capabilities planned for it?
-can scripts be compiled?
-support to forms and canvases?
-will it be _universal_ color macro? (Meaning, it's not targetted only around RuneScape..)
-support for includes?
-built-in update system? Not like in SCAR, where everytime there is an update, you gotta reload the program (+ uninstall and install again).

Thanks,

I'll answer to your list with a list of my own. :)
  • You can run one script per tab, so in a way, the application is already multithreaded. If you mean by actually multithreading a color find to make it faster, no. That is not implemented. I don't know of any active plans to do so, either. It would be quite an overhead too. If you mean allowing your own script to use multiple threads - the answer is "partially"; see the next point.
  • Yes, you will be able to compile scripts to .exe's, with a bit more work. This will give you the power to use the MML + every single Free Pascal/Lazarus component out there, including threading, and cool forms.
  • There is some form support. Currently PascalScript stills needs some work to function 100% correctly, and this also affects form support.
  • Yes, but it will also include some runescape specific functions. Although we could easily put that into a module or plugin of some kind.
  • Yes. Includes are supported.
  • Yes. There will be an (auto) updater. It is unavoidable that you have to restart the program (unless there is only a font or similar update), but I don't see why you would have to reinstall it.

Some other general notes I'd like to make… Regarding Pascal Script… It works quite well on Windows, but it really needs some work on Linux. The maintainer of the product is aware of this, but I don't see him fixing this anytime soon. PascalScript isn't a trivial product, so chances are it won't be easily fixed. This is for 32 bit (which will also run on 64 bit OS'es).

There is a lot more functionality currently in MML than you all may expect. We've mainly been adding stuff to Simba lately.

I hope to set up a forum soon for testers, and other interested parties. I've been a bit busy the last few days, and haven't had much time to arrange stuff.

Oh, by the way… I personally call it "Simba" and not "SIMBA"; but both names are fine I guess. :D

Does that first statement imply that Simba as a viable macroing option in the near future is unlikely? I didn't originally know what to expect as I haven't known how long it has been in development. I'm not sure where I should be raising my expectations from, though I'm sure I'll see for myself soon enough.

The first statement implies that we actually have more functionality implemented than most have expected. So this means it is a viable option in the near future. I do guess that it will take at least a few weeks from now before we can provide a binary to the public which would be stable enough for the average everyday macro task. (Which is why we need testers)

No acronym? Well, I've been pondering about some… The name has always been a point of discussion, but for now we just call it Simba. SIMBA is fine too, but I don't think anyone has come up with a suitable acronym just yet, although I'm personally hoping on a recursive one. :)

SCAR will and always be #1 Rs macro program for me.
I'll probably use Simba for stuff like clubpenguin:redface:

The way I understand it. Once SRL 5 comes out it will only be compatible with SIMBA. So if you are wanting to use SCAR as your '#1 RS Macro Program' you will have to maintain your own include to be compatible with SCAR.

Correct me if I am wrong…

Yes, but it's mostly renaming functions to "convert" it since Simba will try to be more structured in the naming (at least from what I've been hearing, it's not certain yet). At least for now, the SMART is identical to SCAR's (although we have a Linux library for it :))

At least for now, then, SMART will be buggy and unreliable? As well, does that mean it will continue to be compatible with Scar as well as Simba?

Although when its completely done, 99% bug free. Its going to be the best Macro tool IMO.

We aren't sure. It does support forms to an extent, but we try to stay away from them as much as possible. Forms are about the only thing that can easily crash the app. (Just like you can easily crash SCAR with forms)

If you want to do some real form stuff, I suggest you code in Free Pascal (with Lazarus).
Adding an entire Form Editor would be overkill, and a bitch to make. (AFAIK Kaitnieks never paid for it either, he just used one.)

We could implement Lazarus' form editor (it's free after all!). However that would be lots of work to implement, so I might just suggest to avoid forms or create one with Delphi/Lazarus form editor.

and assuming form editor wont happen, which i dont particularly care about, Wizzup mentioned forms not being completely supported. I hope this wont be permanent as yes, forms can crash SCAR, but i cant really think of any (minus .5 instance) instances where if one's code is correct, the form will crash.

Currently there is a lot of testing (and solving…;)) being done already. Unfortunately most reported bugs are still GUI related. (Probably easier to test)
I hope the testing of the real `core' will start soon, as the GUI is maturing.

There are also finally some changes to Pascal Script, which fix some of the bugs on Linux, but it's still not stable enough to pass all my tests. So most core testing will be done on Windows.

It seemed like an okay way to keep track of who actually wants to try it, but once it's a bit more feature complete and stable it will be opened up to everyone. We haven't really been too secretive with it. All the links etc are public, so it's more an symbolic matter I guess. Although I also don't want everyone to think it currently is a ready-to-go program, so it should be made a bit hard to get your hands on, for now.

Freddy's still working on SCAR, and he's not going to give anyone else the source (no matter how many times people ask him to). But people wanted an open-source alternative, so that's what Simba is.

It doesn't matter if he is offended or not. He has nothing to do with this project.

Simba was started to provide a program that would provide a stable macroing base for SRL (and other projects) on all platforms. It is also a project to spread education, by providing the full source code of the programs to everyone. No hiding stuff from you guys, no secrets, no crap.

Simba still has a long road to go, but the future looks bright.

I'm just wondering if its completely wise to break away from SCAR. Especially since Luna is apparently on the way, if much of the reason for this is for stability as you seem to imply through the bold text, then there really wouldn't be a large difference between SCAR and Simba other than the open sourciness (and plug-ins that change the program, though i seem to remember Freddy saying that would be added in 4 or 3.5) because the point of Luna is stability. And since the majority of the community doesn't particularly care about it being open sourced (even if they say they do(since most will not look at the source(or if they do they won't properly look at it/wont compile it themselves.))), then it makes even less sense. I'm all for choices which means i accept the idea of Simba, but really Simba wouldn't be giving any choices. It would be simply switching from SCAR to Simba, and forcing all users into one group.

Has more to say, probably shouldn't until someone replies to this.

i'm up with that. and having it open source isnt about compiling (well for some people it is.but not for others.)…sometimes people just want tohave something even though its almost no use to them. and being open source its crossplatform and can have almost any language put into it. unlike scar which is pretty much pascal. so more people will be able to contribute. SCAR on steroids.

Dan Cardin

2010-02-03 21:28:16

afaik its no more cross platform than SCAR and it wouldnt make sense to put any other language in Simba, though they can indeed make mml a plugin though, which is useful in theory but i doubt that feature will be well used by the general populous either.

SCAR itself can't be used on Linux/Mac OS X without wine/whatever. Simba can (apparently.. I dunno since I haven't tested it on my laptop which runs ubu, nor one of my many desktops that run XP/Vista/Win7..). And it says it's more "language-friendly" on the first post, but it doesn't really matter, does it? This community is based on the Pascal interpreter SCAR, so it's not like it'll be a big change to just open up the files with Simba.. And you can open .scar files with Simba as far as I know.

Sorry if that's totally irrelevant.. :p

Simba functions may or may not work the same as SCAR functions. Also may have different names.

No guarentees there.

I'd also like to point out that Simba is not alone, its the MML as well which *will* be able to be used in other languages to produce frontends and other color bots.

Simba is a big part, but also small part of the project.

Not to mention that the manual will be updated continually and actively maintained!

wat? Stable, as in, the program wont throw DIB errors and access violations and shit randomly, when you do as little as try to open a file/close a new tab. Because if it does, someone will have the knowledge and have the ability to fix it, unlike with SCAR now. And stable as in, because its open source, it will always be able to be updated. Even if Wizzup's boat sinks, and all the devs and mods commit suicide, someone will be able to come along and work on it. It's not about simply having a choice…its about not having to rely on one single person for one broken program they dont know how to fix in order to function as a community.

And we're not forcing anyone to use anything - if you want to continue using SCAR, by all means, continue using SCAR. You'll have to write your own SRL, though. :)

No offence, but I don't really see why Luna would be any more stable than any previous SCAR. It's still the same only person working on it. It's still limited to one platform. Its still maintainable by one person only. Its implementations are still limited to one mind.

What's the difference really? I recommend you don't get your hopes up that much. I'm not saying Simba will be shining with stability, but I really think it is plain stupid to assume that SCAR 3.5 will suddenly be more stable than any previous versions.

Sure, ill use SIMBA, but if SRL won't implement reflection, then what's the point in accepting this change?

I won't forget SCAR, for one thing because it was what i learned on, but another would be because it was a light in a dark cave after the best time to bot.

Well I must say I disagree with you.
Freddy1990 didn't 'make us', if anybody deserves that honour its kaitnieks who wrote the first version of scar and maintained it until version 2.03

SRL existed and worked very well with scar 2.03, it was a thriving community that could easily support autoing many things. If Freddy1990 hadn't restarted development of scar we would have just continued more-or-less as normal.

Well, the fact that it is apparently being mostly rewritten is what makes it more stable. One person vs many people does not inherently mean unstable vs stable so thats completely silly as an arguement. Not saying that Simba will be less stable either, but i just dont see much if any benefits from completely breaking away from SCAR. Actually trying to collaberate with Freddy to try and keep some continuity between the two, or enough to make scripts compatible with a mode or something in one of the programs. Rather than you both saying "oh its the other person's problem" it might be nice to at least make it seem like this isnt a personal thing against Freddy rather than a simple wanting of options.

Well, since Freddy wants to lose SRL (Last thing I heard) I don't see the big issue. And I actually do believe that one person vs many people makes a difference. I have a serious doubt that Freddy wants to support SRL. If he wants, then that's fine. If he doesn't, then that's fine too.

The real reason is not that we're ``afraid'' of SCAR being better; but if we want to make SRL properly we'll have to mod a lot of the (internal Simba/SCAR) functions, they way they work, they way are named, etc. If Freddy decides to follow, I really don't mind if there are some slight compatibility fixes for SRL to it can be used with SCAR, but those fixes won't be coming from me.

That being said; as I've stated previously, this isn't some personal vendetta against Freddy. In fact, if he wants to work on Simba he's welcome to do so. I'm simply creating the possibility for everyone to work on something, rather than depend on one person.

It still needs some more testing and features - but an alpha (most likely beta) release can be expected within a few weeks. There are a few reasons I haven't been able to do a lot of testing lately.
1) Work, Study/School, Life.
2) PascalScript isn't fully operational on Linux yet, but it works on Windows. As I am mainly on Linux, I have to do all the testing in a VM/Wine, which is kind of annoying at times.
3) Other people who work on it lead busy lifes too. :p

Summary: Some sort of release in a few weeks, but may not work on Linux. (Well, the actual program will work, but you wouldn't for example be able to use TPointArrays outside the script; which makes it impossible to call stuff like FindColors)

Yes, it is in the source repos, called libcpascal. You can also set what interpreter to use in the settings.

From what I recall, it was similar to reflection (reflection is like what RSbot uses, with tiles and IDs and everything, right? :p), so couldn't it be another supported feature, like reflection is (was..) in SCAR? :D That'd be super cool, and another way for people to learn more. :)

:> Well that's awesome.

That raises another question; what determines compatibility? Are only certain languages going to be compatible? I wouldn't expect EVERY language to be compatible, as most would be useless (to some extent), but are there going to be certain restrictions? Like in SCAR you can only have a few, right? C*, Delphi, Pascal, uhh.. I think that's it.. But you get my point, I hope.

Plugins are generally portable. If you do it right, you can do it in any language. But since Pascal uses some weird types you may have to fiddle a bit with the types. Sooner or later it may be rewritten in C++, which will make it a lot more portable.

We mainly need people who have time to mess around with Simba, and give their ideas on what it is supposed to look, what features are logical, what ones aren't etc. :)

This is an interesting development - I've had a degree to focus on so really haven't managed to get a chance to do any developing, but from previously I really thought SCAR had to have some changes made to it.

It's a great tool but there are many things it's been lagging behind in which could of greatly improved it. Simba seems to catch up on these from the looks of things, object-oriented is always a great touch and cross-platform is fantastic!

I'm slap bang in the middle of exams at the moment so don't have a chance to take a look at it development-wise, but great job! :)

Considering it's your website, Wizzup, I presume you know that everyone has access to the Simba installer off of that? - Unless I'm missing the point of people requesting access here. ;)

Access is mainly for the forums (on SRL here), to discuss Simba and such. It's a nice way to keep track of who is interested. It's intentional that everyone can download the installer if they want to. There's no point in trying to restrict access.

Simba already takes up two spaces in the taskbar with the cmd prompt and the actual interface, so I was wondering if you'd consider taking the icon out of the icon tray. Not that it isn't sexy or anything, it's just that it's a little lot! (Not to mention when SMART's running)

Simba is public now isn't it? There's no more need for "testers" as you can test and give feedback already (or am I missing something?)

Added. But you're probably one of last we'll add, seeing Simba will go public in the next week.

The public release should be in a few days; Wizzup? is (or is just getting back?) from being away with some friends. He's going to add/fix a few things and push a "final" revision for the current testers to test and give feedback on. After a day of testing, the public release should happen.

i feel like i've been hearing that the public release is only a few days away now for something like a month (or a few weeks at least).

Any word on Python being put into this? I am very fluent in Python and would prefer to program in it.

Simba will never have Python support.
We have been working on making a library of MML for use in other languages. (libMML)
And a header package called pyMML.

Actually, we might still integrate it with Simba. At least with basic syntax highlighting + starting a script.

Wizzup, are the plans still on to develop it so it will work with Macs?

At this point SMART won't start with Wine + a Mac…

So I took quite an extended break. When I left we didn't even have reflection and were still using SCAR by Freddy1990. What exactly happened to Divi and all that Wizzup??

We dropped support for SCAR in favor of Simba because of Freddy1990's choice of not open-sourcing the project (afaik).

SCAR is still alive and kicking strong [HERE], but it's not supported anymore by SRL.
Simba is an open-source alternative, which is developed by SRL community. :)

Sort of correct; Freddy did all closed source, and so no one else could help in the fixing of the bugs that we experienced. At that particular time, we couldn't even OPEN SCAR without errors popping up, so the community needed a better alternative that everyone could help develop.
