Simba Release!

Friends,

today is a special day, as it marks the first public Simba release.

So what is Simba? This is largely covered in other threads such as the official Simba announce thread.

In short:
Simba is the ultimate Macro Engine. A quick summary:

  • Simba is free to the bone; you don't have to pay anything for it and you can discover exactly how it works. It is open source.
  • Cross platform. Simba 0.91 is only for Windows, but there are already versions of Simba on Linux, and Mac support is hopefully following.
  • Actively developed; it is still under heavily development; so don't be amazed when you see regular updates that touch core features of Simba (the GUI).
  • Open minded. We welcome all sorts of criticism and ideas.
  • Documented. There is documentation on how to use Simba as well on how Simba actually works.
  • Extensible; you can write your own extensions (or plug-ins, depending on how you want to call them) for Simba. You don't need anything but Simba to do this; and the extensions can vary from updaters, little user interface enhancements, to powerful tools like DTM editors.
  • Simba is stable and quite fast
  • Upcoming support for other programming languages.

Simba features:

  • Run multiple scripts
  • Code hints and completion
  • Colour Picker History
  • Auto updates
  • Handful of useful tools to aid you while scripting.
  • Full access to all settings

… and much, much more.

The Simba installer can be found here, along with zips of a Simba folder in the same directory. The Simba version as of this release is 0.9, with 703 as the initial revision of Simba. We chose a version of 0.9 as several important features are still missing, like the script manager. Once these are finished, 1.0 will be released.

This release contains several Simba Extensions. These vary from updaters (for keeping your SRL and Reflection up to date) to dtm editors and firewalls. You will have to activate all the extensions you want to use. (Menu -> View -> Extensions)

Simba 0.9 is fully compatible with the latest SRL; and is marked as stable. (This doesn't mean it actually is stable, but it looks like it actually is stable so far) It works with all Simba scripts; and it is not too hard to turn a SCAR script into a Simba script. Simba also has the ability to update itself upon new updates; so your software will never be outdated!

A huge thanks go out to all those that have tested Simba. Simba would not have been where it is now without you guys…

Yep! Today or tomorrow. There's more to it than simply clicking that radiobutton. Well, if I want to prevent everyone from nagging me about lots of stuff that also has to be changed, etc. ;)

Yeah, but that also requires UAC to be added to Simba; C:\Simba (or just any other place that isn't write protected to anyone but admin) is better on Windows NT 6.x kernels; as the permissions work differently. :)
Obviously UAC will have to be added at some point.

I haven't been to the SRL forums in far too long, but I was told about this project, so I had to come check it out. I'm quite impressed so far, it's great to see an excellent open source, cross-platform project like this.

I am running into a problem compiling this for linux though (specifically, Ubuntu 10.10 Lucid amd64), I had to add quite a bit to the Makefile, but now I am stuck getting many errors compiling RUTIS, did this ever work on linux? I googled to try to find some documentation for it but all of the pages are a language I can't read. If I can get this sorted I'd be more than happy to maintain debian/ubuntu packages for Simba and even a static binary for Linux users. Thanks!

Ever since RUTIS was added a few commits ago; I think the x64 part requires a patch to work. I did not commit this yet because it would only result in compilation of RUTIS, and not in a working RUTIS for x64.

RUTIS works on x86; and pascalscript compiles on all platforms. Linux version of Simba works, the entirely mml (the core macroing lib) works fine on Linux. I developed the Linux right the start. the only thing it lacks is a IsKeyDown function.

The Makefile is not up to date. I suggest using lazarus or lazbuild. I'll probably have to write a bit more about how to build it on Linux. A Makefile is not very viable as one will still need the Lazarus libs to build Simba. (lazbuild serves as a replacement in this case)

I'm at college at the moment; but we should talk a bit, there are definitely some small catches as to compiling Simba and setting up lazarus on Linux.
Not many people have wanted to before, except for the developers. ;)

moparisthebest

2010-09-02 12:05:15

Thanks for the quick reply. I had no problem setting up lazarus, following the instructions to get it from the repo on this page:

http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/Lazarus_release_version_for_Ubuntu

(in short, run these commands:

gpg --keyserver hkp://pgp.mit.edu:11371 --recv-keys 6A11800F
gpg --export 6A11800F | sudo apt-key add -
sudo echo "deb http://www.hu.freepascal.org/lazarus/ lazarus-stable universe" \
> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/lazarus.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install lazarus
)

Here is where I am stuck at on the make, and this is after I've made some changes that I'm not sure will work on RUTIS, my only experience with pascal was scar scripting and I've never done anything with Delphi, so I was just winging it. :)

After this gets sorted I'd love to set up an automated build system on my server to spit out amd64 and x86 linux builds when you guys release some new code. After that happens I also plan to replace all the SCAR boards on my forum with Simba boards. :)

Here is a quick patch to allow compilation of RUTIS: http://wizzup.org/dirlist/patches/simba/0-rutis-x64.patch
It only fixes compilation so actually using RUTIS will result in crashes. RUTIS currently doesn't work on x64 platforms due to a lot assumptions that are only valid on x86. (Pointer size, pointer types)

It is important to realize that RUTIS does not work/compile (without fix) on x64; and PascalScript only half works on x86 Linux and x64 Linux. (One of the main reasons we want to switch Interpreter is because pascalscript only works properly on Windows)

All the other parts in Simba work fine. Colour Picker, Code Editor, the entire MML. (The Simba ``core''.) We're working on writing bindings for it to other languages such as Java, Python, C. We'll have to restructure it a bit since we use Pascal arrays and those can't really be exported as they are managed. I haven't touched it in a bit since Simba currently is quite stable, and changing a lot in the core will probably introduce a few bugs… I could probably do it in a branch… ;)

Git url: git clone git://villavu.com/simba.git
Web view: http://git.villavu.com/

About the releases; cool. That'll be very useful, especially once we have a working interpreter on Linux.

2010-09-02 16:30:47

Thanks, that patch will stop me from trying to hack up RUTIS myself, which certainly wouldn't have worked either. I'll give it another shot tonight.

Bindings in those other languages would be excellent, especially python. Python scripting would be nice too, although I know you are trying to keep SCAR script compatibility. Actually, that gives me an idea. Python scripting engines are already a dime a dozen, so rather than writing your own pascal scripting engine, it would probably be much easier, give more features, and be less buggy, if code was written to convert pascal code to python at runtime. This way scripts could be written in pascal OR python, and if they are pascal it would simply be quickly converted behind-the-scenes when run is pressed and ran as a python script. This winter (starting around november) I'd even have extra time to write something like that if you'd be interested. Sorry for my brainstorming post… :p

I saw that git URL last night but it doesn't work:
~/simba$ git clone git://villavu.com/simba.git
Initialized empty Git repository in /home/mopar/simba/simba/.git/
villavu.com[0: 85.17.90.18]: errno=Connection refused
fatal: unable to connect a socket (Connection refused)
To get the code I have I used the web view and downloaded a tarball, though I'd rather clone the git repo so I could submit patches to you. :)

Also, there are some proof of concept Python bindings, but I stopped working on them until the core changes have been committed. After that is the done, the wrapper shouldn't be too hard.

Great, the git server works now. Any comments on my ramblings about python scripting and a pascal->python converter? :) Or what are your current plans regarding a script engine?

It sounds like an interesting idea, but I have not yet checked out how we would embed the Python interpreter. Let alone checking if Python has a feature to pause the script, etc. If we can embed the Python interpreter, we can probably write a convertor, although that won't be easy!

The current plan is to support PascalScript on Windows and try to patch up/improve on RUTIS a bit so we can eventually use it to replace PascalScript. Unless PascalScript suddenly gets some patches which make it work properly on Linux x86 and x64 (This won't be easy, pascalscript is quite messy in some parts), then we could probably focus our energy on other parts of Simba. (Such as the core changes for bindings)

I'm still having problems compiling, OpenURL and OpenDocument weren't found (apparently only in lazarus 0.9.29+, I'm using 0.9.28.2), so I made empty stubs for those, got past that but I'm stuck on this:

framescript.pas(598,66) Error: Identifier not found "cfbtSlashComment"
framescript.pas(598,81) Error: Identifier not found "cfbtBorCommand"
framescript.pas(598,97) Error: Identifier not found "cfbtAnsiComment"
framescript.pas(598,98) Error: Illegal expression
framescript.pas(624,73) Error: Illegal qualifier
framescript.pas(653) Fatal: There were 5 errors compiling module, stopping
Fatal: Compilation aborted

and I cant seem to find anything at all on the internet about this. Any ideas?

OK, my suggestion would be to download the lazarus source/snapshot. The unit framescript is the unit that handles code completion, code parsing, etc. We tend to follow Lazarus' development when it comes to this, so we can quickly add new features to Simba as well. (Last addition was comment folding, a few days ago)

Lazarus subversion repos: svn co http://svn.freepascal.org/svn/lazarus/trunk lazarus
Then just make all and start Lazarus from that path. (Or run sudo make install if you wish to install it to the system)
If you're missing a lib, install the development version of it. AFAIK I had this with only one lib.

I see you have FPC 2.4.0 so that shouldn't be an issue; it is very recent.

I probably don't need to tell you but if you do sudo make install it is probably a good idea to remove the other lazarus install first. :p

Good to see an open-source alternative to SCAR.
Freddy should have open-sourced SCAR a long time ago, but this solves the problem. :)

Always glad to help, although I think Simba could use a lot of work still.

You mean Kaitnieks should have? Don't be so sure, a lot components that cost money today can't be implemented in open source software.

People back then where not big on open-source for numerous reasons. The cheating communities where not as "friendly" as they are now.

So apart from the form editor I don't think other components cost any money, which means those parts could have just been open sourced. Please don't assume that Freddy/Kaitnieks simply cannot open source SCAR because it relies on a few closed components, because that is simply a lie. All the other stuff could have simply been opened.

I'm sure there are things besides the form editor (although this is a huge part of SCAR already) if not in divi then in luna or 4, far from the point is certainly not a lie. Freddy has his reasons for concealing the source, the main one probably being kaitnieks, which confuses me why people so carelessly accuse of him of withholding it.

Nah, Freddy chooses to keep his source closed. (Talking about =>3.5)
Seeing the SCAR he is rewriting from scratch has nothing from Kaitnieks in it, I don't see why he could not opensource parts.

The same goes for example for CTS 3 on the current SCAR. Even the formula is closed. Why? One can't do any calculation with it, calculate the best colour on average given a set of colours, etc. It's closed nature only holding back the adoption of it.

He just doesn't want to. He has stated this over and over again. Here on SRL and on Mopar and most likely on his own forum as well.

Also, the form part isn't really such a large part of SCAR. Not function-wise anyway.

I know I just threw up some points but I don't really want to continue the discussion on this thread. This thread is for celebration, not for discussion the closed nature of SCAR. :)

Looks like it took a lot of work.

I'm sorry if this question sounds really stupid, but I haven't been active for a while now. Why did you guys decide to develop another compiler? Is it because of the portability issues with SCAR (mac/linux)?

Like I said I'm really oblivious about any recent events, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Thats the thing, Freddy wants to stay closed, which only enables him to fix bugs. With Simba's approach, the community can fix bugs.

Yea. Open source ftw :)

About a month after someone gets on the Simba-Dev list gets a Mac.

There's no point in making a mac version _atm_ since the Linux version doesn't work with Pascalscript. There's 0% chance that the Mac version will work with Pascalscript. (I'm really starting to hate pascalscript)

moparisthebest

2011-01-09 05:21:14

But on the plus side, as soon as simba supports python scripting, it will automatically work on Linux and I'm sure I can pull off compiling a Mac version then as well.

As I'm a new user of this :)
I ought to have seen you once at the UvA at infomatics ;).
Maybye I'm mistaken but yeh.
Thanks for this great release I'm trying this to get to work.
My history of botting lays back in the old days when powerbot just was there.
I discovered kbot after that due to jagex it had to close :(.
Then I bought some scripts of rsbotting which I really wanted.
Found out about RSBuddy but got the bad news today..
So I decided to be active on this forum :)

If you can't download it from the official site, you could try the MITB fork:
