Simba Debugging

This is mainly for developers, scripters and others who simply can't figure out why Simba crashes. Debug builds of Simba will provide additional output in the cmd.exe / terminal, save these to a file. These debug builds are about five times the size of the normal Simba.

You can download Simba Debug buils from here: http://simba.villavu.com/bin/Windows/x86/Debug/

Alternatively you can make Simba's auto updater fetch new debug versions, that setup is similar to here: http://villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58189 but instead of Stable or Unstable you put Debug. If the procedure is not clear then please let me know. It's possible one of the settings in the thread does not yet exist, you can safely add them.

You'll have to run Simba from cmd.exe to actually make use of these debug symbols. Hopefully this will help debugging some issues.

Use like this on Windows:

From: Coh3n
Hit the Windows Key + R. The Run windows should appear.
Type in cmd, hit enter.
The command prompt should come up.
Type in cd "Simba.exe path here" (for me, it's cd c:/simba) and hit enter.
Type in simba.exe and hit enter.
Simba should now pop up and you'll see all the debug stuff in the command prompt.

For example, an exception thrown (manually added, just to demonstrate):
Example output below is on Linux. (Doesn't really matter, just don't type ./Simba on Windows)

$ ./Simba

As you can see, the first paste provides useful information whereas the second one does not. I've set up a source for the auto updater to use the debug build.

So just a simple replacement of Simba.exe with your debug version and run it through the windows command screen? I'll give it a go and run my LandScorcher script, it uses both Smart and Reflection and apparently it'll crash within minutes. I'll have a report to give you at this time, and I'm kinda anxious to see what the problem is myself.

Wizzup?

2011-03-12 08:05:39

If you want to save all the output to a file, do this (on Windows):

Simba.exe > log.txt 2>log2.txt

And then log.txt and log2.txt contain all the prints from Simba.

It actually didn't crash Smart/Simba this time, but just stopped the script. By the way, here's line 83, this line is from the 'PaintOnSmart' procedure.
DrawBitmap(Pic, Canvas, Placement.x, Placement.y);
Would would this be out of memory? Line 83 creates the bitmap and immediately following it on line 84 is 'FreeBitmap(Pic);'.

It's odd though, usually both Smart and Simba will crash for me.

Wizzup?

That looks like Reflection issues.

E: Although the DrawBitmap is interesting too.

Could that be an incorrect hook? The only hooks I found that shared the name d were these:

hook_static_ValidInterfaces
hook_AnimableNode_GetAnimable
hook_node_Next
hook_secondlevelobject_GetID

So it kinda looks like one of the reflections functions in your script are trying to reference a field that doesn't exist in the client.

Here's the only reflection I use in my LandScorcher script(which is what I used for testing).

procedure Chop;
var
TP: TPoint;
X,Y: integer;
Tree: TRSObject;
begin
if (Clicked = False) then
begin
Wait(350+random(150));
Tree := GetObjectByIDEx([1278,1276],OBJECT_TYPE_INTERACTABLE,20);
if not TileOnMS(Tree.RealTile, 0) then
begin
TP := TileToMM(Tree.RealTile);
Mouse(TP.x,TP.y,4,4, True);
case RandomRange(0,1) of
0:
RotateToObj('East',RandomRange(1,3));
1:
RotateToObj('West',RandomRange(1,3));
end;
FFlag(RandomRange(1, 3)); //Mm flag? Not sure
end else begin
TP := TileToMS(Tree.RealTile, 0);
{Because of trees facing random directions,
the tile X/Y will change often, so we use
reflection to find the tile, and color to
find the object interaction options within
a 100x100 radius of the tree's tile.
}
if(FindObjEx(X,Y,['Chop','down'],[3564376,3828833,2771522],25,50,TP.x-50,TP.y-50,TP.x+50,TP.y+50)) then
begin
MMouse(X,Y,2,2);
Wait(RandomRange(50,75));
if(IsUpText('Tree')) then
begin
Mouse(X,Y,2,2,True);
GetObjPosition(Point(X,Y)); //Yay, ACR! We are now officially human...ish

So try what he says in the first post so we can figure out why it's crashing?

And thanks Wizz. Simba doesn't crash often for me, but I'll be sure to use this from now on to catch when it does. One question, will this version still be updated with the automatic updater?

It will update to a newer debug version if you have changed the URL's in the settings. If you have not changed them, it will also update (eventually) but then it will go back to Stable (or Unstable, whatever you link points to).

The names that you are putting in the cmd terminal input are where its being saved.

I'm interested as well. I tried googleing, but couldn't get it to work. I also tried what you said in your second post, Wizzup, and both the files were made, but the first one had no text and the second had "Invalid command..".

Wouldn't it be something like "Simba.exe debuginfo.txt"? Or something close…

Wizzup?

2011-03-13 05:50:55

./Simba.exe > log.txt 2>log2.txt

This should work? Perhaps try without the ./

The files will be located in the Simba folder.

bolshak25

yes. it works without the ./
im rerunning now with that and we will see what pops up

Has anyone tried running MSI with the debug version? I keep getting "Include_Once file already included" for every file. It then doesn't compile because of "Unknown identifier 'MarkTime'.

I think it has something to do with the player remote extension. In the debug version of Simba, it doesn't compile. I get "Extension Disabled - Did not compile", followed by the unused variable hint for every file in MSI's globals.simba (included in the remote extension). In the command line, it says "Init procedure didn't execute right, or couldn't be found." Everything works fine without the debug version, though.

E: Maybe it doesn't have anything to do with the player remote. I still get the same "Include_Once…" and "Unknown identifer…" when the extension is disabled.

E2: When I change every {$include_once} to just {$i }, it works fine.

E3: The remote still doesn't compile with the debug version for whatever reason.

E4: This may be helpful. Was what showed when I tried closing Simba with SMART still open (the "simba not responding" that came up earlier).

But it works fine with 0.96. I didn't have any issues until I switched to the debug version in the first post. The only thing I changed to make it work was switch all "include_once" to "i".

Not to mention the player remote works as well in 0.96 and not in the debug version. And "Init procedure didn't execute right" isn't that helpful. So I'm not sure what different between the two Simba versions, but I don't see how it's a problem with MSI. :confused:

It should probably print why it didn't compile / execute properly. The Simba debug version is also the latest Simba version, not 0.96 Simba

Well in the Simba debug box, it says "Extension disabled - did not compile", and in the command line it says "Init procedure blah blah."

Ok So I was reading what I understood and apparently it looks like there is a problem with find best hatchet. Then it it solved. Probably nothing to do with the close program error in which it just freezes.

By the looks of things, it doesn't even say why it froze. It just stopped. :confused: I'm not sure why people are having this issue, though. I just left for a day and a half and Simba's been running on 4 characters the whole time (still running in fact). I haven't had Simba freeze during runtime in weeks (since the memory leak was fixed).

For me, it depends on which script i use, it never froze when using normal scripts, but when i use MSI its like instant freeze. Mostly of the time already in the form and if it doesnt freeze there it freezes when the script is running and i click simba to the foreground.

Any chance you could check how much memory MSI uses compared to a script that works?

Does anyone know if there's somewhere that "limits" memory usage for certain programs? Maybe there's a smaller limit on some people's computers, which may cause this problem.

I still think it's either related to the MSI form, or just to Simba. It's somehow blocking communication with the host OS which means windows will shut it down.

If that's the case I would think it would happen with more people. I wish it happened for me, then I could actually give you a proper debug report. =\

Let me try without using the form. What do I have to enter /change so that I dont use the MSI Form? I know theres a form boolean … what else?

It's all in the guide for setting up MSI http://villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57723.

@Wizzup, here's a couple reports from crashes. One was just a code:8 I got after a 52 hour run, but I left the other one running while I went to practice and I came home and Simba/SMART was closed.

Then that was it, it didn't go back to the new command line thing like it usually does when you close a program (in my case "c:\Simba"). Hopefully these help a little. :)

I'm having problems using the MSI VE mining script. When I setup MSI to specifically ignore iron (using the GUI MSI setup) on my characters, any time I click on simba, it has a "Access violation." I'll post a screenshot of the popup box here:

I think this is what it output using the debug version when the dialogue box popped up and it had the access violation:

I've tried using the command prompt, I've tried using administrator priviledges, but nothing seems to work. I've used the ratinator before successfully, so i'm not sure why this script, in particular, would be giving me this error.

what's even more bizarre is that when I completely ignore tab 5 in the MSI setup gui (and have MSI figure it out on its own which scripts to run), this "access violation" is completely fixed, but then another problem is caused. The script executes the first character fine, but then proceeds to log the second player in, look at his bank, close the bank, then sit there until he's set to false, and so on, with every other character. I may post a dump of this later to help the msi devs cus i'm not really sure what's going on there.

I may just try the manual script setup instead of using the fancy gui. Maybe that'll help my problem.

These look like the common problems between the two. I'm using vista 32 bit, if that helps the troubleshooting at all:

Yeah, you should make a thread in the MSI bugs section and post what the debug says so we can figure it out. That is bizarre, though. I NEVER use the last tab, and it's always worked for me.

As for you Access Violation, try without the form. It seems that for some people, the form is causing issues. I guess it's a good things we're completely rewriting it. :)

Here's the image… I forgot to upload it:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I'm running it again now. It appears that MSI is looking in the bank for a pickaxe, when in reality the character is already wielding the pickaxe. It seems to be forgetting to check the equipment tab for every character except the first one.

Once it's done running I'll post the debug for you in the MSI section.

You know, now that I think about it, the form needs to access a bunch of bitmaps from your MSI folder. Have you checked the permissions for your MSI folder? Also, thanks for making a new thread for your pickaxe issue.

Yago

2011-03-19 12:20:49

Ill check the bitmaps in a min. I do have avg antivirus though and i think it makes all folders read only or something to prevent antivirus cause once i had an issue with that on another program.

Ill chekc it in a few hours.

All the images show in the form though but ill check it.

Oh sorry, I thought you got the access violation before the form came up.

Ill check the bitmaps in a min. I do have avg antivirus though and i think it makes all folders read only or something to prevent antivirus cause once i had an issue with that on another program.

Ill chekc it in a few hours.

I have AVG as well… maybe that's our common issue?

Shouldn't be. I had AVG for the longest time and never had issues.

Ill disable for 15 mins to try the form… Return to you in a few.

Edit:

This is with AVG disabled:

This only occurs on Windows 7? Just wondering. I don't have time to investigate right now; but what I'd really like to see if to eliminate as much possibilities as possible. Like I said, does it only happen on Windows 7, does it only happen with a specific script, does it only happen with SMART/Reflection; etc.

Of all the issues MSI and others have had I think the ``Has stopped working'' error may be one in Simba. The code:8 and others were due to memory leaks or other problems in scripts. (Correct me if I am wrong)

Also, thanks for the debug traces. Not all are helpful but they sure help a bit.

I have Vista.

1. To me this only happens with MSI.
2. Only happens when I use the MSI Form.
3. Using the declareplayers works perfectly with MSI.
4. Ive tried disabling AVG anti-virus (on a suggestion) and nothing

I would say it's safe to say that the form is the problem then. Another repetitive question, but does it happen right after you click "Run" on the form? If so, when you click run, it tries to save the players by writing the info to a file, and if you don't have permission you'd get an access violation.

Could you do me a favour then and try using the "Save Players" button and see if you get the same thing?

Ok I did what you said above with the form enabled and here is a picture of what I got. I couldn't copy the command prompt but you can see it in the image. I blacked out my character's name.

Edit:

Here's another one. This was after I stopped and terminate MSI. The script worked well in formless mode.
When I closed SMART I got this.

No… I have Vista 32bit.

I've also tried to make the entire Simba folder non-read-only, but each time, something resets some of the items to read-only. Maybe AVG? Not sure.

Yago, I honestly have no idea how that would have anything to do with MSI's form. I'll try to look into it, though.

No, I haven't tried without the form yet, but I get no errors as long as I don't modify tab 5 on the form, so I think I will keep using the form; I just have to remember to run it without changing the options on tab 5.

yes. i could try disabling it to see if that fixes the issue.

Harry

Yes, try disabling it. UAC is a pain in the butt. If it works with it disabled, you could keep it disabled I guess, or upgrade to Windows 7 (whos UAC isn't as painful as Vista's, and actually works properly).

Well I have some new information. I had Smart on me after roughly 9 hours, and it happened exactly when reflection automatically updated from 311 to 312 during run time.

Here's what caught in the debug window as it happened:

Again, this script is not MSI, it's a simple reflection auto fisher.

How often do progress reports get printed? Make it write one every few minutes and see if it happens again? Don't know why a reflection update would stop SMART/Simba (works fine for me, and it doesn't automatically "apply" it, due to scripts compiling all the include into memory and ignoring any file changes to the include, so I doubt that would be the issue…).

Flight

2011-03-20 21:00:56

Would progress reports really chew up space though? And why would it run fine for 9 hours and just now run out of memory when reflection was being updated? Just trying to put 2 and 2 together.

Wizzup?

2011-03-21 14:23:22

It looks like an error with Java, but since SMART uses the JNI (Java Native Interface), it is possible it's somehow corrupting Java thus causing it to crash this way.

I got one. A code 8.

Here is what I was able to get. I wasn't running MSI just a normal script then I tried to open another script and in the open thing the explorer wouldn't go to the parent directory then i close the open file window and got this:

Coh3n

2011-04-03 01:53:21

Was it a reflection or a color script? And how long was it running?

Yago

2011-04-03 14:59:11

I wasn't running a script (80% sure i wasn't) … I had to other scripts open in tabs of simba and I had the object page of function open as you can see (Script name will be objects)… I was on the third tab (Obejcts.scar or .simba) then I pressed the open icon and it sort of froze. Then I pressed it like two more times and it failed me.

if I was running a script then it would have been Cstrik's FindObjNear.

Here's a pic with a bit more debug I was able to get out of the crash:

But I don't believe I was because that scripts runs pretty quick. Like 3 seconds… THe script should have been successfully executed…

Coh3n

2011-04-04 00:26:48

It's interesting that a script wasn't running… I'm not sure honestly, and I don't know what those errors mean. Will have to wait for Wizzup? or someone who does.

Wizzup?

2011-04-04 10:06:21

It just means there's no more memory to allocate, and then Simba dies. It can literally happen anywhere.

Coh3n

2011-04-04 15:08:08

So there's really no way to fix it? Or figure out where it originates from.

Gu3st...

2011-04-04 15:23:02

If it is caused by a memory leak (most likely) then there's ways to fix it. The problem is figuring out how / what's causing it :/

I could never get that working. I'd always get a runtime error a couple seconds into the run. I thought I had told you that, but maybe not.

Yago

2011-04-06 22:30:25

Got another one. Here's the order of what happened:

1. Clicked red X on the top right while the script was running.
2. Pop-up that said would you like to stop the script.
3. I pressed yes.
4. While it was stopping(the red x circle on top of the stop button), I pressed the red X on the top right of the screen and got this:

Bam!!! Crash

Wizzup?

2011-04-07 04:02:21

Ah, that sounds like a proper bug!

Yago

2011-04-07 16:21:39

Yeah I pressed the red X at the top right while the script was stopping itself/calling the procedures it does on termination. As in there was also a red X in a circle on top of the end script button next to the run arrow and pause button.

Another, Also, say smart is set world 0 … if you end the script and rerun it … sometimes it crashes, asks to risk data corruption, or closes smart. I think obviously it shouldn't crash but the times it doesn't then it should reload smart.
