There used to be a time that bots where rare; nowadays there are more bots then ever. Up to the point that there are many many more bots on f2p than legits. Everywhere you look there are flocks of low and highlevel bots walking the same path.
I personally find crowds of bots repulsive and frankly silly. I would never join in a script once I see there are others using the same script.
I wonder what SRL thinks about this.

there used to be a script that reported every level three(or what ever you specified in a range of levels) in your area for botting, switched worlds, and did it again. why not make an other? :)
what could be even funner is creating some sort of secure server that SRL puts their bot user names in, the script checks to see if any of them are in the list and skips(unless it's a level three thats not auto fighting) over

Kind of like the "flash mob" mentality, eh?
I guess if 50 people all suddenly show up at a gas station and rob the place, they will almost all get away with it, but one or two might be physically caught or identified on surveillance video.
That doesn't really apply in this case, since Jagex can identify and ban pretty much every one of these bots if they put their mind to it. It seems as though they don't want to bother anymore. So maybe it doesn't even matter how obvious you are.
SRL has always been about keeping a low profile, and I still agree with that approach. The reality is that there are many ways Jagex could identify us today, but they don't.

The majority of the bots are the level 3's in free worlds. I agree 100% with Iamadam, scripting for me is worth it just for the challenge of working with Simba and SRL, I really enjoy it whether or not it's beneficial to me in Runescape. I also want to second his proposal of an SRL bot-busting army with and updated version of the Botcatcher script. The old version of this seemed to check for player colors? This wouldn't work now, but I think the original idea of lvl 3's in prime 'bot spots' is the main priority here.

A favorite recent pastime of mine has been to get on a crowded memb's server, go to Aubury's rune shop, and build a cannon in front of the door. It's always fun to see the mass logout that happens once the bots realize that they can't get into the shop.
Just for fun, I might make a script that goes to highly botted areas and closes key doors, or something of the like; some sort of counter-bot. I also like the idea of the auto-report script seen here:
http://villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8956But yeah, I remember back when Phats were more common than bots :( It wouldn't offend me nearly as much if not for the fact that 99.8% of the botters today know absolutely nothing about scripting.

2011-03-04 15:00:25
I too agree that it is really sad with all the botters. OK, I have no problem with botting, I have a real problem with leechers.
My belief and how I bot is that, if you don't know how to write a script, you are not allowed to bot. Unless you fully understand what is going on, you don't deserve ability to bot.
That is why all the scripts (botting) I do, is only my own scripts. I really, really rarely do other people scripts.
And that bot catcher would be nice, if it was brought back :)

I think this is a problem with Powerbot users in general, because they make up the majority of the f2p botting population.
As for a bot combating script, I think it is a very good idea. I bet it would be more productive than any of the current player mods on RS. It would be funny if someone actually got player mod from using a script like that :p

I believe removing the g.e will encourage more merchanting, interaction with other players, and a challenge. I mean I memorized all the spots where people sold different items in world 1 and 2. It's not that bad really, actually more fun.
Right now we just bot goods, go to the grand exchange and dump. Removing the G.e will stop prices from getting incredibly low. Personally, I don't agree with the bot catcher. It'd be more likely an annoyance to the Jagex employees who monitor the system than it does help them. After all, Jagex are ultimately our friends.
If they wanted to ban every level three player in one area, they could do that with the flick of a switch (or click of a mouse button, just grab all the players in one area from the server and ban). The bot catcher would just add a significant amount of more reports ( with some level 3's being legitimate payer) than the actual helpful ones, observed by real humans, submitted by a legitimate player.

Jagex is too lazy to do anything like that. Even if the updaters has to be completely rewritten, the bot problem would only be solved for a few weeks at the max. And that's only for bots that rely upon client hooks, everything that relies on color or shapes would still be up and running.

Yesterday I went to arma gwd and there's even hoards of them at aviancies! I don't see why Jagex can't hire a couple more Mods that specifically just go through the worlds to various high traffic botting areas and just manually perm ban them.
Oh wait, because each bot means +$5, and if there's 10 bots alone at aviancies in one world, that's $50 a month, but then you multiply that by over 140 worlds, that's over $7,000 each month alone JUST from aviancies.

Reflection is just as detectable as injection - just saying :P
How so?
Zyt3x:
Reflection is just examining the client at run time without editing it, however, this is slower and more detectable than injection. Injection is modifying the client before loading it to be able to easily view the information inside of it, this means that the bot can read directly from the client, this gives the speed advantage over reflection. For detectability, injection can be used to remove/disable any client sided bot detection systems whereas reflection cannot.
Versus
There are two main kinds of bots: BCEL (Byte Code Engineering Library) and Reflection.
BCEL bots use an injector to hack the RS client. Once it writes its code into the client it is then able to extract lots of vital data about where it is in the game and what's going on around it. It uses that data to do the mining, woodcutting, fishing, etc., and to do it in a more human-like fashion.
Of course, you've just injected code! You've left a trail of botting evidence that leads directly to your account. Or have you?
Yes and no. The absolute best bots can use such elaborate algorithms that they are nearly undetectable to the kinds of detection systems that our good friends at Jagex have in place. There are millions of Runescape players online globally every minute of every day. There's no way they can monitor all of them closely at the level required to detect every bot. For the most part, they are waiting for reports from other players that there is a suspicious player. That's why you need to take a little time and search for bots that may be less well known, but that are also not as easily detected.
This leads us to Reflection bots. They simply read the data from the client as best they can, and use it to perform their tasks as best they can. They aren't as effective as the BCEL/injection bots, but they are essentially undetectable. Even if our good friends at Jagex suspect you are using one, there is no way for them to prove it because nothing was injected or otherwise altered within the client. Whew!

There are two main kinds of bots: BCEL (Byte Code Engineering Library) and Reflection.

Yes, I've read that before, but he said reflection is just as detectable as injection and I haven't read that is the case anywhere on the internet, so that's why I asked him to prove his statement :)

This thread is full of hypocrisy.
Don't think we're better because we don't use the same method - in the end, SRL is just another bot.
I don't think we're criticizing them for botting, but the motives behind why they're botting and the part where there's hoards of them obviously botting and Jagex , for whatever reason, decides to not just permanently ban all of them. Not like they're hard to spot either.
