SRL Members? Not as hard as it used to be.

I think SRL Members need to think and look over scripts better before voting for someone to get into SRL Members. Plus scripts aren't the only thing, you have to look at their activity/post count/watever. I just saw an SRL member that is probably a new comer who joined a couple of weeks ago and has only 50 posts, but someone submitted a script and got into SRL.

There needs to be more competition to get into members, back then people were getting in with 20 to 21 votes for yes, now its like 21 yes and 1 no -.-. Is it just me or what? :cartman:

P.S posted here so that juniors can say their thoughts as well :P.

I think the reason for that person to get in is because of the fact that we had sooo many failed apps recently, so we let this guy in.

SRL isn't what it use to be. If we rejected people like that, then we would fall apart. We need more advanced scripters, as we don't have many these days, and the ones we do aren't very active.

Just take a month and make a really good script, incorporate everything you know into it. Ive seen some of the things that you've done, you could make it if you tried tbh.

No, i was talking about in the past. I realize i haven't been here that long, but i have had some…incite…into the past. A lot more members were active back then, and the developer team (no offense to the current one) was a lot more active then now. These days Jagex seems to always be one step ahead of us, but way back when, we bettered jagex at every corner.

I dunno, I got in over a year and a half ago and my script was pretty terrible (though maybe it was just because Wizzup liked it). I think since then it got harder to get in and then easier again. Past members there's still things like cups and the dev rank, so it's not like members is supposed to be the best of the best scripters. It's suposed to differentiate between good scripters and for the most part leechers, and I think it does a good job of that.

I'm considering writing an ectofunctus script for membership :D Even though I've been around for a month and my first script isn't even released yet.

Doesn't that tells you that something is wrong? That while SRL is easy to learn (so far), SCAR/SRL allow only imperfect scripts?

I won't get into a debate I know nothing of, but I'm thinking that what we need is not more members but more devs. And a working reflection maybe.

I'm assuming it's because some of the junior members are having a hard time getting members even though they've been trying really hard and doing their best.

I guess my advice would be put your script somewhere in the jr members' script section and hope people test it enough so that you can get decent sized progress reports, which always look good :)

That's one of the main problems I see. People are let in before they are really "known" at all. SRL Member's should be a trusted group. Not saying that current members are doing anything wrong. Though, in the recent past I can think of a few that should have been held back…

To me, SRL Members are the "true" members, or at least should be. The ones that actually care about the community. That's how I like to think of it anyways…

Also, SRL is dying, pretty much we're trying to take anyone/thing we can to keep any sort of activity alive. lets be serious, when I joined there was 1k+ new posts a day, so many you couldn't sort through all of them, when now I come home from school and there is ~50 new posts.

Amen.

Srl/Scar is now well behind of Rsbot and Nexus. I guess its due to the fact Scar is closed source so no other room for improvement while Rsbot and Nexus(not sure) have alot of developers and a lot of scripters.

New comers just find Rsbot and Nexus easier to use with larger communities. While its like the opposite here. But I have to say our community is much much much more mature and safer.

Everyone is saying that it's getting really easy to get members, but it's really not : /. If anything, the standards have gotten much higher. I applied with the shittiest script ever, and I got in. Proof of this is I applied with my terrible script a whle back, then just a couple months ago, someone stole my script and applied, and even before I got to go copybust it, people had voted no because it wasn't good enough. I think that we need to stop complaining that the standards are low. As SRL members, of course we are going to be better scripters than 95% of the people that apply. They don't need ot be perfect to get in. I think the standards are fine.

Read the first post lol. If you want to make a decent script, you are going to have to learn, which would take time. So while you are learning, take part in forum posts and let people know you are there. And make some SRL member friends so they vote yes :p

And ultra- Good point. Since SRL members have so much power, I think they must be trusted and not just allowed based on just good scripts. Activity, attitude etc should also be important…

I still remember when we had 10+ Applications per day.. Now we have like 1 per month.
I guess it's a good thing, JaGeX isn't as much focused on us anymore, but I still would love more activity…

I remember iSpy spit out 4 new posts per second and I had to click on pause to be able to click on any interesting looking topic, but now…

What was the reason for this? My guess is RSBot being so leecher-friendly, so anybody who couldn't get a script to work just started using RSBot instead..

Dub

2009-12-19 05:14:06

In here, there's the sort of encouragement to learning that most people don't want. Leechers and people who don't want to learn or don't have the time, simply go to easy to leech bots like the ones mentioned before. The few people that do remain, are willing to learn, contributive and usually smart and nice people. I prefer this, family-like community to the one there used to be on Fagex when I was still a mod. People were OMG LIEK I NEEDZ TEH SCRIPTZ GIEF AND FINISHZ. Now it's "Hey, need some help?". I like it here :D

The Claw

I think activity is decreasing because we are falling behind in terms of usability and reliability. The program we use can hardly open a script without throwing an error, and reflection has been down for ages because we have nearly no people active here who know how/can be bothered to fix. The scripts and scripting ability here are as good as ever, some would say better than ever, but because updates which break us take forever to fix due to the closed-source of our key tools people lose interest quick - recent examples being runetek 5 breaking reflection and the uptext update. Especially when they can just go over to another leecher-friendly java community with almost instant updates and be up and autoing on their main in minutes.

When everything works the scripts here are as good as if not better than scripts at java communities (especially when we have reflection working, we can do almost everything they can) but because it takes months for us to update, where it takes them hours or days, theres next to no incentive to participate here other than for the challenge and fun. Which immediately cuts out alot of the runescape autoing community

If you want to increase activity, stop complaining about it. Make a script, run other peoples scripts, create a reason to script. Rather than ask what others could do, think what you could do.

Back on topic, ultimately SRL Members isn't special, nor should it be. It means near nothing and gives you access to only a bit more. Really being too easy or too hard to get into SRL Members shouldn't affect anything since this is a community based around scripting and very few resources for learning scripting aren't available to the common registered user.

Heavenguard

2009-12-19 19:21:28

I Disagree with Mixter -sorry, I <3 u :D-

I believe that being an SRL Member is a huge step in the Ranking process. Those who commit themselves and strive to learn anything about this deserves this Rank. It is a sign of On-going Dedication and Progress to those around you. I would only apply for SRL Membership after I learn as much as I can first, then make a very beautiful script (with as much effort, neatness, understanding) in it, as well as keeping a healthy friendship between all of my Family Members ( like u :D ).

Right now Im currently learning TPA Walking, I have plenty of people constantly helping me, such as Naum, Coh3n, Icefire… They all continue to help me understand these things, there the ones who make it easier for me. After I learn how to efficiently use TPA Walking(feel like im getting real close to it), ill start making scripts using TPA's and all sorts of things in them, just for fun, that will continue to reinforce the knowledge I was given.

After making a beautiful script, I plan on learning how to make/use Reflection, which I have no clue on what that is, I just want to learn it so I can help my family out :D, as you (SRL Members and Above) have helped me out.

The list goes on and on, I just want to strive for the best. Learning as much as I can. After I feel I have the Knowledge just like an SRL Member, ill feel comfortable to apply for SRL Membership :D

SRL Member's signify the strength of the Family. It has an Incredible Standing. While expressing your commitment and understand of Scripting, it Motivates you to overcome anything.

And for Learning: I believe the basics are taught Beautifully. After the basics, intermediates are very fun to learn, then Advanced tie everything together, and everything is available to learn >.>, Its amazing at the time and effort that a lot of our SRL Members and High ranks commit to teaching. It truly is amazing. Not only does learning teach me how to script, it motivates me to keep on going!

mixster

2009-12-19 20:31:06

That may be your view, but it's wrong. Every single person has a different view on what SRL Members is - there is no one, right view, but the mesh of views that everyone who votes on a specific application. To some, SRL Members is an elitist group of the best scripters. To others, it's a sign of maturity - that you aren't just a run of the mill scripter, but one with manners, dignity and respectability. To others, it's a nudge in the right direction for eventual dev-ship as everyone should attain to that. To some, it's merely a level of accepting that someone has at least a decent level of maturity, some skill and at least some what contributes. As so many different people are involved, it often boils down to the last. Some people may get into Members because they are amazing scripters, but it's also just as likely some really helpful, but not too good scripters will get it, so ultimately SRL Members holds no value in pre-judging someone or assuming anything of anyone other than they have been here for long enough to qualify to be an average person at the least.

1. lol

It's original definition was "Laughing out loud" (also written occasionally as "Lots of Laughs"), used as a brief acronym to denote great amusement in chat conversations.

Now, it is overused to the point where nobody laughs out loud when they say it. In fact, they probably don't even give a shit about what you just wrote. More accurately, the acronym "lol" should be redefined as "Lack of laughter."

Depending on the chatter, its definition may vary. The list of its meanings includes, but is not limited to:
1) "I have nothing worthwhile to contribute to this conversation."
2) "I'm too lazy to read what you just wrote so I'm typing something useless in hopes that you'll think I'm still paying attention."
3) "Your statement lacks even the vaguest trace of humor but I'll pretend I'm amused."
4) "This is a pointless acronym I'm sticking in my sentence just because it's become so engraved into my mind that when chatting, I MUST use the meaningless sentence-filler 'lol.'"

What we care about is that you are going to contribute to the community. i dont care how good of a scripter you are, 50 posts does not show that you are going to USE those skills to help out.
