SRL Scripting Competition Results!
Competition 3: A SCAR Game!

Hey hey!

Due to unforeseen circumstances, I wasn't able to finish marking these scripts when I first started them, but good news! They are finally finished. The winner is about to be revealed…

In the following posts, I will be posting my comments on each persons script; what I liked about them all and what I think could have been improved. The scripts on which i comment on will be attached as i believe a lot of people can learn off of all of the scripts. However, if you want your script removed, please tell me and i will do so.

Table of Contents:
The Scripts

The Winner and a Final Note

Introduction Page

What A collection of games these have turned out to be. Most of them are extremely addictive, and the competition was very close. Congratz to everyone who entered on creating such great games.

The aim of this competition was to get more people using canvases, the FastDraw functions and types in SCAR, as not many people realize just how useful these can be whilst scripting. Lots of people stepped up to this challenge, and the results were great.

Remember: What I say about your scripts are solely my own opinions. All criticism is only meant to be constructive and help you improve your scripts. I'm sorry if any criticism comes out negative, it is not meant like that. Feel free to take none of my advice, I'm not exactly the best SCAR scripter around. I would like to take the opportunity to say now that all of the scripts are of a great quality, and i congratulate you all in making these in such a short time period. Well done.

So here we go. A lot of people can learn a lot from the following, so pay attention! The games are about to begin ;)

Thanks,

What I have Marked you on

All of the scripts have been marked using the same extensive criteria. I tried to keep it as fair as possible whilst marking the scripts. Below, I will quickly summarize what I was marking you all on, and what I expected from each

1. Technique (/100)

This relates to what type of loops you have used where, how you decided to load all of those variables, if you used types correctly etc.

2. Individuality (/100)

This refers to whether your scripting style is your own or not. The more individual your script is, the better it is for you, because this means you really understand what all of the different procedures / functions / types / methods should be used for. it means you are relying less on other people, and are developing your own style.

3. Creativity (/100)

How creative was the script, how different was it to everyone else's, was it what I was expecting the mass to do, or did yours stand out of the crowd?

4. Content (/100)

What was in your game, did it have high scores? Did it have sounds? how interactive was it etc.

5. Efficiency (/100)

This is the thing I am most strict about. The more efficient the script is, the better it is. Why constantly write out procedures when you can use a simple repeat instead? Are you using "end else" when needed? Do you have duplicate functions? Are you freeing DTMs / bitmaps after finishing with them? The more efficient your script is, the better it will run, and the easier errors will be to fix when the arise.

6. Presentation (/100)

Presentation of a script is always important! And this should be easy marks. There are only 4 categories. Do you have a respectable title page? A decent progress report? Good scripting standards? Commented procedures and functions? (which is the one everyone always forgets!)

7. Added Extras (/100)

What extra features did you include in your script? The more that are in there, the better it is. Be careful though, because including extra features which don't work / aren't efficient could get you marked down in other categories!

8. Addictiveness (/100)

Simple put, how long was I playing the game for, did it hold my attention or is a little more something needed to make it better?

Coin Flip - Unknown!

1. Technique (75/100)

Good technique throughout the script. However, it would be much better to load all of the bitmaps once and then keep them loaded throughout the entire run of the script.
The form could have been parsed with Rons DFM parser, but thats not a huge issue.
Many of the form vars could have been made into local variables instead of keeping them global.

2. Individuality (10/100)

A good script, but quite basic. A lot of scripters could make a very similar game to this one.

3. Creativity (20/100)

You could have added a bit more creativity into the script. It has very basic features and very basic code.

4. Content (20/100)

Again, very basic, but I suppose that it is a very basic game in itself.

5. Efficiency (70/100)

Would be much more efficient to load all of the bitmaps at the start of the script and keep them loaded for the whole of the script run.
Bitmaps could ahve all then been freed at the end fo the script using the procedure ScriptTerminate.
However, good use of 'for to do' loops and 'else'

6. Presentation (15/100)

A small header which could have been bigger
No function descriptions
Very basic progress report
Indenting has not been completed properly, and bold words shouldnt haven been capitalized!

7. Added Extras (0/100)

None

8. Addictiveness (5/100)

Very little Im afraid, I got bored of it quickly!

Scar Whack-A-Mole! - By Town

1. Technique (100/100)

Excellent technique used. Great use of type, arrays and loops
Nothing more to say

2. Individuality (85/100)

A good, clean, original script. Not many people can code as cleanly as you. However, it could have used more individuality. Some higher level SRL member could have done similar.

3. Creativity (70/100)

A good game idea to create. It could have used a few more original ideas? Something you added in yourself to make it more exciting.

4. Content (30/100)

Game has very basic features, however, for what it is, it is very good.

5. Efficiency (85/100)

Extrememly efficient script.
case Sender of
Spots.KeepTime: Break; // Sets up i
end;
This could have been a simple 'if then'?

Good use of loops and 'else'

6. Presentation (40/100)

Header is included, but it could have been cleaned up a bit more
No progress report
Excellent standards
No functions headers, although there are breaks inbetween each function.

7. Added Extras (0/100)

None

8. Addictiveness (30/100)

This was quite a good game, it had me going for a good while. Needs a few more original ideas to keep me hooked though!

Space Trouble by C0de

1. Technique (80/100)

Great technique used, nice use of loops.
Maybe you could have used types to clean up the variables a bit, and make them more concise.

2. Individuality (65/100)

A good script, with good use of canvases. However, quite a few people can do similar.

3. Creativity (75/100)

Excellent creativity for the script. Nice use of Sound effects, and a high score sheet! Excellent addition.

4. Content (50/100)

Nice clean code, with good features in a compact script.
Could have been a bit more exciting?

5. Efficiency (70/100)

Could have used types
Checking if the Highscores are online could have been a tiny bit mroe efficient by cutting out some useless code.
You could have freed all bitmaps on ScriptTerminate as well as at the end of the game?

6. Presentation (50/100)

Very nice header
Tiny progress report
No function headers
Scriptign standards only a tiny bit off.

7. Added Extras (60/100)

Love the highscore sheet. A very nice addition to the script.
Could have sent more meteors at a time?

8. Addictiveness (60/100)

Very addictive game, had me going for a while. Even better with the highscores as people are very competative and always want to beat someone else.

SCAR Defence by Diablo1123

1. Technique (55/100)

Very nice technique used to load all of the different functions.
Clean code used, however you should ahve put spaces between all of the functions!
Loops could have been a bit more efficient by using else
begin
FastDrawSizeTransparent(111, 296, 391, 387, Buttons[2], Buffer);
end
You don't need begin and end if there is only one line of command after the 'if then' statement.
Good loading of bitmaps
You could have used types to clean up the variables.
Use dynamic arrays instead of the static PathX, PathY : array[0..100000] of integer;
Could have used ActivateClient insetad of asking the user to do it.

2. Individuality (50/100)

A very nice script, very cleanly coded, a good original idea. However, lots of SRL memebers could do something similar

3. Creativity (40/100)

A very creative idea, and nicely done. Bitmaps could have been a bit more creative!

4. Content (40/100)

A great idea for a script. Could have been slightly more complex with attackers having life, etc?

5. Efficiency (50/100)

Pretty efficient, however you should ahve used dynamic arrays instead of clogging up SCARs memory. this could make the script crash
You should have also used types in the script to sort out the variables more.
function AreSameColor: Boolean; did you really need to convert them to RGB to test this?
Again, you don't need begin and end in the 'if then' statement if there is only one line of code following it.

6. Presentation (30/100)

No header
No progress report, although little opening dialogue
No function headers
Standards are very good apart from the spaces needed between fucntions

7. Added Extras (0/100)

None

8. Addictiveness (40/100)

This was quite a good game which I did play for a while. Needs something more to hold attention though.

Pokemon by Danrox2004

1. Technique (60/100)

Wow, a very advanced script to try! Good technique used with types, cases and loops.
Like the use of type except end
You could have condensed some of the small functions into one function, to cut down on the amount you have to play with. Will also mean the compiler has to do less.
There are no PKMN in the game!
Some functions could have been scripted better - throwError shouldn't really throw a custom error, just TerminateScript

2. Individuality (65/100)

A very nicely coded script, with lots of individuality. Some parts could be cleaned up though

3. Creativity (50/100)

Very creative idea, however uncomplete, which is a huge shame. Still needs lots of work, but its a great start!

4. Content (45/100)

A very complex script and a great idea, but it needs to be completed. Lots of diferent features will be involved to hold attention for a good while

5. Efficiency (65/100)

Efficiency is very good.
You don't need
begin
throwError(2);
end;
When there is only one line of code after the 'if then' statement.
CheckWalkable should really only be called when an arrow key is pressed to see if the user is trying to walk into an unknown area.
FreeBitmaps should be called in ScriptTerminate to free all of the bitmaps for definate. If the user terminates the script themselves, the bitmaps won't be called.

6. Presentation (45/100)

Presentation is a bit off.
No reports
No function headers
An OK header, but could be improved (It also still says version 0.1!)
Decent scripting standards.

7. Added Extras (5/100)

Lots of added extras could theoretically be added, but they haven't been yet!
The script is still incomplete.

8. Addictiveness (10/100)

Its not really playable yet =(

Mario by Mastaraymond

1. Technique (90/100)

Love the use of types, and combining types with types!
Great use of ini files
Loops and cases have been used exceptionally well, especially to load all of the settings.
Could have used 'with do' with the types to make it slightly better.
Great use of Pointers

2. Individuality (100/100)

Very individual script, with lots of great techniques used.

3. Creativity (100/100)

Unbelievably creative script, exceeding my expectations. High quality scripting, with the GUI to back it up.

4. Content (90/100)

Extremely complex, and pulled off very well. Lots of things happening at once, however, it is controlled very well.

5. Efficiency (90/100)

Very efficient script, with techniques well used.
Could have used 'with do' with your own types to make it slightly better.

6. Presentation (20/100)

No header
No function headers
No progress Report
Scripting standards are slightly off

7. Added Extras (80/100)

Stats and Highscores was a great addition to the script

8. Addictiveness (85/100)

Very addicitive game, very well presented, very well done.

Scario by Kik

1. Technique (50/100)

So many variables! You could have structures these more using types. It would have been much more effective.
You could have used more 'else's in your script to make it more efficient.

2. Individuality (50/100)

A very nice idea for a script, however, I think a lot of people could do similar.

3. Creativity (55/100)

A pretty good game, but it could have used a few more features. I saw you were thinging of Multiple goombas, thats would be good.

4. Content (45/100)

A decent game, but could have used a few more things happening at once. Slightly, bare.
Could have used some sounds

5. Efficiency (40/100)

So many global variables were unneeded! You could have turned many of them to local variable
Missing some 'else's

6. Presentation (50/100)

A decent header.
No function headers
Scripting standards are a bit off
Good progress reports.

7. Added Extras (50/100)

2 players! Very nice.

8. Addictiveness (60/100)

Not a bad game, I definately like the fact that it is a 2 player game; very nice addition

Stalingrad by The_Rs_Monkey

1. Technique (75/100)

Good use of Types in the script
All of the setings could have been loaded from an Ini file, which would save you having to put them all into the main script.

2. Individuality (85/100)

A very individual script, different to everyone elses, by being more of a strategical game rather than an action / adventure

3. Creativity (80/100)

Great use of bitmaps, with a very individual and creative idea to back them up.
However, it does seem to bot like, maybe make it so sometimes bullets miss?

4. Content (75/100)

A great idea, with lots of different content. All it needs are some irregular things happening, as it seemed to predictable and repetative after a certain point.

5. Efficiency (90/100)

Very efficient script. Only thing is could ahve used ini files to load so many variables instead of putting them all in the script

6. Presentation (20/100)

No script header
No function headers
Scripting standards a tiny bit off
No progress report

7. Added Extras (65/100)

Instruction page! Not many people did that.
Nice use of sounds.

8. Addictiveness (90/100)

A strangely addicitive game! I was playing it for quite some time.

Congratulations Mastaraymond!

Congratulations to Mastaraymond for winning the third scripting competition! The game he created was quite something, its is definately worth checking it out, and even giving it a go!

In order of First to Last, the scripting competition results are as follows:

 • 1. Mastaraymond - 655
 • 2. The_RS_Monkey - 580
 • 3. C0de - 510
 • 4. Town - 440
 • 5. Kik - 400
 • 6. Danrox2004 - 345
 • 7. Diablo1123 - 305
 • 8. Unknown Author - 215

A Final Message

Congratulations to everyone who entered. I have to admit, it's never easy making a normal script, let alone a game. Remember SCAR was not designed for this purpose, so the fact that we can even achieve this is quite something.

Anyone who got over 400 points is well on their way to becoming a great scripter. Anyone who got under, just needs to put in a little extra effort to pull themselves up.

And that about wraps up this SRL scripting competition! Make sure that you enter next time so to show all of us what you are really made up of.

If you want to learn how to script, this truly is a great way to learn. Help is at hand to anyone who asks politely, and is willing to help themselves!

For now, we worship Mastaraymond. Next time, make sure it is you…

What don't you agree with?

some of your grading for The_Rs_Monkey

And how you mixed some of the grading categories together. For example, you lowered people's grade in individuality because "other people could do similar" when that should have gone into content, because individuality, to me, has to do with the originality of the script, not whether other people could do the same, if they had thought of the same thing.

but i guess it was your choice, and it depends on how you look at each category.
