Hello Mates, good news I got in the University I been wanting to… Finished my basics now going into my core classes next semester, although I have about 5-6 months until than. I was wondering since my major is Computer Information Systems, I was wondering what I can do until than to prepare myself and have a tad knowledge what I am about to come across next semester and the next 1-2 years.

What is something I should know or have knowledge about? I do not know anything about Linux, should I get into that? Or what is a good heads start I should do!

Thank you mates

-Cheers :)

Note: I'd like to thank SRL for helping me throughout my teen years and getting me into programming and such, and managing 3.2+ GPA. Love y'all all, and for the youngsters stay active and you'll always learn new!
Sorry for grammar and bad english haha, about 3 am (dead tired).

Learn a language perf. Java/C++
Either one of those will prepare you to learn any other language

Computer architecture should be your next step. Learning how computers operate on the most basic level. A good start to get you prepared for this is to have a good foundation on c programming language. Then learning an assembly language should come next. MIPS is a good assembly language.

Algorithms and data structures will be coming up.

Is it a BA or BS? If it is a BS, I would perfect your advanced math skills before going into them. Personally, I wasn't prepared for some of the math classes, and it knocked me on my ass.

hey, to start well done on getting in!

i'm a second year CompSci student in the UK, im now fairly good in Java, C, Objective-C, SQL, and using UNIX and shell scripting. i had NO experience at all before i went to uni. personally, from how my course has been set out i would say Java would be a good one to learn, pretty much my entire first year used Java (with a little C and assembly).

as others said, architecture is a good one to go with and i would also advise a little computer security/networks.

finally, as Vusn said … maths! this year i have done more algorithm optimisation than i thought humanly possible. algorithms and data structures are what seems to underly everything!
