How Long have You Played Runescape?
6 Year(s)

Are you affilated in anyway with Jagex LTD?
No

Were you Referred to SRL?

What is your general programming knowledge?
I took one data structures class at Carnegie Mellon University two summers ago. The rest is self-taught. I regularly use Ruby, JavaScript, Clojure, and Lua. I'm very competent with Ruby and decent with the others.

Are you a member of any other communities?
Any community or just botting ones?

This is the only botting community I've joined. Outside of it, I'm also a member of Hacker News, MetaFilter, and MeFightClub (the kindest gaming community that I know of.)

Tell us about yourself…
From: microsphere
Hi all,

I'm a high school senior living in St. Louis, Missouri. My memory is fuzzy, but I believe that I started playing Runescape late 2001 and quit in 2007. I came back to the old school servers for the nostalgia and stumbled across Villavu. The friendly atmosphere here is wonderful and SRL itself is awesome. Scripting for RS reminds me of the excitement that I had when I first learned how to program.

I'm applying for a membership because there seems to be a lot that I'm missing out on here. Members have access to resources that non-members don't. Just take a look at the OSR Script subforum. There's only one or two scripts there that can be learned from. The rest were created by people entirely new to scripting.

I have no interest in leeching, I would never gold farm, and I am a decent programmer. So while I'm not entirely sure of why an "SRL Member" rank is necessary, I don't think that it is for keeping people like me out. I would really appreciate the opportunity to continue contributing as a full member of this community.

Thanks for reading,
Dave

Hey mate, while your script may be fine (Didn't look at it :P), your activity is sorely lacking!
SRL Membership is as much, if not more of a Community Rank than a scripting rank.

I'd advise you to stay here for a bit longer and get to know us before applying! Most, if not all of the members proceeding me will vote No as they regard activity as tantamount to the script.

Best of luck on your next appliance :)

In that case, I may have misunderstood Villavu. I'm not really looking for a community based on exclusivity for the sake of exclusivity. I understand wanting to keep the leechers out. But what could be the reason for keeping a community closed to new members? I mean, take away the whole scripting aspect. What would be the purpose of SRL Members then?

I'm asking honestly, because that sort of attitude raises a bit of a red flag for me.

It's not so much about being exclusive it's just that SRL Member is more of a community rank and people like to see that your here not only for the scripts but for the community.

I think you misunderstood :/
In SRL Members we have a lot of high end scripts which regular users would probably drop a lot of money for, the community aspect is to make sure that someone who bought themselves a script to apply with and has low activity cant get in.

I understand that perspective, but it rubs me the wrong way. I've been reading the Simba and SRL source, submitting patches when someone breaks the build, and working on improving a few things (I've nearly got DTM Editor matching rotated DTMs on the minimap.) The only other script I've even used here was the mouse catcher! So for me to be greeted with, "how do we know you don't just want our scripts? We're going to keep you away from our tutorials/scripts/resources until you prove yourself" is disheartening.

Listen, if this community isn't the place for me, that's all right. There are other places around the net that I can spend my time. You guys were kind while I was here, and I appreciate that. But I do wish that the attitude towards membership was congruent with the attitude around the rest of the site.

That's not what we're meaning to say. We're meaning, you have to get out there and actively pursue helping the general community. We need to see how you interact with people, your maturity level, ect.
You have access to almost all of the tutorials and resources Villavu has to offer.
TL;DR We just need to see you post more often

I'm both saddened and confused by the reaction here. I would never have thought this to be so controversial. I've hung out on IRC, helped a few other users on the forums, and made two micro-patches on GitHub. Quite honestly, I have no idea what you think could go wrong if I could suddenly access a few more forums. The only explanation that makes sense is Sin's, but I don't believe that it's a valid objection.

Really, I don't get it. This is a website for cheating on RuneScape! And to see how seriously you're taking this… it's a bit silly is all.

Really it isn't about cheating on RS, we are a learning community first then a cheating community tbh I can say 80% of the SRL members don't even play RS anymore they still stick around to help script and be a general asset to the community.
The only thing I can really say and it will sound like much of the same is Attitude>Scripting ability, and I can't "judge" an attitude off 16 posts im not saying it is easy at 100 posts but it is significantly easier to see who is in it for the long run rather than the "I am a great scripter, let me in your club…then I will leave and you will never see me again" type of person…

Out of the 3 or so members that I have seen (Who contributed TONS to the community via scripting ability, but had less than 30 posts) get members 0 of them are still active; id much rather someone with mediocre skills than a mastermind who isn't active enough to do anything.

Its late, my minds a fog sorry if it sounds like I am rambling…

How I vote:
Characteristics (Either A: I stalk the person for about 10 minutes, I want to see them help at least 1 person, provide useful feedback at least once, hold a conversation, be kind and courteous.)
Script: (There is a guide somewhere on what the script needs exactly, don't remember it off the top of my head)

I like to see someone put effort INTO the forums community by posting before becoming an SRL member, that is how I vote there are other members here who vote purely on scripting ability though and while it isn't a wrong way to vote it isn't the way I vote.

—

I wish you the best
Also what SIN said is pretty much 100% accurate, it has happened to us in the past and we strive to not let it happen again.
Also this is a serious matter to us at least, you may not see it as so but becoming a member is a privilege not a right and we cherish the work put in to become one.

This is one of the guides you are looking for. Your script isn't bad, and is no reason to vote no.

Script aside, the first 3 questions in that guide are:

From: [Daniel]
Are you nice and helpful around the forums?
Have you got to know many people from the community?
Have you been here for a while (greater than one/two months)?

These are essential to gauge not only your activity around the forums but also your attitude. It is clear that you are a smart, mature individual and not some 15 year old kid. You potentially have a lot to offer this community, but you've only been here for a few weeks. How do we know that you will stick around? You have to show that you are committed to this community by engaging and contributing regularly.

Many members will look at your join date and vote no then and there, because they know there is no way you could have demonstrated the above. You shouldn't merely think of a membership title as "I'm a good scripter" but also "I'm an active contributor to the community". Hopefully this clears up your confusion.

It saddens you that we need to see how you interact on our forum with the label of "member"? SRL members are role models; the fact we even have an application process should be evidence enough that we would critique you on your application. What is especially important here is that we are (generally) catering to a younger crowd; we are a friendly place that you would feel safe to have your kids hangout at. If you want just a cheating website there are many others to choose from (probably easier application processes too).

You seem intelligent yet many of our members have pointed you towards what we are looking for in our applicants, but you consistently choose not to accept their (positive) assessments.

If you were to reassess your attitude towards our community and participate more I would be much more inclined to vote yes.
As of now, no.

I'm saddened because I thought I found a neat new website and then… it's middle school all over again. There's nothing that a barrier such as this does to further the community. Like I said, it's exclusivity for the sake of exclusivity. I mentioned MeFightClub in my application – take it as an example. That website is the very best of online communities, and they've accomplished that by being extremely friendly and open. There's no "in-group" there and certainly no vetting process where members make newbies prove that they're worth joining the community.

That sort of website is my baseline for a great community. I love its attitude and I love what it has become because of it. You and I can have differing ideas on what makes a good community, and that's fine. But I never expected this from such a superficially welcoming site, and that's where the confusion comes from. I completely get wanting to sort out those who will have a negative effect on the community from the rest, but this is just cliquey. You need 100 posts and proof that I will stay for a while before you'll let me in as a member? If I were taking anything away from the community, I could understand that. But that's not the case. In the worst scenario, you let me in and never see me again (which wouldn't have happened, anyway.) Is that really such a bad outcome? I've been a member of many online communities, and Villavu is the only one that seems to think that it is.

Wow, I really hope you don't think I'm still vying for votes at this point. I'm posting because the discussion is interesting

By the way, please don't think of this as an attack on Villavu. You guys have a great site here. It's just that this incident left me bewildered and frustrated. If this were a process to remove the bad eggs from the community, I wouldn't have anything against it. But it's clearly much more. You guys aren't just trying to keep out those who have proven themselves to be bad, you're trying to keep out those who haven't proven themselves to be good enough for you. You guys all come off as kind people, but that attitude makes me wonder if I just don't know you well enough.

I think it's more to do with making you work for it - there is no satisfaction in being awarded something straight away - you will most likely lose your motivation to stick around. This barrier helps to motivate people to stick around.

But no one has ever become an SRL Member as such a new member of the community (Join Date: Feb 2013, Posts: 17). We just want to see it to believe it.

The SRL Member's rank is not "exclusivity for the sake of exclusivity" as you put it. It is a rank that people on this forum are supposed to look up to and use an example in terms of behaviour and such. Please don't get me wrong, I can see you are highly capable of being a mature person; the language you use speaks for itself - that's not something that can be "put on". But again, we just want to see a bit more of it. We want to ensure you're willing to stay with us long term! That doesn't mean you have to post every single day of the year for 5 years - of course, you, like us, have a life!

For the reasons of maturity, good script and a belief that you will benefit in this community (and I'm sure we will also benefit from you), I will vote yes. I want to encourage you to stay here with us. To be honest, we need more people like you. People who are open to suggestions, have their own opinions, and know how to voice them with a mature approach. You have actually made my day with this applicant.

Another thing I can think of is being proud of being an SRL Member. Being proud of something, in my opinion, means you have to earn it. I was so happy when I got accepted because I had put in so much time, work and effort. I even told some of my peers at school (though they had no idea what was so special). I know you are capable of this. For a person like you, it should be no sweat!

Remember, all (I think) you should have to do, is wait a few weeks. During those weeks, just reply with helpful messages to people on the forums. Do something special even, like write a short guide (those usually make a good impression wit us). Then, apply again, and I'm positive you will be able to get in.

Please stay!

Dude, you don't need a rank to be a "member" of this community. It's just a title, that is meant to be more of a community title anyway. All you get is a couple more boards and a yellow username (respect of community yadayadayada). I know many people, like Olly, who were amazing "members" of this community long before they were officially an "srl member"

^^^

It's a forum community thing, but registered members would probably see it and class the user as "more trusted" user if that makes sense, obviously that can sometimes not be the case but it is most of the time, so they expect a few things along the lines of, scripts they post to be at a decent level that won't get you banned really easily if you used them, and expect them to "behave" when posting on the forums, help out new users best they can,

Like others have mentioned you clearly have most of these qualities, but most members don't like to vote yes if you have only been here for a short time, because they can't confirm you will stay here once you get the rank, and it's a shame to get it then just leave, so you sort of have to prove you are going to stick around first,

I won't vote either way atm, but don't be discouraged if you don't make it this time, stick around and try again :)

I guess what it comes down to is this: if you lost your member status, would you feel just as connected to the community as you do now?

I'm certain that you would not. There have been plenty of times that I've clicked a link only to be blocked by the "you do not have permission to access this page" error. Here's an example, straight out of @Benny's signature: http://villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=89539. In that particular case I could easily PM him. There have been plenty of other times where users have referenced a blocked thread, however, and it's ridiculous for me to have to do that every time.

My issue is that you have created an in-group and given them their own forums for no apparent reason. Why fragment the community like that? There are a few junior members here with thousands of posts who have been rejected multiple times. Was it ever really a concern that they would distribute your scripts? Why else would you reject them? Is there no way to let them in as a full member of the community without endorsing their posts or coding ability?

The current system is below you guys. There's no reason to be so cliquey. Nothing bad is going to happen if you become a more open community.

No offense to anyone but i really would not care, hence the reason why i never applied for members. A yellow name doesn't exactly give you "god mode", If your helpful and nice around the forums and such people will notice it, Its not like if your not a srl member your going to go unnoticed.

And bennys sig redirects to the black market which is jr member + which is there only to stop scammers.

Tbh, I like the gold name, but it wouldn't bother me too much if I lost it since people already know I got it.

Okay here a few facts:

- I do not want trading real life value -> in game value outside the black market. The black market is accessible after 6 months and 300 posts or becoming a member. Reason? Because we don't want scams.

- We do not have resources or tutorials in the member section.

- We have almost no scripts in the member section.

- You do not get any unfair pro other people won't get.

You use Clojure <3

I have to vote no based on your forum activity (as already stated above several times), but you sound like a smart guy and will end up getting members in the future if you are a little more active.

I've always seen the whole rank system as a way for people to enjoy learning and improving their skills, instead of watching their hard work go unnoticed. It's not really about bragging (at least not to me), because really anyone has the potential to get to members if they work hard enough.

Youre right about the link I should probably add junior members+ this is simply to prevent scamming. I run an honest business and would prefer not to be ruined by some dishonest people.

It's just to provide a level of security.

You have the skills required. I would have voted yes immediately, However judging on your responses on this thread, I personally feel that you do not understand the purpose of SRL, the open source nature of SRL, and you lack maturity in many of your replies.

I understand that perspective, but it rubs me the wrong way. I've been reading the Simba and SRL source, submitting patches when someone breaks the build, and working on improving a few things (I've nearly got DTM Editor matching rotated DTMs on the minimap.)

If you have certainly done all that, I applaud you and you should add your achievements to the original topic. Do not hide your achievements and expect us to dig through the forums to find out what you did.

We're going to keep you away from our tutorials/scripts/resources until you prove yourself" is disheartening.
…

My issue is that you have created an in-group and given them their own forums for no apparent reason. Why fragment the community like that?

SRL4,SRL5,SRL6,SRL-OSR,Simba are OSS and available on GitHub for download. Our beginner, intermediate, and advance tutorials are even available to guests.

All SRL members use these guides and tutorials to gain their status.

SRL member scripts use the same set of publicly available APIs. There is no SRL-special build.

Thus, I fail to see what "resources" we are hiding from you.

The Runescape community generally tends to be made of leechers and 12 year old raging kids who just hit puberty. SRL-Member is a necessary evil to promote those with better abilities and make such people recognizable. It's an incentive to group people with similar passion and abilities as these people collaborate to help the SRL project in the future.

I'm both saddened and confused by the reaction here. I would never have thought this to be so controversial.

By applying for SRL membership, you have made your own choice to subject yourself to scrutiny. You showed potential, yet you childishly decide to embark on process of "self-victimization". Hence I don't feel you are quite ready yet for the gold rank.

Meanwhile, you haven't added anything new to the conversation. All you've done is necro a week old discussion that I thought was over.

I disagree with the points you've made, but your post comes off as an attack more than anything else. Reviving a week old thread just to insult someone shows much more immaturity than any of my posts.

Can we be done here, guys? There's really nothing more to say.

In the context of voting for SRL members, threads stay open for 2 weeks(i think). All discussions during that time period are thoroughly valid. So no, I did not "nerco" anything.

I am quite bemused at to why you decided to regard my reply as an "attack". I guess this justifies my vote.
