Why do you bot?

A simple question that I am curious to hear the answer to.
Personally I bot because I enjoy the quests immensely, but despise the grind required to complete these quests. Now this isn't a big problem at lower levels… Mining, smelting and smithing enough bronze bars to hit iron is very accessible and easy to achieve, and doesn't feel hugely grindy. After each inventory you get a level up or two to spur you along to keep training. But smelting and smithing the thousands of mith bars needed to hit addy? Now, that is a whole different story that I don't think really needs telling…
Seriously, achieving (if you could even call it that with the hours wasted) things like 70 prayer or smithing legitimately is extremely time consuming, boring and at the end of it you feel like it was all for nothing, once the next quest or task requires level 80. I have done many jobs, ranging from lawn mowing to dishwashing that I enjoyed more than RS grinding. While training some skills like magic is somewhat easy and very possible legitimately if you often use useful tools like teleport, superheat and high alchemy, I do have to wonder what on earth Jagex was thinking when they made these level and xp requirements. To be honest RS feels like it was designed to be botted to get the full gameplay value.
Probably the worst culprit of this is agility… It is IMMENSELY useful with its run regen and shortcuts, yet it is also painfully slow and boring to train (legit) and offers little income, even when doing the minigames, especially on crowded servers or if you are just unlucky. Its as if jagex sat down and said "Lets piss off our users…"
I honestly feel that the playerbase of RS would literally triple if they made it less grindy, which they could surely use with everyone ragequitting over EoC.
But I do think Jagex is trying to lessen the grind as of late… The Runespan, for instance, is much more interesting than running to and from a bank and alter, but it does offer 0 income. But after getting to level 51 RC legit via the span I got bored of that, too. EoC also makes combat much more interactive
And another question comes to mind: would you still bot if rs had the grind removed, lessened or replaced with something much more enjoyable? Because honestly, if I could legitimately get to 60 construction legit without my mind going to mush, I would.

Why do I bot personally? Well Id have to say it really boils down to one thing…
I am very much against being inefficient. Why spend my time doing something when someone else can do it for me? (some of you may call this being lazy)
Why take the stairs when I can take an elevator?

I personally don't like doing repetitive tasks.
For example, I don't really enjoy cursing a monk 500 times.
And to be honest, it helps when you need things done fast, like sudoku.
I could either enter everything I see into a solver and input it back in, or I could fix something up to do it automatically.
And good thing I did.

Yuck.
Well I haven't actually 'botted' in quite some time. Usually 5 (or so) nights a week I'll run my herb-farmer over night, for both the Farming XP as well as the herbs. Lately I just spend my time playing OSR.
For a handful of us it was never about the
gain of running scripts, it was simply about creating them. I can solidly say scripting is a hobby of mine and I enjoy it for challenge; what I gain in the process of fabricating & testing a script is just the bonus, from my point of view. Receiving positive feedback from the community, or just knowing it's running correctly, is motivation, not only to continue but push further.

Which reminds me of JD's quote, the gratification comes in the doing, not in the results :)
I play Runescape on and off, and have done for many years. I find that I am too busy with other things in life, such as work and study to play legitimately. If I do play I always have this feeling of guilt in the back of my mind that I should be doing something more productive with my time. The older I get I realize that there is a whole world out there, and you only live once. I'm not going to waste it clicking my mouse to achieve a few woodcutting levels, which may leave you with some sense of achievement and satisfaction, but at the end of the day those levels don't really mean anything. Learning Pascal has given me a greater sense of achievement than gaining any amount of levels on Runescape ever will. It is knowledge that I can use for the rest of my life.

Like flight mentioned, I personally make scripts because it's fun and for the challenge, once you get hooked on programming, it's more fun than actually playing the game itself, and RuneScape color botting/scripting is a quite unique programming experience you can't get anywhere else, not to mention this community is simply amazing compared to the Java ones,
As for why I actually bot, I can't really say, I don't know what it is, a combination of liking to watch something I made run and manage itself, a script can be a longterm project, by using it you get the ideas and are better able to build on your current work and make it better,
It's also kind of "fun" (maybe a better word would be addictive) to come home from work/college/sleep and check on your progress, see what stats / items you have gained, although I don't normally ever bot for gold/items only for stats myself,
As for releasing scripts, there is always things that will only be spotted by someone else, meaning suggestions are key to turning a good script into a great script, so it's a massive help to get such great feedback from a community like this ;)

I started to bot because I had enough of grinding like you said. I worked my ass off to hit 2300 total before realizing that everyone else around me was botting and actually being able to relax without the incessant clicking - I had to play at least 4 hours a day otherwise I would feel the addiction.
It was also getting in the way of training fr swimming and doing work and so I eventually turned to botting.
My goal now is to finally max out and complete this game. That's why I bot.

I'm going to follow @Flight's opinion on this one, as per usual :p
For me, it's changed a lot over time.
Initially, of course, I was here to improve my character by essentially removing my interaction with the game.
Then, I became a bit more relaxed, and botted a bit to gain a few levels here and then, so I could have fun in the game, and save time.
Ultimately, I ended up just creating scripts and enjoying the challenge of how well/long it could run, on mule accounts really.
Nowadays, I do neither :p

Unlike any of you, I don't really have a point to bot on RS. I just… like it. I don't know, I don't even play the game, and I don't know why I need to get my stats up, but I still do it. In the end I will have a maxed account, or a ban, or a highly levelled account, but I won't use it anyway. My botting is useless, I don't know why I bot. D:

Why do I bot? Why do I script? Why do I cheat the game?
Why choose this as my goal?
Well, you might as well ask, why climb the highest mountain? Why, eighty-five years ago, fly the Atlantic? Why go to the moon?
I choose to bot. I choose to script, along with many of my peers here. We choose to cheat the game and do the other things, not because they are easy… but because they are hard. Because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills. Because that challenge is one we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win.

When I first discovered botting my friend said to me I would be banned by the time I get 99 strength, now look where I am I have almost 17 99s and not a single ban and also this site has started getting me interested in computer programming as I used my private script to get 99 smithing and if I would have gone to powerbot I would of never new even how to program.

I started botting when my friends introduced it to me. Why? Its just easier. Why play legit to gain all those hard levels when you can have a bot do it for you? My reason is I'm simply too lazy.

I was extremely reluctant to bot at first - my friend sold me a script back in the day for 5m rsgp, and I was scared as hell to use it. Back then, I actually enjoyed the grind, just because I enjoyed the community, and I was young and had nothing better to do for those two hours a day in my life.
Then, I became a busier person with school and such becoming harder. Thats when I began to bot most of my stats, because I was determined to join all those people who had loads of quest points and went to GWD and other bosses like it was a daily chore.
I always botted for xp, rarely did I ever bot soley for cash. Right now I'm botting because I'm a pretty busy person and I don't really feel like grinding through OSRS. So over the years, I guess I've been botting for different reasons.
Although I'm pretty new to scrpiting, I can say that I also enjoy modifying scripts and creating really basic ones just to test out my knowledge and see how far I can go, so I guess I can include that in my reasons also.
I bot because I'm lazy as f*ck.

Take the elevator? ofc i do. Last winter i was with my sister and we were going like 100 yards… I started walking to the car and she told me that god gave me legs for a reason, I replied with, "He also gave me a car." I ended up walking, but it remains the same. Why should i exert all this extra energy when i have something that is designed to not make me exert this energy?
Im a firm believer in the philosophy that if you give a 'lazy' person a job, they will find the most efficient way of doing it.

I agree with that, a lazy person will never do something the efficient way, just a quicker way.
Being lazy doesn't make you efficient, and vice versa.

My Botting started out as a challenge between me and an old college friend to see who could get banned first ( First to get banned got a fiver but to make it worth betting on we had to use our main accounts which each where from early late rs1 or early rs2). Neither of us got banned, but i got a taste for thwarting authority, its progressed from there where I'm now looking to write scripts to "screw the man".

it's no fun without being able to farm while maxing. i enjoyed farming more than maxing. and it's becoming too much of a hassle to farm since jagex hates me and keeps banning my accounts. one day maybe i will finish who knows. and yeah of course i'll be there!

I bot for 3 reasons.
1)To level up my main to access a greater portion of the game.
2)The challenge of writing a script accessible at said variety of areas of the game.
3)To gather some money to afford leveling up the skills that need to be leveled up more to access new areas for scripting purposes. (I do not buy/sell gold for real-world trading)
All-in-all) For the challenge and to access possible greater challenges.

I'll run my herb-farmer
Ooohhhh … what is this herb-farmer you speak of?? :).
I personally bot for some of the reasons listed above. What it really boils down to is time. Between a wife (that doesnt game) and 2 young kids, and a love for games theres no possible way I could play the way I want to and still have a life. In the end if it comes down to family or game time …. family always wins. With botting I can actually do both.
Perhaps the real question is why script … and Flight's answer is perfect.
