Human Eradication
—

Lets discuss this scenario:

There is a new virus that cannot be cured and is spread through bodily fluids (sex, blood transfusion etc.), this virus turns you into a vegetable (Brain dead) within 12 years of contracting it but you wouldn't feel the symptoms of it until 11 years in.

There is no cure
There will never be a cure
If you have this virus and spread it to a pregnant or impregnate a women the baby will also have the virus
The world health organization is able to create a one time test that can find EVERY single person with virus "X" and they perform the test once.
There is no way to detect that you have the virus until 4 years of having it (Besides for that one time test that would happen by the WHO).

Would you be willing to put everyone with virus X onto an island, and have them breed themselves out of existence or would that be too cruel (if you picked the latter, they would live in regular population infecting others unknowingly/others infect others/chain continues)

Some of your relatives/friends could also have the virus, nobody would know until the WHO published their results on who the victims are…

Would you
A) Put EVERY person with this virus onto an island and have them eventually die out on their own. (They did nothing wrong though, it wasn't their fault they got infected)

or

B) Have them live among everyone and slowly infect people unknowingly.

My personal opinion will come later.

I wouldn't want to live on some lonely island, where is option C? (Chances are, I'll probably be one of those people who carry it :()
Right now I'd go with option A, because living on an island isn't nice - have you seen the series Arrow?! Or better…Cast Away! That movie with Tom Hanks where he makes a doll with his bloody hand and a coconut!

Post your opinion please so everyone can see!

PS: Just out of interest - bodily fluids includes urine, mucus or saliva (any of those)?? If I were to urinate on someone they would be at risk of getting infected too if they were to say swallow my urine? Or If I would french kiss someone and exchange a lot of saliva would I be at risk depending on how sloppy the kiss is?

Also remember there are tons of people with this virus you will all be on the same island.
Bodily fluids as in having sex, or sharing needles/injecting someone with your own blood.

But what about friends, family and possibly partner if he/she doesn't carry the virus?
Besides, like I already said - island life is not for me. I've been to boarding school in the UK… :(

I don't think they have to be put on an island. I think after the WHO identify who is infected then there should be a law preventing those people doing it (with non-infected people at least). They should have the chance to live out the last years of their life and do what they want to do within normal society. IMO.

Treat it like HIV. Once you know you have it, you are legally obliged to inform everyone before you have dangerous contact with them. If you fail, then you knowingly endangered the lives/health of other people and that's worth jail time. Jail time with a short lifespan should be encouragement enough to avoid most of the involved situations.

Yea thats probably the best way to handle it,

My opinion would be based on the rate at which it spreads and level of infectivity, if it is a particularly nasty virus, that is likely to cause the extinction of the human race, then I'd vote Island option (even if I was infected), if it's just another virus like we've always had, what nivek said :p

We need more points and info on the theoretical virus ;)

Sounds like you're talking about AIDS.
I'd pick to isolate them.

Woot, "best way!"

Also, more information would be needed. Is transmission at the same rate of other STDs? For example men *tend to* have much lower chances of being infected with most virus based STDs simply because most men avoid situations that cause them to accept any bodily fluids; whereas women have extremely high infection rates for exactly that reason.

Obviously A, would vote that way whether I have the virus myself or not.

If someone I really loved had to go to this "island", I'd go with them.

No need to exterminate all mankind, you know.

This is kinda like the "would you kill an innocent child to find a cure to cancer" or something like.

Hard to say. It depends. Are you infected yourself or not?

1. If no one I care about was infected, Id choose A.
2. If they were infected I'd go with them, whether or not I had the virus.

3. Id develope a cure and be the ruler of the world.

Option A would be fine if the island had enough resources to sustain however many people were living there.

Failing that,

I don't know why you're responding to my posts runehack, you're on my ignore list, can't see. I thought that was clear.

That's true, let them live the rest of their life out in comfort and have enough recourses to do whatever they'd wish. Kind of what they do for sick kids where they make one of their wishes come true, aka go to disneyland or whatever.

I'd rather put myself on an island with the people I know that aren't infected.

But Yeah I'd choose option A - :)

Ive been sick with something for 6 years that doctors cant figure out and might not, who knows. But you never accept anything other then getting your self better. If you accept anything less, then there is no point in living. Living just to be alive is pointless. Same as dying just to die. No reason for either. Nothing is impossible, Its depends how much hell you are willing to go through to get better.

Ontopic: If they will infect people unknowingly , then how will you know who to is sick and who to put on the island in the first place? Its pointless, your assuming you will know everything and account for every possibility, which is impossible.

Its hypothetical, ina hypothetical world anything is possible.

We have one test, where you can find EVERY person who has it and you are able to send them to this island no one will sneak away they will all go willingly.

The question at hand is would you do it?

ill put a poll up!

I voted YES put them on an island, with every possible resource so that they can live their remanining life the way anyone should in similar situation.

Saint//+

2013-03-09 23:47:32

how long does the test take to get results? cause even if you put them on an island depending on how long the test takes to process other people could become infected in that time making the island pointless.

id like to think A is immoral but considering its for the greater good and saving mankind that seems like a good choice. although i never really liked people much anyway. -_- this is a tough choice…

If we forget about the logistics etc. I would say YES, put them all on an island. And if my wife happens to be one of these infected ppl I'll join her there :P

This is exactly what they used to do to people with leprosy :p

[XoL]

2013-03-18 17:26:11

Its one test, instant results and everyone being tested is pre-captured only the people who don't have it get released right away.

They miss no one, and the test is 100% accurate.
