I feel that this thread has been long overdue, it's something I've been meaning to do for a while. I've actually been getting a bit sentimental. So, instead of directly telling you why, let's start with a little bit of history…
I joined SRL here at the end of 2007, obviously looking for a bot. I have no idea why I spontaneously decided to do so, but hey, I did. Now, back in these days, there was a huge limit on the accessibility of bots on SRL. Once you had joined, you had to wait 7 days, and make at least 10 posts before you were granted access to the Junior Member scripts. In addition to this, there was a large amount of encouragement for people to learn how to bot. So, needless to say, I made my first auto talker (you should check it out, it might make you cry). And so the learning began…
Then, when the 7 days were over, I suddenly found that I wasn't particularly interested in botting any more; I found I was enjoying coding far more. So, I kept at it, applied with a somewhat horrific alcher for membership (obviously got denied), and then within two months of being here, I had established my fletching script, that was more about the interface than anything.. And after a stressful week of watching the application thread, they let me in!
So, we move on a bit, about 6 months down the line. By this point, I was choosing which GCSEs to do at school, so I naturally went for IT, after my new found interest in Computer Science. Things continued, I was far less active, but I was coding a bit more OOP than before.
Blah blah blah, 2 years later, similar choice to the GCSEs, expect with A-levels, and I had taken up Computer. This is when I started to really get into programming, doing things that actually had some real functionality. Coding in the languages you all love to hate: Java and VB. Interlaced with some basic web action with PHP (huge shoutout to @Tootoot222 for basically imparting his godly PHP knowledge to me, over some very laggy TeamViewer sessions).
And so, when it came to 2011/2012, I was making that fun decision of where to go to university, and what course to take. Now, of course I took up Computer Science. Sadly I pulled out of the application last year due to personal reasons. But I'm doing it all again this year!
So, thank you to SRL for starting it all, this September I'll be going off into the independent world of university, to study that subject that I discovered I loved by accident.
Thank you SRL, you basically carved the route of my future!
TL;DR SRL made me code - code me my change my life
