Why don't we use SVN's

Why don't we use svn's to keep scripts updated without redownloading? If you don't know what a svn is, it gets the files off google code, downloads them, and can be updated with the click of a button. simple way to keep up to the latest version.

we used svn's wayyyyyy long ago, like 5 years ago or so. there are many methods to auto update scripts, within simba itself.. I don't think people liked SVN ( I know I didn't) but I'm unaware of the actual reason it isn't used anymore

some scripts auto update when you run them, they check for a new version on someones site etc

I prefer git over svn. Much more intuitive. I'm using exactly what you described. For instance, check the script in my sig..

git is used over SVN. SVN was used before, but svn is extremely similar to git.

The Simba developers are working on a Script Manager at the moment, so that's the reason why we're still posting the scripts on the forum; the managing system isn't working yet.

Approved.

Jokes aside, I think SVN (or something like that) would be good to use, I like it :)

SVN seems to require the ssl dlls to be accessed correctly, even when retrieval attempts are made from non-ssl based websites (http). Perhaps that is entirely my experience, but from personal testing and writing my own scripts, that is why even custom auto-updaters seem to run more smoothly in GIT (most people don't have the ssl ddls).

Scripters can add auto-update systems to their scripts, I know Ashaman likes it a lot.
There is supposed to be a script manager in the works for a long while (2 years? lol) and I know that CynicRus had done something about it up recently, don't know about the progress though.

I dont know much about them to be honest, just throwing the idea out there. I am sure if someone wanted to use it, they will.

I used github for some old scripts (no, they don't work now): https://github.com/MerlijnWajer/SRL-Scripts

Github is awesome for script management, and a few people have auto-updaters enabled. The downside with auto-updates is, you have think through your commits(updates) more, introducing a bug would be more serious.

But, I like the idea, maybe in the future there will be some sort of library for updating, with Simba having it's own git server, and GitHub use being optional (You'd have to think through repo creation, maybe junior members approve repo requests?).

I usually try to use github, just depends on what I'm feeling for each script :)

That's why you use branches to develop in git. You can have a development branch and a stable branch. That's one of the very reasons it's so much better than SVN: branching is easy. I personally prefer Mercurial, but git is very similar and I like it as well. It would be very nice to have a git/Mercurial repository for approved scripts. Developers could do all their work in their own repository and submit a pull request when they release a new version. This should definitely be a separate repository from Simba though.

Does git run natively on Windows nowadays? Last I knew, it required cygwin, which is a rather cumbersome dependency. Mercurial runs natively on Linux, OS X, and Windows. git runs best on Linux, and I'm not sure of the status on its Windows/OS X ports. Anyways, this is important because I believe most Simba users run Windows. (I exclusively run Linux, myself)
