jif
I think gif is right because I have usually heard it like that and jif sound's weird to me, even though the creators of the gif pronounce it jif.

Meme is meant to be pronounced (pron.: /?mi?m/; meem), but I went from saying MEEEMEEE to mem, both of which are wrong. :o

It's definitely "meem." I don't like those "pronunciation book" videos, but it's most definitely "meem." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meme gives the pronunciation, and the first citation explains it again.

It's fine if you think it sounds right, but you're wrong

normally I look up a word to check how it should be said, and respect the creators.

Normally I'd side with the creators, but the G in gif stands for graphical, which is a hard G. Hence why I chose gif over jif :)

That does make sense, and it's been the argument for 10+ years.. I prefer saying jif just because of how many people say it incorrectly. I'm sure the creator says it should be pronounced "jif" just to rustle peoples jimmies himself.

I can't really think of anything that has had more discussion on how it's said

My mother tongue being french, I have a few weird experiences with pronunciation. Therefore, I'll use this thread to suggest to change the pronunciation of some words to avoid having other people face the same disarray I did.

First, the "th" sound should be eradicated and forgotten.

In high school, at the middle of an English class, for whatever reason (I don't remember the subject), I exclaimed myself "I'm Guy The Turd", attempting to proudly say I'm the third person in a row in my lineage with the name Guy. Yes, major fail.

Also, something is absolutely wrong with the way you guys say lieutenant. How the hell does it turn into lou-te-nant? For about 4 seasons of Star Trek, I was convinced Loutenant was the name of a character that had no screen time at all but was mentioned all the time (like "You'll go on this mission with Loutenant.").

Lastly, why do you say "wind" as "wend", but "rewind" as, well, "rewind"?

I hate you all.

But there are too many words that use the letters "th". You can't replace all of them :D

I agree that there is something wrong with lieutenant. Except in Canada (and all the other commonwealth countries & UK) it's pronounced "leftenant" for some weird reason (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lieutenant#Pronunciation)

Afaik, it's only pronounced "Loutenant" in the US

I say wind like "Winned" (As in I winned a trophy for my grammar :D)

Rewind is pronounced rewind because historically it meant to "re-wind" as in to wind something up (think wind-up toy :D)

Really? That's not what I hear though.

By the way, leftenant is just as awkward. No idea how you guys turn "lieu" (two syllables in french, probably the language you took the word from) into one random syllable.

I'm with you on that one, makes no sense to me either :p

From: Wikipedia
Middle English spellings suggest that the /lju?-/ and /l?f-/ pronunciations may have existed even then.[2] The rare Old French variant spelling luef for Modern French lieu ('place') supports the suggestion that a final [w] of the Old French word was in certain environments perceived as an [f].[2]

Debian:
Dehb-ee-yuhn
Deeh-biyun
This is how the devs pronounce it, named after the creator's then girlfriend, must be kinda awkward, having one of the most widely used (if you count ubuntu as deb-based) Linux distros named after your Ex.

Ubuntu:
oo-boo-ntoo
oo-buh-ntoo
Also how devs pronounce it, it is an African word and this is most likely the reason for the pronunciation.

Linux:
Lih-nuhks
Leeh-nuhks
Named after Linus(Leeh-nus) Torvalds, this is a forgivable mistake, however Lih-nuhks is the standardized way of pronouncing the name.

GNU:
Newh
guh-Newh
The G is silent, but some people still kinda pronounce it with the G.

# (on another, but very similiar vein):
Hashtag
Crunch, bang, number sign, etc …
Perhaps more opinion than anything else, it seems theres no real standard here. "Hashtag" is however the one true way.

I've never really had much experience with German aside from playing RS on the German servers for ahwile due to less people when they first came out :p

Apparently Greek is thought to be a grammatically perfect language by most linguists. It has like 8 tenses or something like that. Whether or not this is true I'm not sure but that's what a couple of linguistic majors at my uni have told me.

I'm bad at the GNU, anything with all caps I say each letter.. G.N.U. G.U.I. etc

one that I used to hear in Oregon a lot:
height vs heith.. hear a lot of people say "heith" as in "what is the heith of that building" instead of height -.-

not so much now, I live in a very well educated part of Colorado though, when I was in Oregon down in the south part I think it's still the drug baby capital of the world, lol..

Everything makes more sense than English O_O
The only reason I like English is because we literally make up words on the spot, for everything in existence.. there are lots of languages that don't have words for certain things.
IMO that makes it an amazing language… and naturally one of the difficult ones to learn… with all of our rule breaking

I think what appeals to me about German is how similar the grammatical structure of simple sentences is to English.

For example

English:
I have a green train

German:
Ich habe einen grünen Zug

That, and compound nouns :D

English:
Gloves

German:
Handschuhe

(Literally Hand-Shoes :D)

Let's rename the thread to "Why language X is stupid", then?

I'll begin:
The Norwegian language is stupid because we have 9 different ways of saying "I" as in "I am": "Jeg er", "Eg e", "Æ er", "I er" and so on (I don't know the rest, but there's a lot of them).
The Norwegian language is stupid because "married" and "poison" is the same exact word, just pronounced differently; "gift". "Jeg er gift" means either "I am poison" or "I am married".

Yes and yes.

Hmm, wikipedia has a standard pronunciation table thing, although it's confusing until you learn it(or just use it as a reference).

Whilst learning Japanese I constantly saw things that made more sense than in English, which is why I'm glad I'm a native English speaker. Japanese has standardized pronunciation, there's one way of pronouncing words. The only reason Japanese is one of the harder languages to learn is because they have 2k plus symbols.

Since I know many french natives I heard them speaking english. I must say this "th" thing is a problem of you french guys. :p Others don't seem to struggle with it that much. (Not even the germans)

Edit: I hate the Hungarian language because it is useless for learning or understandinh other languages.
I hate the German language because it has a lot of capital letters. Also it is not that smooth when you speak it.
I hate the French language because I was forced to learn it :p (now I am glad)
I love the English language because it the most efficient one I can speak.

And I HATE when english natives pronounce foreign words "english".
