Healthy sleep time?

Saw a thread in rs section about "reducing your sleep time" to play rs or something so I was wondering…

How many hours (straight) do you sleep?

Is there such thing as too much sleep?

I personally sleep way too much, 12-13hours. Not cause I want to but if I get up ealier, I'm like a zombie all day.

I get about 6 (week days) hours and about 8 (weekends) hours of sleep.

I know some people get only about 4 every night, but it doesn't cause any problems for them (hopefully I can obtain this secret [body mutation!?!] haha).

Side note: for some odd reason I remember @Wizzup?; in IRC saying that he gets max 7 hours per night.

^ Regarding the title question, too much sleep question, and general sleep information.

I tend to sleep once every 20+ hours, and usually not for long. Not for any reason, there's just someone always up at my house and so when I can sleep, someone tends to wake me up after not long. I always feel fine.

I tend to sleep for ridiculous amounts of time aswell, 12-16 hours in some cases, losing nearly a full day sucks, but I have OCD which causes insomina :(,

I find after sleeping for really long peroids of time I actually feel worse than if someone had forced me to get up, I remember reading somewhere that 8 hours a night is the optimal human sleep time, don't remember the reasons given in the study tho,

As far as i can see from all that I have read, other than drastically slowing your metabolism, sleeping alot will have no negative side effects on your health, but your brain may get used to it and you get the "zombie" feeling :p, goes both ways though, not getting enough sleep can be really bad for your body because several processes happen while you sleep that are essential and need time to do their thing, some people are exceptions to the normal and can live on a few hours a night just fine, lucky them I suppose ;)

I swear most of my day is wasted in sleep.
Used to have horrible insomnia. Out of the two, dunno which is worse. I do take medication that make me drowzy/sedated so it might be why I sleep so much.

I'm OCD a bit myself.

I work a lot so I can't really afford to sleep all that much. On weekdays I'l stay on skype till midnight say "im'a go to sleep now guys" Then stay there saying goodnight for 2 hours… so then it's 2am(sometimes 3). and I wakeup at 7:30.

On weekends I sleep from 2/3am - 11am (OR more.)

I work 9am-10pm most days

I sleep 4-6 hours and I'm usually awake 16-30 hours

Weekdays I get around 6.5 hours, although I'd like to increase that by an hour.

Weekends I get around 10 hours, although I'd like to decrease that by two hours, because that's four hours of wasted time every weekend.

I usually get 5 hours during the weekdays and like 7-9 on the weekends. During finals though sleep becomes scarce, get like 4 max

I usually sleep about 6½ - 7 hours straight on week days and around 8 hours straight on weekends. I'm usually not that tired unless I'm in school during a boring class or something (who's not tired then?).

Wow, Mabye I sleep too much then? Realised I don't get that much when I think about it. but hey us British are lazy ;)
I properly get 7-8 hours on a week days and weekends differ alot, but i'd say about 9 hours.

~6 hours/night weekdays (however that leaves me slightly zombified the first 5 or so hours I'm awake) and ~8-9 hours/night weekends.
On rare occasion I'll have a day that shoots up to 12 hours which usually cancels any possible zombification over the next few days.

I think I actually read in some research that the absolute optimal sleeping pattern for people was to sleep 2 hours at a time after ~7 hours of waking time. So it ends up being 3 sets of 2 hour long sleep sessions a day, evenly spread and following the circadian rhythm as opposed to the actual 24-hour day. The problem with that is things like school and work…

Normally around 6-7 on weekdays and the weekend averages about 8-9, going to school, work ect keeps me up sometimes. I feel best after about 7 hours of sleep, not tired but not over sleeping either. I've heard that waking up straight away without the snooze button will help you get up faster and with less of that "Zombie" feeling, because when you hit the snooze button your body goes back into the first stage of sleep, does not achieve REM sleep and then is groggy because it thinks that it should be in REM, where as you just wake up you feel more alert due to not going back into that first stage of sleep expecting more REM

Everywhere I've searched it says 8 hours is the optimal sleep time. Never have I heard in sets, and even if it were true, I doubt anyone would be able to do it that way.

Alternative sleep cycles

Interesting read.

^study claims anything under 6 hours of sleep significantly increases risk of a stroke even if you are fit and healthy.

Now which study do you trust is the most accurate?

I believe both studies are fairly accurate. The one by Warwick Universities (awesome school name) you mention relies on monophasic cycles however. In general the only negative aspect to Polyphasic sleep cycles is that most people don't use them in the modern world. However, even still, there are plenty of other studies that mention how the human body's natural rhythm ends up following a rhythm outside what we typically view as a "good night's sleep" by instead following several smaller sleep sessions throughout the day. And when following the recommended polyphasic cycles (especially Uberman's), I can't seem to find any situations that were unhealthy for any participant even after years of participation.

5-6 hours if I have work the next morning, 8-14 if I don't. I believe you can oversleep, but you probably won't see any side effects in the short term. With that said, everybody has their own amount of sleep they need per night - some people only need 5, some need 8, some might even need 10-12.
