I need a new computer as my current one is like 19 years old and i would really like to play some of those fancy new games like skyrim and what not and i doubt i'll overclock unless needed badly. My budget is around $1000 AUD and im thinking something like this:

case:
no idea

psu:
600w?

mobo:
no idea???

cpu:
intel core i5-3570

ram:
2 x 4gb should be more than enough

hdd:
no more than 500GB as i currently only use like 280gb space

ssd:
intel ssd-520 120GB?

gpu:
anything that is able to play graphic intensive games for atleast another 5 years

so post away!

For people who are wanting to look at prices for Australia, www.pccasegear.com have around the same price as most retail stores.

Case: Are you looking for a full tower size or a mid-tower size? I think selecting a case is a personal preference

PSU: 600W would be plenty, if you really want to future-proof your PC, maybe a 1000 watt but 600 is fine.

Mobo: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=138_711_1183&products_id=19868

CPU: That CPU is fine I believe

RAM: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=186_538_913&products_id=18373

HDD: I'm going to assume this hard drive is for storage - http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=210_344&products_id=15934 - I picked WD because that's just the brand I prefer.

SSD: I'm going to assume this SSD will be for OS + Common Applications? 120GB will be fine if its just for that. (Remember to optimize your OS for the SSD!)

GFX Card: I have a nVidia GTX 560ti (Got it last year), it's a good graphics card. Try looking at this one - http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=193_876&products_id=22458

Im sure @grats will also give you some suggestions\improve my listing.

I have purchased over $1,200 worth of hardware from PCCG, can vouch they are legit.

i need a case that will be big enough to maybe hold 3 hdd+ssds and one optical drive and also big enough so that it wont overheat, so whichever size that happens to be :S

and yes ill be using hdd for storage and ssd for OS+ commonly used apps

gfx card: are you sure that card will fit on that mobo seeing as how the card is like 20cms and the mobo is like 30cms

why do you need so much HDD space? you already have the 3 HDD's or something?

the new piledrivers from AMD out perform the 3570's in everything, are like $30 cheaper.. the only thing they under perform in is single threaded apps, and that is just extremely barely.. they're starting to do more and more tests and they're doing much better than the old cores, so I'd recommend that.. because as someone on this site, I assume you'll have simba running at least sometimes, with games and browsers and who knows what else.. but you'll actually be using the performance boost you acquire from the chips

oh I see

well case doesn't really matter, if you want a case with a lot of room, and fans that push some serious air / very quiet, I'd go with the nzxt phantom, there aren't really any cases out that compare

other than that, I recommend this build:
http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/Aeuf
fixed for australia

there is no optical drive and no hard drive selected, however I selected you a SSD.. it happens to be the best price per GB in australia and it is an SSD I'm familiar with, I have two of them from a really good sale here in USA (two of them for the same price yours is lol) anyway, they saturate SATA3 speeds so you won't have any problems there

rofl that motherboard goes to some suspended account thing.. gotta change it

fixed here:

australia sites suck, sorry you have to deal with them =[

how good is the linux compatibility of the amd build compared to the intel+nvidia one, since i plan on dual booting. and yeah tech pretty much sucks in aus :(

about the same, nvidia drivers are all closed source so probably worse on the newer ones vs amd
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYWzMvlj2RQ

because amd tries to help out linux community giving them some source for drivers and what not.. the cpu's shouldn't be much of a difference

you can go to an intel build, I don't have a preference.. I go for the bang for your buck I treat stuff like it all comes from the same company and just get the stuff that performs well (because there are plenty of companies that have shit products and really good ones)

if you want to switch to intel, you can edit the build I'd do 3570k and an asrock extreme3 1155 z77 board, those are the only things you'd need to switch.. I wouldn't go nvidia unless it's the 600 series, their power efficiency is non existent until the 600 series, and even then amd still smacking them around in performance

ok so heres what i have so far:
case: coolermaster stormtrooper

psu: antec 520w modular

mobo: undecided :(

cpu: i5 3570

gpu: powercolor radeon hd7850 : msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=8734

i heard this company isnt good and their cards overheat quickly, is anyone familiar with it?

ram: corsair xms 8gb

hdd: 500gb wd blue

ssd: kingston hyper x 120gb

the only other thing im having trouble deciding is with the motherboard, since there are like a 1000 of them, does anyone know of any working motherboard finders/selectors?
