Getting this error:

The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.

You can’t upgrade 64-bit Windows to a 32-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 64-bit version of the installation disc, or go online to see how to install Windows 7 and keep your files and settings.

32-bit Windows cannot be upgraded to a 64-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 32-bit version of the Windows installation disc.

I'm on a 64 bit system, and on the install disk I picked the 64 bit option.
This is dumb.

The setup disk is probably 32bit (otherwise if it's 64bit it wont be able to run on a 32bit system), so it can be used to do a clean installation of either 32 bit or 64 bit, or upgrading for 32bit, but not for 64 bit.
So i guess you'll have to do a clean installation :S

If the option is shown after it is told that you just want a upgrade, then the option is misleading.
For it to run on both 32 & 64 bit systems, it must be a 32-bit setup, which cannot be used for directly upgrading 64bit.

For upgrading 64bit system, you must get a disk that states that it can only be used for 64bit (which would mean that the setup is 64bit).

So you can only use a dual-compatible setup disk for clean installation of 64bit OS.
