I thought that they tested this on Mythbusters before and found that the amount of methane that would be able to be produced wouldn't be enough to sink a ship. I'm not sure about the plane thing, but I don't think enough could be produced either (over a wider area, maybe it could in just a really small area). I forgot exactly how they explained it on Mythbusters, so maybe someone else who remembers the episode could elaborate? :o
