So … I have been thinking about this for a while now and thought I would just post. It probably wont be well received but I thought it might be insightful anyway.
Just a little background … I have been playing RS for 7+ years and enjoy the game … RL has taken a brutal toll (wife + kids = exp waste) so I found Simba and everything it offered to be a welcome addition. It meant I could still "play" while being a dad and not pissing the wife off.
I also appreciate that most of the members here are all about community. I have spent countless hours reading threads, watching tutorials, learning, researching, and basically just enjoying everything villavu offers.
For me the real goal here isnt just to play RS but to contribute to the community however I can. I think it makes PERFECT sense to have a "free" section and a "member" section. I especially appreciate anti-leech measures in scripts since I think it shows real effort and dedication by players to learn simba/programming and know the members in this community are all about enjoying RS more.
My goal is to hopefully become a member (sooner rather than later :D) but given that I hardly have time to play if it wasnt for Simba, learning to script is a long LONG process. Although I think anyone CAN script I also think it takes some pretty special/gifted people to do it as efficiently and as effectively as some of the top contributors here.
For that reason I think there should also be alternative ways to gain the "member" status … not just by learning and submitting scripts (I am willing to do this and have already learned a lot but for me its brutal hard).
What I suppose I am trying to say here is that there are members of this community that arent "members" because the value they provide isnt on the scripting end. I think this negates the value these members can provide in terms of testing, debugging, troubleshooting, and contributing.
Its obviously much harder to measure … I dont think it can/should be tied to a "post count" or "date joined" … I believe + reps could be a contributing factor … but I think there could be an "honorary member" with the benefits of membership for those in the community that have demonstrated core villavu principles over time.
Thoughts?

We handpick outstanding users like jakee every now and then. And depending on your impact on the forum the requirements for you member app scripts are being determined. I think we already got this covered.

If any admin deems you fit, you'll be memberized. Why does it matter if you're a member or not? If you truly want to support Villavu, does it even really matter?

Ironic that this was posted just after 2 people were handpicked memberized by upper levels (granted Olly was a few weeks ago)
Yes be really active and contribute in other ways to the community and it may come :)

You feel ostracized if you're in a group but not in the 'in' group. Kinda the same reason people spend extra money to make something fancier, it's usefulness doesn't always go up, but people still love it. And in the case of members here at SRL you do get special privileged.

Ha! I didnt know that thanks masterBB … guess that pretty much puts my whole thread to bed :).

Good question and I saw xdarkshadowx post a reply … part of the reason I keep coming back to villavu (on pretty much a daily basis) is the community component. Other than the special access you get as a member its more a recognition that the time you spend with the community is appreciated by the community. masterBB and the rest of villavu are already all over this though so my idea is pretty much void. Which just goes to show how engaged the community is … love it.

Thanks Ashaman … your scripts are phenomenal and intimidating! I have read/watched almost all your stuff and its incredible.

SSRL+ Can recommend someone to be memberized and then it is put to a vote.
@digitalninja
It does happen, I was an administrator before releasing my first script. We do recognize that everyone has different skills to offer, but the requirement to apply to membership is a script. But that does not mean you cannot be automemberized, it does happen.
Also its nice to see someone else out in my neck of the world :)

I should get into the habit of commenting it up more :( It really isn't too bad once you play around with it a bit and edit other peoples scripts

Awesome!! I dont make it out that far very often (mostly just to hit up Cultus). Although I will be out there next week on business … and occasionally hit Abbotsford up. I live in not quite South Surrey but most people would think Surrey UK so I just opted for Vancouver.
I will also continue to work on my script … I want to use it anyway and think it would help the community … itll just take a while to figure everything out which I am ok with.

An active and respected community player plays a more important role in becoming an SRL Member than scripting ability, but I'm not speaking for everyone, this is merely in my own opinion. I do believe, however, it's quite fast to pick up scripting with Simba and rely mostly on your ability, when applying for membership. But if you're a regular here, you help out where you can, post positive content, and simply stay active then you'll gain attention from higher up really quick.
Having a solid coding ability, IMO, is just the icing on the cake.

Very true on the scripting end. Is easy to script, but only if you are relatively into the game and have time. Both are necessary. I now have none. But their is no difference between Mem+ and JR Mems other than name right?
At least not for those who do not play RS anymore? (I know about dose members+ sections and scripts ;))

It isn't often that something interesting occurs in the SRL Members section, anyway. It isn't like you are missing out on much.
See
this thread for information on how to become an SRL member, more specifically, the "attitude" section:
From: Me!!!!!!!!!!
Attitude is the deciding factor in an application, and if you have an incredible attitude and have been around for a while, you can often get in with a next-to-nothing script.

i voted honorary because i'm pretty sure there have been a few people that don't script that have members status. I'm pretty sure Greg is one of them…

Only people from like 2006.. tbh you should have to get in with a script, a lot of people are voting yes to honorary status are junior members/registered users that just don't want to learn to script and want access to SRL member scripts..

I don't know why everyone is always going on about 'SRL Members Scripts' we are really not hiding the holy grail back here. If that is your motivation for membership you may be sorely dissapointed.
SRL Members is a community rank and it awarded to those that contribute to the community through scripting knowledge and positive activity inside the forums. It is not a key to unlock the best of the best scripts, those are honestly kept private ;o

Well if you're still active with worth while and good posts and are trying to help people etc. i think it would be okay to give them member status. personally i didn't vote yes because i want to get members i don't really care when i have the time to learn to script well enough to be accpeted i guess i will be. until then i'm perfectly happy as a JR. Member. And i'm not saying they've been helpful for a month or two i'm saying over long periods of time i don't know maybe a year or two or something like that. i think that if the members thought you were a worthwhile asset to the community then it would be okay to give member stat.
