Getting fit

Hey guys,

So -Benny gave me a healthy list of things to do which I wanted to do to stop being depressed. I have now decided. IT IS THE NEW YEAR. So how am I going to do this? I can't motivate myself to ride a exercise bike without doing what I love doing most. Talking on the internet.

So. Should I buy an excercise bike and add a desk? or a treadmill? Think it'l work?

You really don't need a exercise bike. Just go out and get a bike and go ride. Feeling unmotivated to exercise is common with everyone, you just have to suck it up and do it. But once you do it for a few weeks and get good at it, you won't want to stop.

IMO you should go out and run/jog. You don't need anything to do it and it gives you the energy you need to get through the rest of the day.

If you really want to go out and buy a machine so you can use the internet at the same time, I'd go with the exercise bike because if you want the treadmill to run on, you'll be bouncing up and down too much to do anything.

I work 2 jobs so I usually come back late at night, Don't really want to be out late and too tired to come back ^^ Crashing in bed would be nice.

Once again it's time I work 2 jobs 9am-10pm most days :( So realistically I can't go to my local gym as its about 20 miles away

That's understandable. I myself would go with the treadmill. I've tried both (with a exercise bike, anyways) and feel like running gets you in all-around better health and shape. But like I said, running on the treadmill and using a computer at the same time will be difficult, so if you REALLY have to be on the computer at the same time, perhaps the exercise bike will be better for your situation.

My family has a treadmill so I'l go for the bike, modify it to have a table, at least that way I can watch a film, sit on the laptop etc and casually do it. If I want to push myself further I'l use the treadmill downstairs :)

I suggest the treadmill, works for me. I run about 2.5 miles a day. Going at it for about 3 weeks now. Started jump roping as well. To get healthy, I guess eat right? Drink tons of water, and do .5 hours of exercise minimum, a day.

Hope this helps.

I am planning on taking these pills called POLBAX that will supply me with all the necessary vitamins and minerals so I don't have to eat anything that can potentially make me gain weight. I drink a cup of coffee for breakfast that's it and for lunch I eat a low-sugar cereal bar without nuts. Sometimes I still go on an eating frenzy, but then I always make sure I don't digest it.

if there are any shows you love watching or anyhting really like you said talking on the internet i would recomend getting a treadmill rather than a bike. cuz with the bike theres a chance youll end up just sitting and not even realizing that you havent been pedaling. thats why i would recoment a treadmill.. cuz no matter what speed you put it at all your body is active. and with that you can always get a treadmill with a tv or put it infront of a tv or a place to dock your computer

Just because I'm serious about my weight-loss and always try my best to lose more and look more beautiful every day doesn't mean I'm crazy. There's a lot of people just like me and I've gotten in touch with others who are in a similar situation as I am because they are unhappy with their weight. For me this is more than losing weight - it's a lifestyle. I just can't be happy with myself until I reached my perfect weight below 41.3kg.
(If you're wondering where/how I got this figure…There's this website that takes your wrist measurements, height, body fat, age, gendre into account and gives you your perfect weight. I'm not going to name this website here, because it is very personal for me and should only be revealed to people who want to be slim and beautiful!)
Until then, I'm an overweight meatsack that has a lot of work to do when it comes to looking beautiful so if you have a problem with the way I live then keep it to yourself please - there's no need to insult me and call me crazy. If anything, I'm chubby, but you shouldn't call me that either because it's rude.

If you're planning on calculating my BMI - then you should know that this is a really inaccurate way to calculate your optimum weight and in most cases it gives extremely high results. Almost any BMI calculation will point you to an overweight value.

np, and yea, I'm far too lazy to actually workout, after like 30 seconds of lifting weights I'm like f this and go back to my computers

just in the past few years from doing this I've gone from being able to curl 25 pounds to being able to curl 50 pound weights with 1 arm.. so it's definitely doing a good workout

I wouldn't recommend starting at 10 if you got a few doorways, I started at 3 because it adds up fast as hell if you walk through a bunch of doorways, I add 1 every few months, might go to 11 here pretty soon

I reckon wack a table on the bike so you can message and just pedal casually whilst chatting on Skype.

I know it's hard to get into it but I reckon if you just do it once or twice you can get into it and it will really start to benefit you.

Remember it will hurt for about 1-2 weeks and then after that your body will adapt to it and you'll get much better and feel fitter

Mr[S]

2013-01-11 06:41:08

Yeah many people put off excersising for the first time because it hurts as your muscles are not shaped up for what you have just done, it's like anything you train your muscles/lungs to cope with what you are doing

Training your body IRL is much like training strength in RS.

You can consistently train every day for regular periods of time, and achieve results that way. This is like killing the guards outside Varrock and Falador, they can be killed relatively quickly, and you gain decent experience from them.
You might need some low level armour + food to efficiently train there.
IRL equivalent is casual training like swimming, running, rowing, cycling.

Another option is to go hard and train on big things for short amounts of time, and have breaks inbetween. This equates to something like Greater Demons.
It takes a lot of effort to kill, but the exp reward is pretty good. You also require high armour, and some decent food.
IRL equivalent of this is going to the gym, with the intent of gaining muscle mass and strength. As such, you have to get a gym membership and have to eat decent food to optimise results

Overall, these two methods are pretty good, and offer similiar results when your goal is to become healthier.

The third option is for the lazy person, who doesn't really want to bother with the difficult tasks. Perfect example is killing chickens. Sure you'll kill a lot of them, but the xp gains are very small. You dont require much armour at all, and food is not required.

IRL equivalent is grats :D
The bicycle under the desk thing is great, but it wont really give you that much benefit when compared to the two methods above.

Ideally, a combination of the high intensity and consistent training is best suited for getting fit.

I'm a level 3 qualified personal trainer and working as a self employed free lance pt/gym class instructor around the leeds, england area. I've got a client base of over one hundred paying members and counting. I do a spin class every tuesday, boxercise every wednesday and saturday/sunday alternating weekly I do a free outdoor fit program me and a friend made in the park, which probably has 30 people on it per day.

I probably write 8+ programs/diet plans per day. So I don't think adding another one on a particular day for you would make much difference.

If you're serious about getting fit/losing weight/building muscle, give me a pm and we'll sort something out for you completely free of course :)

Have you considered getting a standing desk? Even standing as opposed to sitting has a range of benefits beside expending more calories (such as improved glucose and triglyceride uptake from the blood). We all have custom made standing furniture at my work. It would also make it much easier to integrate an exercycle or treadmill into your setup (as your can slide them under your desk and your screen/keyboard will be at normal height).

Hear this all the time. Definitely not sustainable and not good for you. You are literally starving your body of all the essential macro and micro nutrients. As I said before, there is nothing better than a balanced diet and regular exercise.

Ian

2013-01-20 23:50:10

What are macro and micro nutrients?
The only thing in sweet tea besides tea is sugar. No non-diabetic is going to become ill from not getting enough sugar.

Although I'm curious, is sugar a macro nutrient or a micro nutrient?

15 handstand pushups if you can
15 wide muscle ups if you can (pull up all the way above bar)

As many pullups to burn out set

Do 4-8 sets

No protein shakes or supplements. If you do this workout 3-5 times per week and spend 1hr doing it, you will never need protein shakes or whut not to see gains

Only thing different about my diet is that I don't eat too much sugars, drink more water than soda and I stay away from burgers/fries.

To be honest, the best thing you could do is change your diet for now. I've been drinking only water, cut out sweet tea, for a week straight and I've lost 10 pounds just with that.

Diet can make a huge difference, I've been cutting out the last bit of sugar in my diet recently, I got rid of most of the unhealthy stuff two years ago when I quit drinking sugar (water only now) and eating fast food. Going to kick candy finally.

I have a pullup bar in my apartment leading to the bathroom, really good way to force yourself to get a workout consistently.

And cause this is totally hilarious, enjoy:

LOL?

What are macro and micro nutrients?
The only thing in sweet tea besides tea is sugar. No non-diabetic is going to become ill from not getting enough sugar.

Although I'm curious, is sugar a macro nutrient or a micro nutrient?

Macronutrients are nutrients that your body requires in large amounts (carbohydrates, protein, fat) whereas micronutrients are obviously the opposite, you require trace amounts of these nutrients (vitamins and minerals).

There are normally 3 categories of carbohydrate: monosaccharides (such as glucose and fructose) disaccharides (2 monosaccharides joined together, such as surcose), and polysaccharides (many joined together in a long chain, such as starch). Polysaccharides are sometimes referred to as 'complex' carbohydrates, whereas mono and disaccharides are 'simple'. Sugars are sometimes referred to as simple carbohydrates because because they are either mono or disaccharides. For example, surcose is table sugar (what you put in your tea) but many foods processed foods contain fructose (such as coca-cola). So sugar falls under macronutrients (hence why sugar is indented under carbohydrates on a food label).

True. Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram, nearly double that of protein and carbohydrate (which contain 4 calories per gram), and nearly as much as fat, the most energy dense nutrient at 9 kCal/g.

Haha, what I was referring to is water doesn't have many nutrients in it (macro or micro). Actually diet and physical activity are just as important as each other because they are both halves of the energy balance equation (i.e., energy in and energy out). Plus, diet doesn't develop your cardiorespiratory fitness, does it?

Ahh, good to hear. It just that sometimes people go on crazy fad diets hoping to lose weight (which the normally do in the short term) but it isn't healthy. For example, you will probably lose weight from a 'low carbohydrate diet' because 1g of CHO is stored with just under 3g of water, meaning of you will lose weight, but it will be water weight which you will unavoidably put back on.

The thing about the sweet tea is that it has sugar that your body doesn't need, just because you already get enough sugar from other food so the sweet tea is just extra.

I hope nobody plans on only drinking water and not eating, that's just foolish :p

Simplest way to look at it guys is to lose weight is to burn more calories than you consume.

Its not hard to lose weight, and you don't need a forum post to know how. We all know what foods are bad for us and we all know that being active burns calories. Saying that, I don't want people to start calorie counting. Its a bad road to go down. You're burning calories all the time even when you sleep, so don't think if you eat 500 calories of cake lets say on a particular day, you need to do 500 calories of work to not put on weight.

Try staying away from simple carbs. We all I assume know what carbs are? If not they're a type of compound found in foods that are very easy for your body to break down and use for energy. This comes with a price however, they're also very easy for your body to store as fats, and is the first type of compound your body will try to convert into fat for storage during down time. Simple carbs are even more simpler to store as fat. Simple carbs are things like sweets/chocolate/white plastic bread etc. Complex are things like rice, potatoes, corn, wholemeal bread etc. Also other veg such as green beans, spinach and brocolli contain complex carbs (less starch, more fibre)

Carbs are essential for your body for energy. If you find you're tired a lot of the time, carbs would most likely have something to do with it. Complex carbs should be about half of your intake in calories.

False. If you starve, you're losing weight and not getting fit.

I gain a lot of weight when I workout and "get fit" I'll lose some fat around my chest and it'll get tighter, but I'll gain weight.. that being said, I like to have a thin layer of fat everywhere, it's good for survival in the mountains

Fitness and weight loss could probably fall under the "health" category, yet they are separate, but not mutually exclusive. You can get fitter without losing any weight (i.e., an elite marathon runner training), and as you guys said, you can gain weight whilst getting fitter (i.e. body builder, muscular hypertrophy).

Well if your aim is to be underweight, you will lose weight. Not if you work out though.
In order to build muscle you need to eat more calories than you burn, and if you didn't you wouldn't make any progress.

For OP, I'd say stop wondering about it and just go to the gym, check some good program for beginners like SS or G6 and follow it.

Remember to eat and sleep, that's the most important part of lifting.

Not necessarily. Generally speaking:

Energy in > energy out = gain weight
Energy in < energy out = lose weight
Energy in = energy out = maintain weight

Energy in being food and fluid intake, and energy out being a composite of 3 things; physical activity (all bodily movement not just exercise), dietary induced thermogenesis (DIT - which is the energy your body uses to digest food and absorb the nutrients), and basal metabolic rate (BMR - which is the energy your body uses to maintain normal bodily functions, such as cell repair, breathing etc.)

However, psyno is correct, if you are building lean muscle then you do need to be in a calorific surplus. This is because if you eat just enough calories to maintain your weight, you will not grow (even with the training). However, as the calorific surplus you need to build muscle isn't actually that great, people often put on fat as well. This is why some people go through "bulking" and "cutting" phases when are training for hypertrophy (i.e., muscle growth).

Actually, the opposite is true. Refer to my above post about energy balance. All foods contain calories, albeit food with high fat will have more calories because fat is an energy dense nutrient (refer above post). The sum of all these calories is your energy intake. For example, say over the course of the day all the food you eat amounts to 400g carbohydrate, 150g protein, and 100g fat. Using the atwater factors mentioned above (i.e., CHO has 4 calories per gram, fat has 9), you would work out your total calories:

CHO: 400 x 4 = 1600 calories
Pro: 150 x 4 = 600 calories
Fat: 100 x 9 = 900 calories
______
Total 3100 calories

So your total energy intake is 3100 calories. If your total energy expenditure for this day (i.e., BMR, DIT, physical activity in above post) is less than 3100 calories, you would store that excess energy. Over a period of time this would lead to weight gain. It is a bit more complicated to calculate energy expenditure, but BMR accounts for approximately 70% of all calories eaten, DIT 10%, and PA 20%. This is getting a bit complex for the purpose of explanation, but just to complicate things, not all calories are equal and 1 calorie in doesn't mean 1 calorie out (i.e., your body may fail to absorb and utilise the entire calorie). Simply:

energy in > energy out = gain weight

It doesn't matter whether you have a high metabolism, or a slow metabolism, this still applies. You can think of your metabolism as your BMR + DIT; the energy that your body uses to maintain normal bodily functions. This is different for everyone and changes with age, weight, ethnicity, gender, the amount of physical activity you do, and even what you eat**. Basically, you expend a certain amount of calories over the course of the day to meet your bodies energy needs, any excess calories you haven't used will be stored.

** Interesting point I though I might add about eating patterns and metabolism. When you don't eat, your metabolism slows down as a physiological response (i.e., your body thinks there is a famine and it is being starved, so by doing this it is preserving energy). This is why many diets don't work.

grats

2013-01-27 14:45:11

Cool, didn't read though.. you'll have to come study me and the rest of my family tree.. along with millions of others on this planet who eat more than they burn, and don't gain weight.

The Mayor

2013-01-27 14:53:43

So by saying that I'm assuming the you know what your precise energy expenditure is, and how many calories you consume by weighing all your food. I'm assuming you stayed overnight at the lab to get your BMR tested through indirect calorimetry and walk around all day with a portable gas analysis machine to calculate your physical activity.

I don't think that you quite grasp the idea of 'burning energy'. You can sit around all the time not doing anything and still use a lot of calories (BMR etc.). So even though it seems like you are eating more than you are using, it is probably not the case.

To prove it to a friend, I consumed 10,000+ calories a day, for 3 months, gained no weight at all… he was in the same boat as you're in right now.

I don't sit on computers all day and burn that… my normal day is probably around 5k calories, I maybe burn that some days, definitely not all

I don't gain weight through eating, at all, because I eat constantly and not single big meals in the afternoon.. the only way I can gain weight is if I lift.. which I had to do when I was sick for a few months and lost 20 pounds of muscle about 3-4 years ago.
