Would it be possible to not let users post external links in their posts or signatures until they have been registered for > 1 week or something like that? It seems all of the spambots do this.

We do not ignore it.

Unfortunately our antiquated version of vB is quite inflexible. We are taking steps to further stop the spambot problem on the new forums.

No. We're starting from scratch. That means you'll have to get junior members all over again ;p

I don't know if you've done this but blocking proxies radically reduce spam bots. So does captcha functions in the register and maybe your first 10 posts or so.

Then there's of course projecthoneypot.org which goes a long way aswell.

The forums already block a ton of spam posts (According to Hobbit) - Only a few slip past all the filters.

Can we please have a cooling off period so when someone signs up they can only post in a newbie/non viewable to the rest of us forum so these automated spambots go there…..???

Spam bots are becoming more frequent because of the increased activity on these forums due to Old School Runescape. (And our reliability and forwardness, free scripts, and teaching mentality.)
