Being fat is considered sexy and desirable in some countries. I don't think the Mayans had that much food so fat people were considered to be fed well. Other than like now where there's an abundance of food (not in every country but the majority) then being skinny is more of a challenge.

I got some friends from Tonga, I guess you would consider them fat but they are those "strong" fat guys. Its just their culture.
