smartremote needs to communicate with the RS servers still.
Do you see the same amount of bandwidth when playing RS normally?

Try moving to SMART8 and see if that helps?

SMART8 seems to have solved the issue, I'm back down to regular rates again.
still not a clue what could have caused the usage spikes though

I suggest sticking with SMART8 for now then :)
