This is just plain horrible. I can't even imagine how the parents of the children are reacting. My thoughts go out to the families of the victims.

Only some. I feel bad for the ones that actually care/lost someone; but this one hit me good:

I saw in an interview right after the shooting, this Woman couldn't contact her kid in the school. Reporter asks her what's the first thing that came to her mind. Know what the woman said?

"Now is the time to renew our cellphone contracts.. *Chuckles*.."

Doesn't even ask if her kid was ok or not.. Nothing. Acts as if the cellphone/smartphone would save her kid. And the idiots in the background were agreeing with her about the cellphone crap. Even the reporter. It was on CNN.

First thought that came to my mind was "Americans". Really? Worst gunlaws and attitudes I have ever seen during a holiday shoot-out.

The shooter was 20 years old. His mother, was a teacher in the school.
Sources say he shot his mother, and took his own life as well.

As an American I take offense to this, just because someone does something evil with guns does not make them wrong or evil. This person could have just as easily found another weapon. The problem is with the person who committed the crime.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people.

Pardon my stereotyping. I've seen too many ignorant Americans and unhelpful ones here in Toronto.

That woman just hit a nerve though. I don't like cellphones as much I guess. Everytime I see someone, they're texting. It annoys me a bit so I guess when she mentioned that it flipped a switch.

Anyway, this I have to disagree with you on:

Guns don't kill people, people kill people.

I don't think so. I think you're giving guns to the wrong people. Even though people kill people using guns, you're only making it easier by arming them. It's a ton easier to fend off a guy with a knife than it is with a semi-automatic rifle.

That's the big difference. They'd have had a better chance of survival. American gun laws are absolutely the worst. Everyone has a gun. Your neighbours probably own guns.

Mr[S]

Your government needs to sort out its gun laws, terrible but it always happens in the states rarely ever happens in the UK yeah sure crime is still way high but we never ever get massacres buy weird soulless people who can grab a gun anywhere on the corner, you outlaw guns and tighten up your laws you will see this type of massacre fade over the years

Yea, lets all be like the uk were not even half the police have guns. yea ok that should work.Yea, lets say no guns, because criminals are going to completly follow that rule, I mean come on if the law sais that they can't have a gun then they are going to follow it right?

While you have a worthy point, you seem to miss that these people are criminals, creating a law will only stop honest people from owning guns, meaning that criminals are the only ones who own guns.

Your assumption is that more guns = more crime, I disagree with this. There is a bank in Texas which allows open-carry(of a weapon), to my knowledge it has never been robbed. Criminals are cowards.

Pardon my stereotyping. I've seen too many ignorant Americans and unhelpful ones here in Toronto.

Ignorance is prevalent, in American society and others.

USA have got to the point where if you enforce a law no one will listen, it's the point of no return because people have got so used to having a fire arm that it will still be seen acceptable for having one, unless you bang up so many people for having a gun you will see a change, however these crazy people take the easy way out of shooting themselves, you can't change that

Yet another gun debate. The simple fact is, this doesn't happen nearly as often in the rest of the developed world. The rest of the developed world doesn't have these loose laws surrounding firearms. Pretty straight forward connection I'd say.

There are some pretty screwed up American kids these days though, however if all guns are censored and boarders patrolled then illegal smuggling of firearms will drop, it's just up to their government to sort it out, they have enough money to enforce it

* A 1994 survey conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that Americans use guns to frighten away intruders who are breaking into their homes about 498,000 times per year.[20]

* A 1982 survey of male felons in 11 state prisons dispersed across the U.S. found:[21]
• 34% had been "scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim"

• 40% had decided not to commit a crime because they "knew or believed that the victim was carrying a gun"

• 69% personally knew other criminals who had been "scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim"[22]

loose laws surrounding firearms.

Please explain why our laws are loose? I hear a lot of discussion about American gun laws, and much criticism about them but I don't hear any specific problems with it.

That being said, see NKN's post:
Please, tell me more about how criminals follow laws.

The problem is that you've had this law while every other country never had it and you've ended up in the 'point of no return' while other countries have low gun related crimes and rarely ever massacres you have one every few months

He has a gun.. Like every other in his country. Of course he isn't going to see anything wrong with it.

To the guys that say no one follows the law. Blame your country. But here's what. When someone sets an example, everyone else follows.

Ever hear the story of the by-standers and the bully? You set a law, and enforce it strictly, eventually these massacres will die down.

That brings me to another topic. Kids in your country, think it's okay to suicide because they're bullied. Where I used to live, bullying was part of life. You learned to deal with the shit in the schoolyard, then you can deal with the problems of the future and outside world. In America, you can sue for literally anything from tea cups to dining dishes..

But meh.. Lets save that for another topic. I don't wanna spam Kyle's thread with gun laws and bullies. This thread is for the kids.

You guys can reply and I'll read as it is interesting. But I'll pay my respects and save this argument for another day.

US population: 314,936,000 [Wikipedia]
US Crime: 11,877,218
Crime/person: 0.0377

UK population: 62,262,000 [Wikipedia]
UK Crime: 6,523,706
Crime/person: 0.1047

Therefore the US has less crime than the UK, despite there being more guns per capita in the US. This is not for every developed country (feel free to add your own) but I believe it proves my point, less guns do not lead to less crime, in fact the opposite appears to be true.

EDIT:

Very well.

As a side note, I hate it when someone makes a large number of points before ending with "But, don't continue the debate" seems counter-intuitive.

These crimes are minor crimes like theft or burglary, they are not go crazy in a primary school and shoot dead little kids, every 2 months you see on Sky News "Breaking news - 20 kids shot dead in US massacre" it's not even a joke

I agree with you about the phones, the only difference here(Australia) is that they are always on Facebook. I personally would love to see Facebook go paid or be ripped down permanently, it might get us talking to other people around us again and I don't just mean parent family etc etc I mean random people you might meet at a store while in line or something.

We should really revise how our society and guns intermingle. Because these killings are getting way too frequent. Our founding fathers wrote the right to bear arms in a time where loading a gun took a minute and they were also pretty inacurate. I'm not saying to ban guns, but there is a reason why these massacres are so prevalent in our US and not other places. I mean this event, the Oregon shooting, Temple shooting, Aurora, etc, etc. Something has to change.

Sweden has looser gun laws then the US and does not have the masscres. When people hear about these they always want to point at our gun laws without looking at the facts.

That's because the country is mostly filled with it's own people, unlike other countries, it's a known fact that the more different type of people/races/religions you put into a location the more fights you will have

Very well, we could probably continue on ad infinitum on this topic tho :)

To the guys that say no one follows the law. Blame your country. But here's what. When someone sets an example, everyone else follows.

I could be wrong here, feel free to correct me, but if I declared I was getting rid of my guns, why would a criminal want to follow my behavior. Wouldn't that make a criminal more likely to attempt to burglarize my house?

That crime statistics you posted is an overall crime rate. Probably includes larceny/theft, and others alike.

Part of owning a gun is the protection it gives you, and the fear it should instill in a thief, I would say that having more guns has led to a lower crime rate in general in America.

A bunch of children who did nothing wrong just got shot, but you see no specific problems with it?

Sorry, what I meant to say is that I don't see any problems with the current gun law, of course I'm opposed to the mindless killing of children :P

think it's okay to suicide because they're bullied

:O I was unaware of this.

In America, you can sue for literally anything from tea cups to dining dishes..

I've never seen anyone get sued due to a fight in a shoolyard, and I've witnessed a few in my school.

Graph: http://www.justfacts.com/images/guncontrol/dc-full.png

* During the years in which the D.C. handgun ban and trigger lock law was in effect, the Washington, D.C. murder rate averaged 73% higher than it was at the outset of the law, while the U.S. murder rate averaged 11% lower.[37]

When people ban guns it seems to lead to more violent crime, not less.
