What do you consider?

Hi, I thought that I would take it upon myself to create a thread that looks at the topic of 'being a member of a community.' I admit, recently I saw discussion being placed upon a SRL Member application and it caught my attention. I wish to use that situation, a situation where I saw as comparing and contrasting differences of personal views and create a broader and more extensive topic to be discusses; 'being a member of a community.'

This seems like a controversial topic to many people amongst the forum, especially in regards to SRL Member applications. Granted almost everyone has unique information to state, in regards to their choices on SRL member applications (where this thread will hopefully allow one another to contrast their viewpoints on middle ground and w/o bias). However it need not only pertain to this community, but relating this instance to events outside of our community and to the vast communities throughout the world.

I don't intend any bias myself or any disrespect to others within our community, however I do wish to enrich myself, and hopefully others too, via discussing the topic 'being a member of a community.'

Overall my goal for this topic is to debate the differences between viewpoints and allow for relating/discussing differences between said ideas. Take this topic as you will, I state again I wish no foul intentions.

Cheers,
Lj

Edit:
To help convey my thoughts more clearly;

I view a person whom takes the time to study and learn how a community acts, in tandem with using advice, views, ideas, teachings from figures in that community, a person that indeed longs to be a part of that community (in as little or large ways).

Thanks for the PM Jingle,

I'm going to put forward my points here to avoid confusion :)

I feel somebody involved in the community is:

  • Contributes to all users of the board
  • Posts frequently, not top quality posts but not spam either
  • Is known. For example, I didn't even know who "War" was before his SRL APP

Obviously I agree they must have the appropriate scripting knowledge as well.

Mostly my point is that the community is like a family, I feel there are certain people on this board who I speak to regularly.
Some I speak to everyday, I.E. I speak to Steven everyday for about 6-7 hours.

Some things I think you need to be part of a community. Or better said, this community as each one is different.

I think that most people are looking at post count, activity and joindate. Let's say someone has made 100 posts but joined in February 2012 and has an activity bar of 60%. The activity is alright but 100 posts is not a lot for being registered for 10 months.

Some people decide to vote no purely based on those details, when those 100 posts could have been in the past 3 weeks and when the person hasn't made any posts in the first 9 months of being registered. I guess I'm turning to member applications too much now as this should be purely about being part of a community. But it would also be interesting to see different opinions about SRL Member Applications.

I personally barely look at someones activity/post count/joindate. It is a good indication but if you make one post a day for the whole year your activity bar would be at 40% even though you were active every day.

To be "part of the community" I would say you need to be active regularly and make some helpful posts. Even better would be to report things such as memory leaks, faulty procedures/functions, be at IRC, be at Skype, etc.

Coming back at the activity part, I don't think it's "fair" that four useless posts gets you 100% activity but one well thought post will get you around 40%. Perhaps it would be an idea to make activity based on the amount of words posted instead of the amount of posts.

Anyways, I jumped around some different topics a bit I hope it makes sense. In short I consider someone to be part of the community if he makes some ocassional useful posts. There are many examples of people that haven't made a lot of posts but are still contributing more. A good example would be CynicRus.

I am not "known" but does that mean I am not a part of the community? :)

Difference is you guys are quite old. The point I'm trying to make is recently we've had a flux of comers and goers.

  1. Join
  2. Write good script
  3. Get SRL
  4. Leave

all in the space of a month or two

Whats the point in having a rank like this if we let anyone who can script a little or release lots of scripts in a short amount of time if they will just leave after.

Hence why you vote off of attitude, and IRC is a very good indicator of an individuals attitude.

My voting style probably isn't one that is followed by a lot of other members.

I vote on a few things

1) Post count
2) Date of registration
3) Activity
4) Helpfulness
5) Commitment
6) Effort
7) Attitude

1) Yes I value a post count, no I don't want them to have 5k posts but I like to see a range of 100-350; more the better but sometimes that just results from a spammer.
The reason I like post count is because it leaves pieces of their attitude everywhere (Will get on that bit later) I also like it because it allows me to peer into their soul (>.> …)

2) Date of Registration, very rarely do I ever vote yes if they have not been with the community for at least a month. If they have not been here for a month what is to say they actually want to be here, not just see the few scripts we have in the SRL members section.. then split forever. When you put a month of your life into something chances are you will stick with it for a ride.

3) Again with activity, being active is key! This just speaks volumes about the person, to have been here for a month+ and to have stayed active during that time.. tells me they are dedicated.

4) Helpfulness; honestly when I see this. I am about 50% convinced right there and then they should become members. I love when I see the help forums and I see their name helping a bunch of people or even asking for help (But mostly helping people ;p)

5) Commitment; yes being committed to something you start. I like to see that, I am not the best person to say that but I like to see it in others >.<

6) Effort; are they actually trying or just pulling a fast one. If I see them asking for help, or anything worth noting I will note it. If they don't and are just posting half worked on/fully copied work then no I would not approve.

7) Attitude; are they actually a benefit to SRL? Is there attitude something I like, or is it their biggest flaw.. are they cocky, arrogant, and ignorant? or are they willing to learn, positive, and engaging? I don't really care if they are the smartest person that has ever applied for SRL members, if they would be more of a liability to the community then it just isn't worth it. For example Powerbot, some of those script writers are very smart but some of them are crazy immature.

This is exactly what I look for in Member applications. Well-said, [XoL], my outlook on the matter is the same.

I don't really check a person's posts when I vote, because if they are so immature that any posts they have made would tip the scales, it would probably be apparent in their application to begin with. (Not to downplay XoL/others, you have really great application-response posts and your effort is obviously appreciated)

However on a different note, what is with the big deal on being scared of a user getting members and leaving? So what? Loads of people leave and come back and leave again then return once more! I am one of those people for sure!

I think that aspect in regards to applications is over emphasized. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you are not sure what to vote, look at what your mods/admins are voting, hold their opinion in high regard (you don't have to obviously but I would suggest it).
