New Laptop?

So being the intelligent being that I am, this morning I tripped over my laptop power cord, pulling it off my bed and dropping a meter on to my floor. I picked it up and tried to turn it on. Nothing. So I took out the hard drive. It make a clinking sound, which isn't good. I swapped it out for a spare hd, still won't boot. So I think it's time for a new laptop, this 9ne was from '03 anyway. What is a good laptop to get in the 400 - 700 price range? I looked around on newegg, can't decide on one though. Any help?

First off on the old one. Can you plug the drive into an external enclosure and load information? When you press the power button, does the screen light at all, can you see any bios stuff?

I have had good luck with the lenovo thinkpads, but depending on what you need can depend on what you should get. I am typing this on my old Lenovo T61p, which is a few years old now but does everything I need it to, plus they have a refurbed one for $ 229 USD.

Nothing on the screen, and no sound comes out of the laptop at all, not even the fan turns on. When I charge it the charge light goes on, but that's the most that I can get it to do. I tried connecting the hard drive to an external connection connector but It didn't recognize that the hard drive was there. And when I shake it, I can here the disk rattling like it is in multiple pieces.

As for a new one, I'm looking through the refurbished ones now. I might wait until after Christmas in case I get one (probably not :p)

The HDD won't have anything to do with the laptop not starting up. The most it will do if you don't have a HDD inserted is tell you it can't find a OS to boot from. When you plug the AC adapter in, will it turn on? If not you could have screwed up something on the motherboard.. no telling what.

The on light turns on but nothing else does. No noise whatsoever.

Sounds like you're screwed then. Btw what do you do on your laptop? Gaming, word processing, internet browse, etc.

It had 512mb of ram, so just internet browsing, word processing, scripting, and occasionally gimp. Might do more if I get a better one though :p
I use my beast desktop for gaming :)

If you're not going to be gaming on it you probably don't need a $700 laptop, I think a 400$ one would be good.

I chose that one because you don't need an insane amount of ram and CPU speed for what you need - a dual core and 4gb ram would probably suffice. If you're looking for something more powerful CPU and ram wise then maybe something like this:

That has a quad-core processor and 6gb ram (probably all you'll ever need for what you're doing). It will probably be able to play RuneScape on HD really well and maybe some other games like CS:S.

Definitely get a second opinion though. But like I said, there are so many laptops available, there most likely isn't a "best" one.

The 229 would do all of that without issue. If you wanted a small computer with insane battery, you might consider getting a netbook…

Battery isn't a huge issue, and the only netbook I've ever tried was an Asus eeepc. It was so annoying, the trackpad kept trying to do a multi touch when I had only one finger on the pad. Plus it was just slow enough to introduce a tiny bit of lag to everything. Maybe that was just a bad one though :D
