Probably going to get an SSD around Black Friday/Cyber Monday time.
For non USA people:

Can you guys link me to benchmarks comparing various SSDs so I can see which score the best.

Also besides benchmark scores, what are other ways to compare and see which SSDs are the best? What specs should I be looking out for?

Not sure what size to get either, I'm thinking 128GB should be plenty for me though.

I'm using crucial v4 128 gb in my new build, heres a link to its pcpartpicker profile. Great price :)

Intel 520.
Great Speeds, Same Sandforce controller as most of the top-tier SSDs on the market right now. Plus, it's Intel - nuff said

I have a Crucial M4 64GB in my PC. It speeds your PC up a lot especially now in combination with windows 8. It is faster and you have more memory left (~40GB vs ~30 GB with windows 7).

I install all programs < 250 mb or so on the SSD and big programs go on my HDD. If you plan on installing everything on a SSD even 128GB will fill rather quickly. I have a Crucial M4 256GB in my laptop which is more than enough storage for university, programs, etc.

I suggest going with a 256GB, I got mine for €185 (64GB 1,5 yrs ago for 110€) so I guess that's like 200$ so with Black Friday like 160$? Good investment.

I've had hard time trying to find laptops with 256gb ssd (not mac). Is it easy to install ssd on a laptop with hdd?

I have a samsung 830 128gb SSD and I'm very happy with it. Whichever SSD you'll choose, their speeds won't make a difference in everyday computer use/gaming whatsoever so I suggest you look for reliability.

Take a look at this: http://www.overclock.net/t/1179518/seans-ssd-buyers-guide-information-thread

This covers almost everything you want to know.

Edit: BTW, everyone who thinks about getting an SSD, get one! It's definitely the best upgrade you can get.

Plextor m3 128gb.
The new plextor m5 (out from august) is claimed to be one of the fastest for gaming purposes.

I've recently got an OCZ vertex 4 128gb. I have to say its amazing! It's made such a difference to my operating speeds. I would definitely recommend this product. Think ill probably get another one soon.

Could always try RamDisks like KingKong posted the other day here.

Instead of SSD 250 Mb/s read & 100 Mb/s write,
Go with -> RamDisk 7.1 Gb/s read & up to 9.5 Gb/s write.

Easily takes my 'best' vote

You'll probably want a samsung 840 or so.. it saturates Sata3 read speeds and is ok on write (who writes stuff?)

TLC will probably go mainstream after the tests done to it are done, something like 300TB of data until it starts to even show degradation, which is why MLC was only used and SLC was so 'top tier' until now, I think people realize we've come such a long way since the 80's that SLC really isn't that needed

don't get an intel SSD unless it's an intel controller, there's no reason to overpay for nothing special.

intel controller > sandforce controller > samsung is not bad.. rest are shit

Had a look at the RAM disk method. Looks very cool. Think it lacks the capacity required by most users, but wold be amazing for small scale storage to make programs run super fast.

ram as disk cache is a much better method imo, similar to how linux buffers everything read from your hard drive, in case you view it again..

everything that is running on your machine, runs from pretty much ram only, so unless you need really extreme insanely fast startup / load speeds, an SSD is more than enough for pretty much everything

7 month old review;
http://www.storagereview.com/intel_ssd_330_review
^ quotes $265 retail for the 180g SSD; so 90 seems like a good deal for the short longevity SSDs have in market compared to hard drives

My flip side / concern = review indeed points out how it's a slower SSD

Overall it is a nice cheap intel (I tend to like most everything intel) SSD and I'd probably get this for my operating system drive over a 2TB hard drive.

Cheers,
Lj

I remember reading somewhere that its important to look at the 4K random reads/writes of a drive, because thats what most 'average user' or 'everyday' reads and writes consist of… unless you are repeatidly transferring gigs of data around :s
