Rereleasing fixed scripts

I've found a few decent scripts in outdated/broken section that i've fixed and whose creators are inactive. I would rerelease them but, in the rules it says "Do not post any scripts that you have not written yourself on any forum unless given permission from the original author; this includes edited or modified scripts. Doing so is theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated here."

Is their any sort of public domain exception for abandoned/broken scripts?

Yeah and make sure to give due credit! I'm sure exceptions can be made for users that don't login at all

What about banned users? I was thinking about reviving Joe's Giants…
Might just start fresh though…

The most recent login for any of the owners is more than 4 months ago. Also what about adding anti-leech a couple of the scripts are kind of goldfarm-ish

there is probably a way to rerelease scripts whose authors don't come online. you could try pm'ing an admin they'll be able to tell you exactly what to do.

Very iffy topic. I would say mail the user. Wait for a week. If no reply by that time, then you can bother one of the admins/mods. Probably not a good Idea to really take up their time if you haven't exhausted all options.

IMO, you could probably get away with just making the script and in the thread, in big bold letters say these/this are/is (a) revival(s) of …'s script(s).
Then also give credit in the script as well.

Hope this helps!

Which scripts? If you don't mind me asking that is.. ;)

I would just post in the original thread and say you fixed it, assuming it works… And if it's 1337 enough maybe a mod will take it out of the broken section :p

To email him, go to his Profile Page, click on Contact info, then Email.
This option is open for most, if not all, members here.

Sent off an email, no clue if he'll reply though..

Just ask the original author. If the original author doesn't respond and didn't say explicitly the script can not be fixed/reproduced by others in public, then I guess you're out of luck. Otherwise I'd say you have implicit permission.
Of course credit the author properly. For example, if I fixed a script by changing a few coordinates it wouldn't be fair to call it "Markus and Wizzup? superscript" for example. Extensive rewrites of core parts are a bit different though.
tl;dr: get permission and it's ok. If you don't get a 'no permission' be reasonable.

Post in their thread….post a pm to their inbox…… no reply in a say 14 days I would say it is fine so lonf as you give credit to the original author for originally making it. Most especially with those authors who have not logged in for ages lol… Abandoned scripts in our public section that are not being updated by the original authors and where people who want to take the update them for the community are afraid to is not really the best way to proceed…

I would say the Admins need to make an official policy along this or similar guidelines… and perhaps "clean house" in the public sections (move them to a "I need to be updated" subfolder or something and let anyone who wants to take the time to update…

Official policy - as with most things here - is: if we don't get complaints we don't care :) We can set extremely specific guidelines and such, but using your own common sense is the best.
Outdated/broken is pretty much the same as your proposal of 'I need to be updated' so a seperate section isn't really necessary.

Reviving old scripts is pretty fun! It's a good exercise of reading other people's scripts and you don't need to write the whole thing, just understand how it works :)

So would I make a new thread for the fixed one or just post the fixed version in the original thread and request it be moved?

Unless you could get an admin to edit the original thread so the fixed version shows up on the first page(on or or below the op). I would create a new thread and link it to the old thread.

Hmm…

Makes me think if I should re-release Star's Powerskills.

Hey Wyn, your back!!
I haven't seen you in ages :p

Also, um…what is Star's Powerskills?

litoris

You could just post it in the thread in Simba tags? I think I did that with someone's WC script once.

Markus

I'd recommend you create a new thread if the script is old enough. Makes it easier to distinguish between 'official' fixes and semi-official third-party scripter-isn't-around releases.
