(Votes are public, and multiple answers. Please choose your top 2)

Right, So I want to buy a smartphone :) With AT&T

Right now, I am living in the US, so I need one that you can get here. It has to be on At&t, with contract (can't afford unlocked).

So I narrowed my choices down to:

HTC one x+
Asus Padfone 2
LG Optimus G
Xperia TL
Iphone 5

So basically, I want you guys to help me decide. I only have $200 spared for this. Also, if you have another that might be better, or at the same level as any of these, please tell me.

Right, let the helping of me BEGIN! ;)

Lg optimus g looks cool, but I assume you chose these phones because they have similar specs. If not, choose the one with this formula:

(Specs ( x/10))/Price

Chose the one with the highest number.
Then buy the one you actually want :D

Hmm, nexus 4. But that is missing some thingies. Like LTE :P

The Note 2 or Nexus 4/galaxy s3

Because they're the best android phones out there atm. Big screens, excellent displays, great camera for the s3, the smart pen is interesting and looks like it has useful features, the nexus 4 will have the latest android version and since it's a nexus it will get the latest os updates.

Rezozo

2012-11-03 11:20:25

Yea, but the note 2 is 300 :(
Nexus 4 has no LTE, plus it is an s4, but I don't think an S4 pro

Get an s3 then if you want 4g badly ;). It's one of the best phones out there atm. Only complaint I would probably have about it is that since it's not a nexus, it wouldn't get the latest versions of android as soon as they come out. It's $199 too if I remember correctly. I'm on Verizon and have a galaxy nexus atm, so I'm just telling you what I would buy if I had my upgrade right now.

What do you guys prefer, S4 Pro processor vs Tegra 3 Processor.
If you guys choose S4 Pro, What about S4 Pro with 1.5g vs Tegra 3 with 1.7g

Ha! These posts always make me laugh. I'd 100% agree that, on paper, the iPhone doesn't look as good as the other phones. I would however also 100% agree to the statement that people don't ever complain about lag or instability on an iPhone. In the real world case, even using inferior hardware, iPhones still outperform the "souped up" Android phones. I go 2 days on one charge from my iPhone, whereas most of my friends with Android phones are always frantically turning off 3G and 4G so their phone batteries don't run out in 8 hours. Also, buddy, the pictures are stunning.

I voted for iPhone and Other. If you don't like iPhone, get the S3. It's a slick phone.

Rezozo

2012-11-07 19:01:52

I think I can agree to that :p
But the reason I need an android is for the root access, flash and other great things only available on Android.
I know you could JailBreak the Iphone, but install a good number of things, and it does in fact, begin to lag.

Also why I need a 1.5ghz+ processor with at least 1gb ram :p

1. Why do you need to flash your own kernel?
2. Why do you need a 1.5 GHz processor?

I bought the Samsung Galaxy S2 (I9100, not 9100G or T) after weeks of research, and it has to be the best phone, quality-price wise. It runs all my apps smoothly (including pretty demanding 3D Games), and after buying the more powerful battery, it's just perfect.

I flashed CM9 stable on it, which was a piece of cake with the flashing features provided with the phone (didn't even have to use a computer!).

I could have bought the SGS3 but it's overkill for what apps demand nowadays, and far too expensive. So I decided to get the SGS2 as its much cheaper (280€ less) and will probably buy the SGS4 if there is one and the SGS2 starts to feel a bit old (although I doubt that will happen).

Additionally, with the knowledge, you can customize and do just about anything with Android.

Another phone to consider would be the Lumia 920 :).

Oh and my mate bought the iPhone 5 and regrets doing so. He had the iPhone 4 and was one of these so-called Apple fanatics. He was let down by the very little changes and said he'll definately go for Galaxy S or Nexus next time :p.

Well, I meant Adobe Flash ;)
And 1.5ghz processor because it allows you to put a tremendous amount of work on your phone without it having any issues speed wise. The ram comes in to help manage the apps, memory and battery. :)

So you're going to run on ICS just to get flash? This is what is wrong with the Android community. Arguably, Jelly Bean is what made Android as good as iOS. Pretty much everything pre Jelly Bean sucked.

I didn't respond to that line because it was basically a straw man argument. I didn't see anywhere in the thread where you had hinted at getting a One X, only the note 2.

That could just be a difference of opinion. I've been using Android since Froyo. Everything up to Jelly Bean was a nice update on the last version but still overall sucked. With Jelly Bean you've got google now, project butter, things that really upped Android in my opinion.

Ah, well that is truly my mistake. I apologize. Regardless of the fact that the One X supports flash on 4.1, Adobe has killed flash for mobile meaning it won't get any more updates and it will, probably sooner rather than later, get too outdated to run any flash media.

What's wrong with a dual core? Quad cores eat right through a mobile device's battery. You wouldn't know it from how responsive they are, but every Windows Phone device before now had single core processors, and that is because Windows Phone is very much an optimized, fluid experience. Numbers aren't everything, and a 1.5GHz Snapdragon dual core isn't something to scoff at.

I'm perfectly happy with my chinese-brand cellphone. Only a 1GHz processor and 1GB RAM running Android ICS (rooted). It's quite fast and I've never had any trouble. It cost me around $135 USD with free shipping. Dual sim cards, 8MP camera, GPS, all the good stuff. I wasn't planning on keeping it for long but I see no reason to upgrade to a dual-core processor; this one works great.

You're throwing out all these metrics that are never going to affect you. When have you ever talked for 8 straight hours on 1 battery charge?

Some quick googling gives 10 hours of talk time for both the Nexus 4(purportedly) (based on this article) and the HTC One X+ (based on this article). Some quick math gives us that the Nexus and HTC both use 210mAh per hour of talk time. The iPhone uses only 180 meaning that overall, the iPhone is more power efficient for talking.

Rezozo

2012-11-09 21:44:47

^^^Do you really think that? The fact that it has such a small battery power/charge thingy means it lasts less…thats it :p.
8 hours vs 10 hours…Hmm

Also, its not about talking for 8 hours, though I might ;), its about knowing when I would ever have to put the phone in charging, knowing that it would either last me the whole day, or only half a day, and forced to charge twice.

PS: Its not just talking…Its about talking, gaming, regular apps, movies, music etc. They all use a ton of power.

Edit: After 'googling': Nexus 4 has 15.3 hours of talk time, HTC one x+ goes up to even 17.7h.
I don't know where you got your info from…

App market is fine. >100,000 apps, and there has been an uptick in releases due to the release of Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8. The Windows Phone 8 market has the 46 of the top 50 apps available on any platform, so it's unlikely you will be missing anything. Right guys! A final update. I BOUGHT MY PHONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I bought the LG Optimus G, mainly cause of the price ($100 with contract, on sale). It has an 8MP Camera, 2gb Ram, S4 Pro processor. Just check it out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1921

Looks a nice phone and a good deal. I've been drawn in by the galaxy note 2 so would have suggested that. But good choice. Once you've used it for a bit, you should give a short review on this thread (might help others).

I think I will, thanks! It is an amazing phone, don't regret buying it. That's the main point. Still love the Note 2 though :D

I would too. But how can a regular student afford to pay $300 with contract, for a phone… :(
