So I do not have much experience here with external monitors and would like a few opinions on different cables, prices, quality of cables, and a small guide on setup. I would prefere some kind of "VGA Port Adaptor"(I.E a box that has multiple VGA connecters) or somewhere along the lines to have less cables attached to the laptop, or cluttered around. The laptop I will be getting soon is a " Lenovo Y480 " it has 1 VGA + 1 HDMI port, 3 USB 3.0 ports 1 USB 2.0 ports(Not sure if the USB ports matter or if there are any USB|VGA adaptor ports etc.).
You can find more specs on it here if you need.

Did you check if the laptops graphics card can output to both simultaneously? I think I remember trying to hook my laptop up to my tv with hdmi, and to another monitor with vga and I couldn't get it to run both at the same time. I probably just have a terrible graphics card however.

im pretty sure the os handles that aspect of it? i mean even the Intel HD graphics work fine on 2 screens
Are you planning on just connecting the one or add more?

How would you check this? It has a Intel HD 4000 graphics and a NVIDIA GeForceĀ® GT 650M LE Graphics cards aswell as 2 port outputs(VGA + HDMI).

I was planning on 2 external monitors and the laptop monitor so 3 screens all together which each screen being its own display. Example > dragging separate windows onto each screen.

Alright thanks in the OP I was also looking for cable choices etc, is there even any difference in certain cables it looks like they all have a different output. Does this affect graphics etc? Or can I just go with cheap cables from eBay?
Hate it when they put the VGA that close to the LAN thingy, it looks like your trying to make a workstation type thing? i would defo utilize the HDMI. and forget about the VGA. reason being that your VGA socket will get in the way of your LAN socket, so you'd have to pretty much sacrifice one for the other unless you can get a VGA wire that doesnt have the 2 screws on either side. your laptop should be perfectly fine in running 2 external displays, im presuming your gonna be plugged in most of the time too?
Edit : just read a couple things up, you could buy a standard VGA wire and saw the ends of lmao that way you could get 2 monitors in at once

To the power source yes also the VGA connector on the laptop doesn't have the two pin sockets. If I were to use HDMI connector on the laptop how would I connect two monitors to the one socket? Are there some sort of split cables or adaptor ports for this? I can't find any info on this besides a $350.00 piece of equipment for 2-4 VGA ports and thats well out of my price range.

hm idno if the splitter would work i dont know if it'll be sending just one signal down the wire or both, id say connect one monitor via HDMI and the other option would be to get a VGA wire and saw both screws off and use that or get a USB to VGA converter.

Sorry but you can't just get a splitter and run 2 separate screens off of it, you could potentially (don't know for sure) get a splitter and have the same display repeated.
My Suggestion: Get a hdmi cord off of ebay (either hdmi or hdmi to DVI whatever your monitor needs [hdmi and dvi are intercompatible]) and a vga cord off of ebay as well. You DO NOT need to spend $80 at futureshop for a hdmi cord, there is 0 difference between them and ebay cords.
