Windows 8

I had a hard time picking a section to post this in, but I decided on this.

Has anyone tried Windows 8? How do you like it?

Personally, I hated it before I even used it but I gave it a chance and bought it today. It seems pretty stable and really fluid - and uses less resources than Win7, the Metro interface is the only thing I don't like about it - but it does look pretty.

Thoughts?

its designed for a Touchscreen interface, so unless you have a touchscreen monitor, i would go for Linux Redhat: the most stable OS eva discounting Kernel :)

Not really related to the question, but I heard that the only reason they have released windows 8 at such a low price compared to previous versions of windows is because Apple started earning more profit than Microsoft.

Have at VM, looks VERY complicated at first look, hard to find easy things.. but after all not so bad. And they are designed not only for touch screen as someone said, M$ just look into that as well

Windows 8 is WWAAYYYY better than 7.

It's released as a low price only for the release. Apparently after a month or two, it'll cost the same as when windows 7 was released.

Windows 7 and Windows 8 are pretty stable systems. And yes, its designed for a touch screen but its still very usable with a mouse. Once you get used to it, its okay.

Same here, its quick and looks nice.

I'm using a 7200 RPM HDD and can boot to the login screen within 15 seconds, including the bios delay.

I bought the upgrade version for $15. Funny enough, I did a clean install with the upgrade version without any prior Windows installed - no need to spend 100$ on the system builder edition it seems like.

I used an upgrade for windows 7 aswell. First I installed it as a new version and then I installed it again as an upgrade :garfield:

My father just installed windows 8 so I've just used it for the first time. I've been looking at Windows 8 tablets for quite a long time so I knew quite a lot about Windows 8 already.

I like it so far although it is clear that windows 8 is (even) better when using it on a touchscreen.

I'm downloading it now. Hopefully I like it. xD Waiting for a student version before I buy it. Unless it's as cheap as it's gonna get now.

Seems good for a tablet/touch screen device.
Not worth the upgrade from 7 IMO for a normal laptop/desktop.
If you want to try it there may be websites in which you may be able to download it :D

You're just going to have to try it yourself. I use it because its faster than 7.

I'm actually finding it a bit slower. Could just be the fact I need a new pc though, it's faster for everything but file browsing.

I just brought the new Surface tablet and have to say, Windows RT (Tablet verison of windows 8) runs well. Now imagine Windows 8 on the Surface…It's going to be even better…

On my PC it runs a lot faster than 7, it also uses 300-400Mb less RAM. (sometimes a bit more)

i7-3770k CPU
8gb 1600MHz ram
GTX 670 SC 4gb
2 TB 7200 RPM HDD

Maybe you just need a new PC, or a new HDD.

Edit: Also, I believe I read somewhere that Windows 8 is the first version of windows that uses hardware acceleration for the interface.

How did you get other browsers when you couldn't launch Internet Explorer to download them?

You running XP or 7? If you're running 7, there isn't a significant reason to upgrade other than performance increases (IMO). If you're running XP, get your ass to it.

I hate the fact that they removed the start button, so I installed Classic Shell.

So far so good. It's pretty similar to windows 7 once you install a Start button.

I had them before I installed Windows 8.
