The temporary closing of MSI

As most of you have noticed, there hasn't been any active development done toward MSI in quite some time. This is due partly to the lack of interest from the community (no offense indented), but mostly due to us (the MSI developers) being too busy with real life.

There has been a lot of discussion about this and we've only just recently come to a conclusion. We've decided to close the MSI forums and stop development on this version. Here's some reason why:
  • MSI has become huge, and as a result, very difficult to maintain. It requires a lot of time that we simply don't have.
  • There are so many scripts in MSI, we don't want people to not make their own just because it's already in MSI.
  • There are plenty of scripts in the scripts section that do the same thing (a lot probably do it better) as MSI.

This isn't the end of MSI, however. We are just going to head in a new direction. Here are our plans:
  • Completely downsize MSI - remove scripts, features, and skills so there's a decent set of "default" scripts for Simba/SRL.
  • Ship MSI alongside SRL, saved in Simba/Scripts, rather than Simba/Includes.
  • Completely converted to Lape and SRL-6.

I think this is both a good and bad time for MSI. No, it won't go as far as we originally planned, but it will still be a good script for people to use. It was also be the first script released in SRL-6 and Lape.

Cheers,
The MSI Team

E: The development of "MSI downsized" will be slow as it will be converted to Lape and SRL6. The end goal is for MSI to be re-released alongside SRL6. If you would like to follow the progress of MSI Downsized, you can find the repository here.

This sounds like a really good direction for MSI to head IMO. Look forward to checking it out once release in Lape with SRL-6 :)

This might also stem some of the flow of "Y MSI NO WALK??" threads.

Nice to see this done, Remove it and revamp instead of watching it die.

Good choice downsizing it, that will make it higher quality and easier to maintain. Seems like the only things posted recently regarding MSI were bugs :/

It is a bit sad, but like ollybest said, it's better than watching it die. Especially for new users of simba, many are confused about why SRL's amazing project has errors that they have no idea of how to fix. Imagine when you guys first started botting and how the video on youtube showed how to use MSI but when you tried it, it just gave you errors. It would be frustrating, and may have caused some to leave. I think this is best for MSI, and maybe in the future we can slowly build it up again.

Hopefully this decision is for the best. If you guys are down with it, then I support you 100%!

This is nice to hear. I think you could keep all features that don't depend on a location, ie powermining/fishing/cutting, alching
And then you could keep some easier to maintain spots, like cutting maples at seers bank(because it's right next to the bank), yews at edgeville/ge, soft clay/vials at ge. Using custom SPS maps or DDTM's for those locations could make them more stable.
You could remove everything else with long paths.(Though I really liked the runecrafters, but nobody crafts f2p runes anymore because of runespan…)

I haven't looked into SRL 6, is it planned for release with lape?

Didn't we also agree to migrate a lot of the useful function into SRL 6?

Anyway, I think this will also help get people into learning to dev MSI as well. Since it will be a smaller code base, it won't be as confusing.

Sort of the opposite actually. SmartColors will soon be prevalent. ;)

It was talked about yeah, and I think there's still a few functions that can be merged, but the bigger "systems" like object finding are too customized for MSI.

Yes, but that's all I'm going to say about SRL 6. ;)

I think it's a definitely a good idea.
I tried to have a look at the walking to see what was wrong but I got so confused lol.
I would for sure love to help out in the revamp, in any way I can.

Heh, I thinks there's still an array bug in there, lordSaturn found it.

Saddens me to see MSI go, but oh well, may its future be brighter!
(I actually wanted an icon of someone drinking a pint but we don't have that)

I'm glad to see how much good came out of MSI both in terms of product, people and script-use. Perhaps a possible way to go in the future would be more focused small MSIs. By this I just mean more people engaging in team work. Smaller chunks will make it a lot more manageable;

I think one of the things where MSI could have gone further would've been in implementing Blacklists, SmartColors, Smart banking systems, Skill combination. It excelled in terms of locations and skills available and was one really massive, awesome script. It might have been too standardised due to its size and was perhaps missing those special personal touches that we include in our own scripts. (I say this with hopes of a brighter future for team scripting, hoping I am not being unfair towards anyone)

Just putting the idea out there, but seeing an f2p Mine, Smelt, Craft, Bank anywhere would be awesome. As an afterthought, a script research section, or seeing more research in the R&D forums would be quite beneficial, as people find the small things that make the whole difference in a script, or develop an interesting technique which could be shared and improved upon. By this I mean explaining the idea behind the function, how it works and how you came to think of it - Somewhat like what you'd see in SRL's docs but more detailed and shared earlier on, not seen as some annoying text you have to write afterwards (which is how I used to see it)

From the plan I saw from Coh3n, SmartColors is a go. Also, reducing the code size and what it actually does is a must. It's going to be downsized, but it will work much more efficiently and will be a lot easier to maintain and update.

Personally id like to see MSI just use F2P Methods, its simple, and everyone can work on it without a members account.

We're not going to focus on either F2P or P2P support, but I can say the skill locations are going to be primarily F2P (like they are now).

@RM, I'm really proud at how far MSI got and I don't regret anything! I think we'll learn from this and maybe one day, it will reach your initial goal. :)

That was the plan, yes. That being said, SPS won't work with SRL6 (unless object support is added to Lape soon), so I'm not sure. Right now I'm just working on downsizing. For the most part, the conversion to Lape/SRL6 will be done later.

where TForm is a static class.

Other functions can be exported.

What masterBB said. TMufasaBitmap is a class in Simba and as you know, SPS uses TMufasaBitmaps.

I'm not sure if it can be converted to use bitmaps instead, however.

This thread would have saved me some very unnecessary expletives when I drifted back to SRL (and Runescape by extension)… I could not get why the script would not work, and now I know. In any event I can't wait to see the re-vamp.

My apologies. I'm going to add a warning message for users trying to run MSI and refer them to this thread.

Why not just dump MSI altogether? It'd kill off some leechers and strengthen the community (via community scripts) as far as I'm concerned.

We considered that, actually, but we still want to provide users with "default" scripts. By that I mean scripts they don't have to download. Simply setup Simba and you're ready to go. Maybe that encourages leechers, but with the downgrade, all they would be getting is simple woodcutters and fishers; nothing advanced. For that, they would need to join and contribute to the community.

Not to mention MSI is supposed to be a community project. I think it got a little too complicated for most people to contribute, so the downsize should help with that as well.

Alright. Sounds good, the downsize I mean. I'd love to develop for MSI Downsized.

You should make a thread detailing what MSI-D (new acronym, yay!) has, what is being developed, and what needs done.

I plan too when some actual progress has been made. Like I said in the OP it will take some time since the idea is it will be released along side SRL-6.

Unfortunately, the "temporary" has drifted into a more permanent state. :(

I simply do not have the time to pick up the project back up again (at least right now). So for now, don't expect MSI to come back.
