Piracy

Now, as many of you guessed, I'm not talking Somali pirates. What I'm wondering is this: How long until there are laws in most countries that prohibit ISPs from connecting you to websites like the pirate bay, and any that continued to do so would be fined for "accessory to piracy", or something equally broad?

If you choose to argue that this will never happen, please say why.

On the other side of the spectrum, how long until piracy wins and the entertainment industry decides it is no longer worth their time to produce movies, tv shows, music, ect?

Again, if you disagree please say why.

Any other thoughts on the matter of piracy are also welcome :)

When Call of Duty makes what, two hundred million dollars on opening day.
I don't think they'll stop for a bit of piracy.

As it is now, piracy isn't common enough for them to start feeling underpaid.

That is a lot though.

Did you know the basis of Hollywood was founded on Piracy? In fact, technology was constantly being stolen around those times and copyrighted by the rich.

I'm sure that small companies do get hurt by piracy, but the large companies? I'm not so sure about. Some people are try before you buy people. I don't think many people will agree with ISP's having full control over what you do with your bandwidth even though it technically isn't yours and it's being leased to you.

It'll most likely bring more hackers and internet crimes. Some will steal internet from others. Uhh if ISP's actually implemented the blocks, usage VPN's would increase or people would stop using the net or rise up.

Piracy really will never actually take over any industry.

As a student, sometimes I pirate certain software but meh.. Karma gets me pretty bad.. I do buy all my music though and try to buy everything but some things are just ridiculous lol. Well it's not ridiculous, it's just I refused to buy it all on top of my books and school fees and stuff. Some things are ok though.

Thanks Brandon, those are some good points :). I myself am a try before I buy kind of person. As for the stealing internet from others, how would this work? Like using another person's computer as a zombie to download things for you? I'm not sure I understand how this would avoid the blocks.

well that would depend on the ISP no? If all ISP's block it then it's useless. If you do find a way around it and don't wanna get caught, using someone's internet with a VPN is a fairly average but ok way to mask yourself. Of course turn off their router logs and other stuffs.

Sites like Piratebay are banned in several countries in Asia. And people still circumvent it by using proxies to get around it. It will be difficult to stop piracy as a whole unless all ISP providers worldwide actually work together and disallow connections to certain sites, or else, no difference as people will come up with loop holes to exploit

Ah so it would be basically be like the situation somebody in china would be in if they wanted to find out about Tienanmen square.

Of course using somebody else's computer without them knowing is definitely more trouble than it's worth just to get a copy of photoshop or something. I can see using a VPN though.

I know that for those who are not Americans and (in some cases) Britons, then there will always be piracy regarding theatre and games, primarily due to the ridiculous region-specific date releases…

Can't speak for anything else, though.

Big companies will try and create laws against piracy, MAINLY the American companies such as Universal…

The big companies are just trying to fight in a war they already lost. It takes like what, 5 seconds to find a working download link to any popular song?
I personally think it is okay to pirate stuff thay you need or want, but if you really like it and can pay for it, do so. I always buy albums that I like, even if I have them downloaded already.

here in the UK some ISP's already block access to the pirate bay. Mainly BT which is the largest ISP in the country

I just had to LOL on the following
"how long until piracy wins and the entertainment industry decides it is no longer worth their time to produce movies, tv shows, music, ect?"

Sure they lose millions, but they also make millions. I download movies, yeah sure, but I still go to theaters and watch movies in Imax or 3D as it's a much better experience.

Tv shows? Um you do realize that a lot of the tv shows are posted on their channels official website so you can watch them anytime. So to me this can't really apply to TV shows.

Music is a big one, but if you can actually sing, then you're going to make millions on live shows, where as those that auto tune their voices deserve to have their music pirated as they are just trying to make easy money… why allow that?

I also like to watch movies in the stress compared to on my computer, because it is better
Sound and video ect.

For tv shows if you don't live in the us you need to use an American proxy or vpn to watch through their website, which is ridiculous.

And yeah for music, live events should be more ccommon
I also support being able to buy songs or albums directly from a bands website instead of through itunes
