I wish them luck in making it successful and in 2 weeks, Alpha will be out where everyone can play for free.

I played the pre-alpha and it was nostalgia at it's finest to say the least. The community is great - which should not be a surprise because IMO the most mature fanbase that Runescape had was through 2004-2007.

I know to some it may never be the same. Back in 2006 we were all young, so of course we saw Runescape differently. But honestly, when Jagex removed the best aspects of the game in late 2007 … It kind of traumatized me. I know it's just a game but I was so used to playing this game and enjoying it and to see it destroyed was crazy.

Hope to see everyone there on at some point. They will have a lot of players (well into the thousands) so expect some lag at first.

I remember the good old days when Runescape was amazing before the death of wild and loss of free trade. But I no longer no-life Runescape and as far as I know a lot of old school players have moved on in life. Not sure how how successful 2006scape will be but if people want that old raw feel of Runescape it look pretty neat.

Edit: I can't see people selling gold from 2006scape but I can see people exchanging it in certain ratio's for rsgp.

2012-09-03 20:28:23

True that, i mean its amazing to see rs back in its original days of glory but nooo way to i want to start all over again.. all that grinding.. wasted hours of my life.. Yea :/

kingarabian

It will be!

And I doubt they will sell in game currency.

KeepBotting

Imagine how hard 2SGP will be to make versus RSGP. I've been playing since 2007. There weren't a whole lot of ways to make money back then.
The exchange rate (2SGP / RSGP) will be colossal at first, then fall rapidly, as with any new product that is introduced into a market.

Following thread btw.

OMG, cant wait for this. BTW, do you have to donate to play, at least currently?

Anyway, loaded up on some very nice 3 letter names. (7 in fact)
Not gonna do any more, see how much they are worth later on ;)

You had to donate to play Pre-Alpha (which is now done) but Alpha (the version that's coming out) will be free for all.

You should still donate though.

I only have one account (Donator status pending for 3 more days) named Keepbotting.

Trailer looks pretty cool and brings back some good memories! Always forget how much the graphics have changed over the years.

I think people enjoyed the gameplay of Runescape so much back then that no one cared how the game looked like.

Now days its looks > gameplay.

I totally agree with this.
The early graphics were part of the games charm.

yea it's unfortunate that, that's the case in almost every genre of game.. when graphics are pretty much the only part of the game that doesn't matter.

No, because Jagex no longer owns any of the models/animations/sounds/etc used in 2006Scape.

I believe they only own 508+ (I'm assuming you're familiar with Runescape client revisions here) content.
Current revision is somewhere in the 730-750 range I believe.

That's what I am afraid of… Jagex attempting to shut them down. They used to be called rs2006, but they changed it to 2006scape instead. Jagex owns that 'rs' name. Hopefully they leave it alone.

KeepBotting, why don't they own 317-508 anymore?

I don't honestly know why they did it, but…you're familiar with the concept of "abandonware", correct? That's what it's like with older Runescape client revisions.

It's still on shaky legal ground, but I seriously doubt Vault will get into any trouble for it.
Look at SoulSplit, Near Reality, BattleScape, RecklessPk and the other successful Runescape private servers out there.
They all have one thing in common: they use the abandoned content. In SoulSplit's case, they actually created many of their own sounds.

And personally I think the "RS" thing is complete bullshit. Nowhere on their website does it say that "RS" is a trademark of Jagex.

Pre-Alpha is finished. Alpha will be out in a few weeks. They are just finishing some last minute things and working out the login server to handle multiple worlds.

I'm excited for some old school Pest Control!!!

A fair few private servers load different revisions through the cache, so for example:

  • 317 loading 562.
  • 317 loading 617.
  • 508 loading 7??

The list goes on.

317 loading 562 means it looks like a 317 but has 562 models, NPC's, items etc.

Jagex mainly shuts down the servers that have a high(ish) revision, say, 617+. My guess is because it's much like the current game compared to 317's.

I have a 474 loading 562 source. It's pretty badass.

I happen to know that 2006Scape uses a 377 cache.

Not sure. I have 2006Scape's cache and lava seems to display fine using it.
Maybe they fixed the issue. At any rate I've never heard of it.

Safe as in…?

If you mean safe as in files are not malicious; I doubt they will ruin all the time spent to try and hack people, unless they're idiots.

If you mean safe from Jagex, then they should be fine. As long as they don't introduce updated items. :)

So what have 2006scape.com done to prevent this happening again? As I recall, if you clicked to allow the client to run after he'd hacked it would run a RAT. (Did I term that right?)

Well yes he did replace the webclient (which is part of the website) with a RAT (yes you did it right) but the actual client (which was from a mirrored source) remained untouched as far as I know.
There was a fake link put up.
