Tell us about yourself…
From: (s)okkr7
My name is Matt. I like computers, duh, and sports such as: soccer, basketball, tennis, and disc golf! My hobby is to find old bicycles and restore them, then sell them for profit. I like to play runescape on my downtime, and I never like to give up on a challenge. I am employed at a local grocery store as customer service, and I love to help people no matter how hard the task. I like to solve things on my own as best as I can to better my knowledge, and as a last resort, I ask for help. Being a junior in high school, I have a full schedule and I'm going to a local college for computer sciences/programming (as my school has no such curriculum). I plan to take a route of computers in college, and I feel as this community is already helping, so why not apply to better myself. Thanks.

Hey there, it's good to see that you're trying, but there are a few problems I have with your script(s).

procedure Location;
var
X, Y: integer;
begin
WriteLn('Failed ' + IntToStr(TimesFailed) + ' Times');
Inc(TimesFailed);
if FindDTMRotated(Stone, x, y, MSX1, MSY1, MSX2, MSY2, -Pi, Pi, Pi/30, FoundIt) or FindDTMRotated(StoneFailsafe, x, y, MSX1, MSY1, MSX2, MSY2, -Pi, Pi, Pi/30, FoundIt)then
begin
WriteLn('Hopping across');
StepDatStone;
end;
if FindDTMRotated(FirstTree, x, y, MSX1, MSY1, MSX2, MSY2, -Pi, Pi, Pi/30, FoundIt)then
begin
WriteLn('Climbing trunk');
ClimbTree;
end;
if FindDTMRotated(Bars, x, y, 180, 0, 420, 340, -Pi, Pi, Pi/30, FoundIt)then

All that can be condensed into a nice case statement.

Also, you tend to rely on Waits ALOT, say a lag spike occurs, your whole proc. has been butchered :l

Although DTMs are decent to use, i'd prefer if you used TPAs to detect your obstacles, as they are amazingly accurate.

Overall, though you have activity (which is a great thing!) I don't feel the scripts are upto date with the SRL Member standards. Keep trying though!

Best of luck.

Yeah I like to declare variables before time so I don't have to later on, but I realize it's bad :x.. Also, never got around to completing that procedure, sadly.

Copied from elsewhere? It'd be nice to know what's "simple" and "flawed" too.

1. Over-use of global variables. Not only is this bad practice, but it greatly increases memory usage.

2. Crediting people for their work - Flight and RyGuy.

3. Using DTMs for things TPAs would be more accurate for - While it may be possible to use DTMs for certain obstacles, the use of TPAs would be much more efficient and accurate. Not to mention that I would like to see you demonstrate your ability using them prior to me voting.

4. Un-used procedure - As pointed out by BraK. I like to see that you take pride in your script, that you've read it over a few times before posting it up here for an application and make it as efficient and 'professional' as possible. Leaving an un-used/finished procedure in there doesn't demonstrate pride in your work for me.

5. IsUpText - Would much rather see WaitUpText here.

6. This below is an infinite loop - don't ever have these.
procedure ClimbTree;
begin
if FindDTMRotated(FirstTree, X, Y, MSX1, MSY1, MSX2, MSY2, -Pi, Pi, Pi/30, FoundIt) then
repeat
Mouse(X, Y, 5, 5, True);
Wait(1);
until Not FindDTMRotated(FirstTree, X, Y, MSX1, MSY1, MSX2, MSY2, -Pi, Pi, Pi/30, FoundIt) and FindDTMRotated(Bars, x, y, 180, 0, 420, 340, -Pi, Pi, Pi/30, FoundIt);
end;
- Yet the procedure immediately below it you have a failsafe to stop an infinite loop, you clearly now how to do it, but knowing how to write a good script and actually implementing your knowledge and doing it are two different things.

7. Over reliance on static waits - As shay mentioned, if the user gets a lag spike the whole lot goes out of whack. You need failsafes and checks to make sure that things happened the way they should have.

8. Standards - Overall they are pretty good. Would like to see a bit more spacing, like between procedures and I usually like to space out groups of actions within my procedures, too. Not necessary, but I feel it makes things easier to read and keep a track of what's going on. Couple of capitalised words and missing a couple of indentations, but all up pretty good.

9. Lengthy procedures full of if..then statements rather than being shortened to one case statement.

I only went through your first script attached, but I hope these bits of information help you out a little bit. Not everyone gets in on their first member's application, but it is only a waste of time if you don't come away learning anything from it.

Check out some of the guides on member's applications and try to learn each element they suggest you know for a good application.

He has several condition statements in that code block.

If that can sit inside a case statement, then maybe I'm doing it wrong.

Some stuff I've found, might have been posted before. A bit messy but oh well.

Static waits
Waiting then checking for uptext instead of WaitUptext
Mouse(629, 262, 10, 5, Mouse_Left);
Static coords for a spell that could be on a different position if the spellbook is setup differently.
Findblackchatmessage is also way to long and if someone would type that in RS it would also think it's out of astrals.
TimeFromMark(Invy) > 71000) -> static 71 sec wait

repeat
GameTab(tab_magic);
Mouse(629, 262, 10, 5, Mouse_Left);
until (InvCount = 4)
Infinite loop as it never increases InvCount

if (InvCount = 4) then
unnecessary check as it does only get there if invcount = 4

–

So yeah overall I don't want to see static waits, use a WaitFunc or something else. Some waits aren't even randomized so work on that :P You can't avoid having some waits but you can avoid loads of them. This does also increase the speed of the script.

And I'd like to see more advanced way of object detection instead of using DTM's/bitmaps.

Personally i'd reapply when you manage to change the script to using TPA's. Apply for SRL Members isn't about making the best script in the game, its about showing what you can do with your knowledge, as far as i know your script doesn't even have to work.

I voted no, but here are my 2cents even though it has already been said.

A few global variables is understandable, but you just have too many imo.

I would have rather seen TPA's or at very least your own DTM's and not some one else's.

You do look like you are on a very good path however. I would personally suggest starting with a new script from scratch rather then just editing this one if you wish to submit another application. Don't rush your self, the best learning is done over time, not rushed.

Yeah well, it is. Also just on the presentation side of things, I really would not advise saying
//next script I whipped up in a day or two, kinda lame//

As it leaves the viewer already skeptical, better to not include it, or have it as perfect as you can get it. You will get in next time though I'm sure :).

<3 quick question! does a DTM necessarily HAVE to have the same color around it? Or have I just learned it wrong?

I am not quite sure what you mean by "does a DTM necessarily HAVE to have the same color around it".

When creating a DTM you select certain points, each of these points will have a colour that corresponds to the individual point. From there you may add tolerance and area to each of the points. The tolerance allows for colour change and the area allows the point to shift slightly.

Bearing in mind the greater the area and tolerance the greater the risk of false positives.
