Was the Trade Limit good?

Back at the beginning of 2007, we saw the introduction of the trade limit, which caused some of the biggest riots in Runescape history, but was it all really that bad?

I know from the perspective of botters, a lot of people hated it because it meant they couldn't bot on loads of accounts and feed the cash, but I personally just botted on my main (this is when I first started botting, in fact). Obviously for the Java bots, many of them were gold farmers, so their lives were made significantly harder.

On the flip side, I felt that Runescape actually had an increase in quality, I personally felt that the updates brought out were mechanically really successful (eg, While Guthix Sleeps was released, which I thought was the best update to the game). It was one of those few recent points that Jagex proved that they cared about their game, if even some of the community really disliked it. But how much of the legitimate community actually hated it that badly.

I mean, yeah, it definitely did affect the legitimate players a lot, they shouldn't have implemented it so harshly, only being able to trade 30k was a terrible idea, but maybe only a couple of hundred k would have actually been successful. Or perhaps something more mathematical, like a percentage trade, so there is able to be a larger percentage difference the larger the trade.

What do you guys think? Did the trade limit actually negatively affect the health of the game? Maybe these terrible recent updates have been down to new management, but they definitely lack on the quality that they used to.

I agree, i mean after that restriction were lifted gold farming went out of control and thing shave been going down hill since. Having a trade limit would solve so many problems at once, e.i. rwt, gold farming, gambling. I think overall improving the game quality again..

to a certain extent but lets be honest it wasn't exactly ideal. maybe if they met halfway and had a large trade limit (i.e 500k or 1m)

Definitely, I mean surely one of the best things to keep a game healthy is to ensure that the players are, well, REAL.

I agree, perhaps 1m, but with a larger time limit. Because lets be honest, you're not going to be making a large trade frequently, are you? But then it still gives players a bit more of the freedom they deserve

To be honest I loved the no trade limit, ok it sucked if you wanted to borrow from a friend but to be honest that was the first time I took flipping on board and made my first 10m,20m and so on to 100m, with the implementation of free trade again everything just flunked.

Ideally something should be done to kill this RWT and destruction of the economy.

Truthfully I don't think it effected me all that much. I remember bringing around 10M at a time into the wildy… Good times.

Anyway, I do think in the long run, it was helpful for them (Goldfarmers had a hard time)

Wasn't the main reason for lifting the trade limit restriction to reintroduce PK'ing in the wilderness?
I did enjoy the game more when there was a trade limit, even if it did make some things more difficult. Although after some time, they made some adjustments so that if you had been friends in-game for a fixed amount of time, then you could trade them more.

That's the thing, in the long run, people wouldn't have noticed it at all. It got to the point where people barely noticed, and had completely forgotten about it. And then all of a sudden, I assume as a PR stunt, they announced a potential return, they just needed money…

^True story, but I think that if they put a trade limit now, Id probably start the riot lol.

To reach my goal, GP transfer from 5 different accounts is necessary!

Couldn't you use the clan wars red portal to transfer stuff when the trade limit was around?

Like that there were many ways, Wildy PK, Duel Arena, Falador drop party (though up to 49.9k lol).

Many Many ways, just that the easiest was to go up to a person and right click :P

I really liked it, all goldfarmers were gone, and that made everything you could do on a single account more profitable. It saves time and processing power in the long run.
Maybe they could make it so that you can trade according to your total level, ie 1k total=1m, 2k total=10m and such. Would encourage people to train(or bot :P) and would still stop the goldfarmers.

I think that's a brilliant idea.
I really do like the idea of the gold limit… But that means I can't buy more gold!

At least it would provide a stable economy instead of what we have now.

That's exactly right. I'm all for a trade limit…
If only Jagex would do it. This economy really does need to be fixed.

Its not the tradelimit, bots existed in the gold era of RS2, back then Jagex just banned bots without any hesitation in 04-06, it also resulted in lots of legit players ending up banned, mostly because of assumed association with bot accounts, even tho the "association" could actually have been accepting free 1k essences from random guy in trade. Problem isnt not having trade limit, its the fact that you can bot recklessly without getting banned. Back in the day if you had your char online for 12 hours in a row botting coal without humanlike breaks, you would have been just simply set up for ban, you actually had to play smart, unlike now.

All in all, Jagex should just start banning players. They are just banning the most obvious ones, well not even all of the most obvious ones.

I agree, something does really need to be done now. It's getting out of control. I just doubt they have the balls to do such a thing anymore. xD

what I hate is the market tbh, recently i'v been trying to get back into flipping and I'm finding ALOT of decently high demand items are crashing big time just because they are being botted so hard. I'v just been buying stuff as cheap as possible (sometimes even half the ge price) and waiting a bit to sell for a good profit

For any business, it is about money, how can we make the most amount of money with the best returns. If they did not make money from runescape because off the bots, they would definitely squash that real quick.

So the question is, do they make more money because of the bots? Maybe more monthly subscriptions is sold because to make real good gp you need members?

The legit players is always complaining, but if there was not a demand for the gold, a black market to get the moola, it would not have been profitable for the gold farmers, and who wants to buy the gold? Ain`t it the legit player?

I mean the gold farmers don`t want to buy, they want to sell.

I think I have a different view :S

I hate the trade limit but I think it's the hypocrites that ruin the game.
I know a lot of ppl say they hate hold farming but lets be real that's just online talk. A lot of those same ppl farm like mad.

Anyway I also think the generations of players just got more lazy is all. Some ppl literally bot every single thing and then complain about being bored. There's a lot of reasons why things are bad.

That all being said, I hated the trade limit because I couldn't lend friends some of my money, I hated having to "Junk trade" and take useless items in order to gain a small profit. Let's say I gained a 50k profit 5 mins ago and wanted to sell another item, I couldn't.

this is the down side but a 1m limit would be ok but gold farmers could just use multi accs to sell their monies

Brandon, you hit the nail on the head. I have found that when people make a real issue out of something, usually they are more guilty of doing it themselves than the other way round.

To be honest I have been against the gold farmers for years, All I can say is if you cant beat em, join em.
My main acct is maxed so while im at work why not just bot for gold now.
And I agree Jagex doesnt seem to care who bots at all anymore. Totally obvious accts that get reported hundreds of times a day still continue to bot months later.

As my main acct I never botted and I prefered the trade limit with unlimited trade to friends of longer than a month. After all its hard to trade a tassy or bcp split among friends without unlimited trade.

Truthfully, when the trade limit came out, I thought it was a great excuse to be able to say:

"Oo sorry guys, with the new trade limit, I can't give that 100M, even though I have bills (I really don't right now :P)"

or

"Oo sorry guys, with the new trade limit, I can't give the 2.147b you bought from me :) "
