So yesterday and today a guy who sounded like a middle-east man called me and claimed that he was working for Microsoft and he told me that one of our windows computers is sending reprots about a hideous virus!
The virus could wipe my harddrive if I dont do something very quick. He then started to talk about I should start that computer and follow instructions and give credit card info etc for a fee and stuff. I quickly googled "a guy from microsoft called me and talked about a virus" and it seems like this idd was a attempt for stealing credit cards.
Have anyone else experienced this? Is this "legit" and ive made a huge fool out of myself? I told him to call back later but I don
t know how to react :/

Never experienced it, but it's kind of obvious it was a scam :p
And no, only way to make a fool out of yourself was to fall for that.. microsoft needs to go through a hell of a lot more than what their technical support has access to in order to get your IP let alone your phone number

Scam for sure, my dad got something similar before, he also got one from DISH Network (TV provider) multiple times. It's all BS. :] You're fine, stay safe, use common sense!

Tell him "please stay on the line for a few minutes thanks"
then barely cover the phone and be like

LOL It's a scam. Happened to me 4 times. I was smart enough to tell the idiot that you cannot find errors in MSConfig.
First they will ask you to open Windows Error Logging. They will attempt to fool you and say that the red X's are all bad errors.
They will ask you to delete the logs of course. They will ask you to open msconfig and tell you that all that crap is slowing down you're computer(Only some of the startup items will though).. Then they will offer you "Protection" If and only if you give them access to your computer. By that time I just told the guy I'm a software engineer and he hung up immediately LOL.
Just pretended the whole time like I was following along bahaha.

Microsoft will never contact you about a virus or anything, the most you'll get from them is an email with a global announcement.

Ask where their office is, ask for an address. If they can't tell you, it's obvious.
Phone scams are pretty common in my country, they call people all the time, claiming to collect data for research or giving away free watches. When I get the calls I just ask for their address aggressively, they always hang up. Then I call their number at 5 AM a few days later. :D

if it's a cellphone number(you can google the number to find that out). write a php script or something to spam bomb their phone(email to text)… :D I've done this before with people who messed with me, it's extremely effective especially if multiple(5+) texts are sent hundreds of times simultaneously :D

It is fake, they called me and then I asked him if it is for Windows 7 or Office… he hung up.

When they called me, I told him it was impossible that they had received a report because I have Ubuntu. Hung up immediately :)
