Help with my new PC

Hi guys!

I'm planning to buy a new PC. I've never been into hardware that much, so now I literally have no idea of what to get. This is what I've come up to, relying just on the price:

Intel Core i7 3770K 3.5GHz Quad Core LGA 1155 Retail Boxed $335
GIGABYTE GA-Z77M-D3H LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA $93
XFX ATI Radeon HD6870 1GB DDR5 2DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort PCI-E $203
Kingston KHX1600C9D3K4/16GX HyperX 16GB 240-pin DDR3 $115
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200rpm 64MB Cache SATA-3 3 $102
HP DH-16AAL 8x DVD±RW DL SATA Drive w/LightScrib $22
Sentey ERP-600-SS Black 600W ATX $58

Total: $928

I'm getting all this off eBay.

So, if you know any issues with what I want to order, have any suggestion/feedback, or know a store where I can get a better deal (items need to be shipped to/be located in Miami, FL) please let me know, as it will be of great help to me.

I'm spending (what to me is) a lot of money on my new pc, and I want to be sure I'll get something good, and where else could I ask for help other than in the forum I've been part of for 6 years? (yea, S I X f*ing yearsss).

Thanks everyoneee!

What is your budget for this? I'm a reputable member over at overclock.net so I can help configure something for you.

Also, don't buy from ebay for this type of thing unless it's an authorized seller. If it's not an authorized seller the hardware is considered second hand whether it's used or not and the warranty won't be honored by the manufacturer unless the warranty is done via serial number.

Do you really need the i7? You could go with an i5 eh

Don't get that power supply, I gotta brb 30 min but I'll give more info in a sec

alright back earlier than I thought

first I agree, don't get anything from ebay, but I wouldn't get anything from ebay no matter how good the seller is.. if it were computer stuff, honestly.. (as the guy said above, but I'm like anti ebay when it comes to electronics)

now the power supply is multi rail, you don't want to deal with making sure you're not putting too much load on one of the rails, so I would definitely go to a single rail so you don't have to worry about it..

also for your graphics, I would go for a 7850, it will give you the same power & slightly more, it is quite a bit more energy efficient and it will overclock a good deal more (in the future you may want to overclock instead of upgrade)

everything else looks pretty good I'm sure you know what you want in a processor and aren't only going to do silly stuff like gaming with a 8 thread cpu.. and kingston is good memory, that's all my server memory

also if you aren't looking to overclock the cpu, that is a good buy, but if you think you may in the future, there are better buys

Thanks for the replies!

I think the main deal here is eBay, followed by the power supply. Can you give me an example of a good PSU? I'm from Argentina, and all we have here labeled as a top brand is Sentey and CoolerMaster.

Also, if you can name an online store, it would be great. I'll do some googleing now too.

Thanks!!

Can't be sure about shipping, especially down there I have no idea

corsair & seasonic are pretty much the best (omglol seasonic makes corsairs power supplies!) seasonic also makes a lot of other power supplies as far as they go, quality wise.. there's not much of a competition

I'm unfamiliar with navigating through ebay or I would link you, however you got the right idea, 600watts is a good spot for you to be looking in, with those parts you could easily be running on a decent 500watt power supply too, however the supply itself will only be pulling as much wattage as the components need, so you won't magically be using 100 watts less..
around 50% load is the perfect spot for power supplies, so your whole setup would be doing about 100watts idle - 250 watts load (just a super rough estimate, I didn't even add)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Corsair-Professional-CMPSU-650HX-650W-Power-Supply-/251137781423?pt=PCA_UPS&hash=item3a78fa6eaf
That is a bit much, and I wouldn't trust some random person with that honestly..
I read sentey is a pretty good brand after I saw your supply, however you don't want the two rails.. if you find one with a single rail link it here maybe we can find some info on it but as a power supply vendor they got a decent reputation so far (almost all power supply brands have shitty reps so that's a good thing if it has a good rep :P )

also I have a power supply here I'm trying to sell but doubt you're interested rofl

thermaltake, rosewell have like 1 good model out of a ton.. so stay away most of the time

ocz has a few horrible models and a few good ones..

pretty much corsair & seasonic are the top dogs, a few other brands that I'm not familiar with also have lots of good supplies, but if you link it usually google will find a bunch of reviews to see if it is decent

Great! Oh, don't worry about shipping to Argentina. A friend (trustworthy, don't worry) will receive it for me in Miami, FL. so I guess any online store that ships inside the US will work.

Just found the psu you suggested, by a reputable seller here, so I guess I'll get that one…

2012-08-28 02:48:03

Oh, if it's inside of US I'd go with newegg / frozencpu (modding, which you're not interested in.. but maybe in the future) / tigerdirect without a doubt

newegg will give you 90% of the time everything you need, however that might change

I would go for some stuff like:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116501
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139027
X2 of http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231428 for your 16gb total
however, if you think maybe, just maybe you might want to go 32GB later in life, I would go 2x8GB of ram

nothing on earth can compete with newegg for over all selection, however they're canada/usa only so a lot of the world misses out =[

the savings for the ram can go toward something like:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150609

those are just ideas, also this is a very stable board in my experience (have built two machines with it at the same company):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157296
the board is running two machines that are on 24/7 doing medium load - high load, so they are getting their share of work and have done well for a few months

but I'd also like to know your future plans
overclocking, ever?
overclocking graphics card?
two of those graphics card?
we talking like.. years down the road, but you might as well get the power supply for it now.. also same deal with the ram sizes.
you can let me know what you do too, to get the best for what you need it to do

Alright so I selected something with the 800-1000$ budget you mentioned. It's pretty balanced, should be pretty quick too. The only real change at this point if whether 8GB of ram is enough for you, another kit of the stuff I selected will only run you another 50$ and give you a total of 16GB.

I chose the K version CPU to allow for overclocking, it was only a few more dollars for when/if you decide to do that. It gives a pretty good jump in speed, so I recommend learning to do that.

OR swapping the CPU from a 3570k to a 3770k for 110$ more but having to skimp out a little on the case to fit it in the budget easier

Like grats said below me here, a lot of people can make use of the 8 threads around here. It just depends whether you're one of those people or not, you can still run quite a few clients on a quad (I heard between 7-10 on a 2500k..)

grats

2012-08-28 04:30:04

A lot of people would eat up 8 threads around here, I assume he knows that and that's why he had a HT'd processor

xYumz

2012-08-28 04:35:37

That's true.. I'll edit that a little and get it to a little over 1000$ with the 3770k or something

grats

2012-08-28 04:52:25

Also why I'm not sure if he'd want to go up to 32GB of ram in the future, I see all kinds of stuff around here, it isn't like toms/oc net where 99% are gaming and overclocking for fun lol

Not really much diff from the ram, honestly.. especially since I doubt he'll care to overclock it

looks like a good build shady, remember if you plan on overclocking or getting another graphics say so now!

good cooler too, will help prolong your cpu life, even if ocing a tiny bit

also I love NZXT cases, never used that one but it'll probably be as good as their others

Sorry for not answering earlier about what I want to do with it guys. You're right, I don't even know what overclocking is (I do know, but you get the point). I'm not planning to do that and I doubt I'll do it in the future.

As a matter of fact, this is the first desktop I'll ever have. I've been using my laptop for 4-5 years now, I don't even know it's specs! I added 1gb of ram, so now I have 2gb ddr2, but don't even ask about anything else. If it came with only 1gb, and I bought it 4-5 years ago for about $300, so you can imagine both the specs and my knowledge of computer hardware…

I've tried some games (such as arma 2's mod, DayZ) and some other gaming/design/scripting apps which I liked on friends' pcs, and that's pretty much what I want to do with it.
I think the heaviest things I'll do will be that DayZ game, hd video editing/rendering, and that's it. I've written a scar script that helps me with my job, needs to be running all day but I already have two slave netbooks for that so… I think I'll do more than better with that.

(If you want to check out my gigs, http://fiverr.com/slimshady002 I offer facebook likes and english-spanish translations. Not a lot of services but you can have them for free if you need them)

grats

2012-08-28 05:54:03

Alright, well games are designed to run normally on 2-3 cores max (game devs are shitty, I hope you aren't if you decide to do it :) ) anyway, rendering and compiling / video editing etc will see a good boost with those 8 threads 4 cores, where-as gaming would be better on a simple 4 core which would be cheaper.

no matter what, you're going to see an EXTREME performance boost vs your laptop, I guarantee that, you'll probably overclock in the future ( a few years) when you get bored or something..

basically overclocking is pushing somethings power past the "stock" power and getting more performance out of it, however this generates more heat.. so people liquid cool and all that fancy crap, the cooler you're getting is well capable of handling overclocking (to some extent) however you definitely won't be bothered by its stock power, compared to your laptop.. maybe in a few years or months you might want to try it out.. I'll probably be around here for years to come, I enjoy forums for no reason.. so you can always give me a message, also xyumz site overclock.net as he said is a very good source to ask questions.. again.. this machine is going to be a shit load more powerful than your laptop so you don't need to bother for a long while

Just to chime in after reading this bit, you do realize you have to assemble the PCs components right? That is unless you bring it to a shop and have them do it.

It's not hard though, it's like Legos that have to be put together in proper order.

grats

2012-08-28 06:40:54

It's a trillion times easier than legos, you can't put stuff in the wrong spot.. only harder part is you can't throw them at the wall and expect them to recover fully

2012-08-28 07:35:57

Oh yea, I know how to set it up :) I'm a diy guy. I play a lot with arduinos and stuff, I made my own RFID door (pretty easy though) and some other projects, and I've (ironically) assembled most of my friend's/familly's pcs.

Thanks againnnnnnn, I'll let you know how it goes once I get it :D have a great week guys!
