Thinking of closing MSI development

This was brought to my attention earlier today, and I thought it was worth bringing up:
From: Ollybest
I was just looking though the MSI sub sections at all of the bugs recent and past, and your personally kept it going for at least a year on your own and since you cant be as active as you used to be MSI is slowly dieing since no one really wants to commit things to it why? I think its more of a personal things people want there own scripts, they want to write the script they way they want.

Is it worth watching a project slowly die over time? or is it time just to remove it? SRL scripts have grown hugely over the past 6 months, nearly everything that MSI does + tons more can be found in the script sections.

I just wanted you thoughts on it…. Id rather see it removed in "pride" then outdate its self over time.

I haven't been keeping up with how MSI is doing, but it seems like it's slowly dying. I knew this was going to happen when I stepped down. Not because NCDS and Kyle are incapable, but simply because they don't have enough time. It's a very large project to keep running, especially since the game changes so much, and when you only have limited time, it's almost impossible.

The only reason I was able to do it was because I only played hockey for two years. I had almost endless hours to commit to MSI.

I feel like it's not worth keeping it open when it's going to die anyway. I would rather see it taken down when it's somewhat working, than when it's completely broken (it could be completely broken now, I don't know).

Anyway, what's everyone's thoughts?

I plan to keep working on it, I've done small changes here and there, but that's all I can really commit at this moment. Thing is, we are a community, if MSI breaks then the users should at least make an attempt to fix it.

The thing is, they aren't. Most people want to write their own scripts. They want to show off their skills, and working on something like MSI, the credit is given to the community, not the person who writes a certain part of the code.

It's a large burden or you and NCDS to take on considering you both have full time jobs. There's just a lot to do to because of how often RS changes. Not to mention everything MSI has can be found in the public scripts section. Script activity has really picked up in the last while.

As much as it saddens me to close it, it may be the better option. It would certainly take the pressure off us.

I don't know, MSI was great in it's day. I was really hoping it would take off as a community project, but unfortunately, not many people were interested. Kyle, NCDS, and myself were really the only ones who ever did a lot to contribute, and we can't be around forever.

We could leave it be and let MSI die (I really don't see it being where it used to be again), or we could close development and maybe, someone would revive it in the future.

Simple fact is that's not how things go, though. :/

At this point, I would rather see MSI 'shut down' so to speak. Not remove any code from the internet or whatever, just 'close' development. MSI was great back when SRL was in a sort of "depression", or sorts. However, we have a fairly populated script a section and a serious lack of development and community interest in MSI.

One thing I've always had in my mind was that I don't really want MSI to cover skills and locations that we have well put together scripts for open to the public and other members. I've also seen MSI discourage people from writing scripts because "MSI does it".

I'm not saying remove everything MSI related and forget about it. More so, we can make an official post saying that further development of MSI has been postponed. That way any users are free to maintain whatever they want for their own use.

They do get credit, it may not be only their credit, but their name goes into the code, the commits, and the change announcements.

Yeah, I totally understand that. Which sucks because I really enjoyed working on MSI, the model is great!

It's a very sad thought, and I know for you it's even more sad, it's your baby. It was the first project that I took up working on when I got back.

MSI is still great today, it's just keeping it updated with the ever so changing game that it takes time that none of us really have.

If we are going to close it, I say do it now. I'd rather see it die in a quick fashion, rather than suffering a slow and agonizing death. We could keep everything the way they are now, and if people make updates in the future, they could still be pushed out.

I wish they would though, they don't know the potential that MSI has :/

I agree with this.

And this too.

That sounds good.

I wish more people would get involved :/

I'm interested in seeing MSI work with lape SRL5. Is MSI currently broken, or do people just not develop it further, to a next level, so to speak?

There is currently a lot that needs updating. I might have a bit today to actually setup simba and SRL and see exactly how things are working. Regardless, community involvement has been near nil, and I think that's the real point here.

I've always enjoyed working on MSI though, and have no intention to "close" development is the desire to work on it is still there.

This is the best way to explain it.

I love working on MSI too.

Wizzup, there should be a patch somewhere to get MSI to compile with Lape. Probably out of date, though.

From what I can tell (just from reading/PMs), there are still some scripts in MSI that work. On the other hand, there is a lot that isn't working.

Getting it to compile in Lape is one thing… getting it to work is another. There are some things in MSI that (as far as I know) aren't supported in Lape yet. The biggest being forms.

NCDS and Kyle: I know you guys say you like working on MSI, and there's still interest, but we have to look at the facts. It's been a long time since any been real development done (not meant to insult anyone). This could be for many reasons, but I don't see lack of interest on your part one of them. You both have real lives, and heading a project that needs constant updating (and that's so large) is a lot to keep up with. There's just so much that can go wrong in an RS script, if you don't have time to maintain it, it usually won't work for very long (sure, there are exceptions).

Another option could be to strip MSI down. Some possible changes:
  • Remove the form (will be better for Lape).
  • Only support the popular or "good" locations for each skill, not every one.
  • Could reduce the amount of features/complicated code. For example, anything I wrote for MSI was written for multiple scripts per player; that can be removed.
I'm sure we could come up with all kinds of things to change. No matter what we do, we're looking at a lot of work.

There's another thing we need to consider: is it worth our time to keep MSI development going when our (when I say our, I mean NCDS, Kyle, and myself) skills are probably more useful developing SRL6 in Lape?

I don't think closing development would be a bad idea. It might even motivate some people to make some scripts they previously didn't want to because "MSI did it".

On a personal note, I do have a little more free time here and there, but I've lost interest in scripting for RS, mostly because I think Jagex have become money hungry and filled the game with ridiculous advertisements and promotions. So that's one of the reasons I haven't been writing any code.

Oh, and Wizzup?, if you read this: UPDATE THE LANDING PAGE AND FAVICON!

I got the idea to "strip down" MSI some time ago, just didn't think anyone would go for it. That's the idea I support most, though.

That way we can still provide basic scripts to the SRL community as sort of a "default". The main problem I know of with MSI right now is with SPS, or the way the walking is done. I haven't had much time to look into the though.

I've got to fix my PC before I can really do anything though. (got "wiped" yesterday :/)

I like that thought. I don't want to completely delete the code we have now, though. I would rather save a copy of the version we have now (maybe keep it in a .zip in the repository?), then we can strip whatever we need.

I would even take the "default" aspect a little further and say have just basic locations for the skills we have. By that I mean 1 or 2 of the most popular (or ones that work the best) and strip down features (have the user start with a hatchet so MSI doesn't even have to check for one). We could even go as far as removing DTMs altogether, and just count how many loads the player has done. That would require less updating.

I mean, we could really go back to basics if we wanted (which might be the best solution).

I'm in support of anything you think needs to be done. :) However, finding the time to do them, that's another thing.

Coh3n

2012-09-11 22:39:05

It's really tough to say. I think the options are to strip it down, and close development.

I honestly don't think any of us have the time to strip it down (and if we do, I feel it would be better to work on SRL6), and I don't want to put pressure on anyone to get it done. If you guys feel really strongly about not closing development, I won't, otherwise I'll make the announcement in a week or so, and close the MSI forums.

E: Was just thinking if we can get SRL6 done sometime in the next 10 years, we could strip down MSI at the same time (ish) so when SRL6 is released, a new MSI is as well. Either that, OR we could write SRL6 by MSI. By that I mean whatever is required for MSI, write in SRL6 (to start, anyway).

I think this is ultimately the best option. If we made it so MSI's core was all made up of SRL functions we would really only need to focus on maintaining one thing, SRL.

At that point we could also likely do away with MSI.sex and just ship MSI with SRL and install to the currently empty '\Simba\Scripts\' directory.

Coh3n

2012-09-12 11:53:12

Thing is, MSI utilizes A LOT of SRL, so if someone went through and tried to compile MSI and added every function to SRL that's needed, it would get quite large (which is a good thing). I'm sure there are also some MSI functions that would be useful in SRL, which could be addressed at the same time.

The only issue with that is getting some people who have the time to do something like this.

Okay, so here's what I'm thinking. BraK has informed me that there are a lot of people that complain about the state of MSI. So, while we downsize it, convert it to Lape and SRL-6, I think it would be a good idea to close hide the MSI forums.

I can make an announcement explaining why, and what our plans are. I will keep the MSI board open for us to discuss the new MSI (what should we call it?), but everything will be hidden to everyone else.

Once we finish the new MSI and SRL-6, I will completely archive all the current threads, and update the useful ones.

Anyone disagree?

Sounds good to me.

I don't know as we need to name it something different though, do we?

Doesn't really matter. I'm fine with keeping it as MSI. I'll close the forum and make the announcement this weekend.
