Ramadan Mubarak to those who are observing it :)

Todays the first day of Ramadan (its a period of 29-30 days where Muslims fast and refrain from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset).

I think its gonna be a hard 29-30 days of fasting with this summer heat thats here. This is my 7th year of fasting, lets see how well I do :P

Yeah I live in Indonesia so it's a huge deal here. Most of my friends here will be fasting, a couple lady friends won't for at least the first two weeks. Here they'll have a big meal at like 4 AM every day and fast until 6 PM or so.

Edit:
Oh yeah, best of luck to you! :p

Really?
People I know usually lose weight over the month of Ramadan, unless you eat excessively during sehri and iftaar, idk how you would gain weight

People eat very irregularly during Ramadan and their metabolism gets screwed up, that's why they gain weight.

Oh there are plenty of people who eat salads… They just choose to drown it in bacon, cheese, and ranch!

yeah they get the salad and add the unhealthiest of things to it so that the unhealthy becomes healthy with addition of salad

american food logic: if it has cheese + bacon it's automatically healthy and you must eat enough for 2 people

Ramadan, I've considered doing it myself too. Not out of religious motivations, just because it is healthy. At least that is what some people claim. I think it is a great tradition and I wish the best of luck following it for the SRL users who take part in the Ramadan.

Only fro sunrise to sunset. The goal of Ramadan isn't to not just eat, its more spiritual and let's you know how fortunate you are. After the long day of fasting, you have a meal to come to, while others do not.

That is the downside, most of them don't. But during hot and long days it is necessary. It is also not really mentioned in there book.

Correct. My friends tell me they simply can't put anything in their mouth, including drinking and even chewing gum. A buddy of mine here says it really sucks because he's a heavy coffee drinker.

If you drink any water, your fast is broken and you should continue drinking/eating for the day as the fast will no longer be counted.

Even swallowing your own spit in order to quench thirst is not allowed.

Yeh I always found this one tricky as its very hard to not try to swallow excessive saliva :/

On another note, for me fasting is the easy part of ramadan..the waking up very early and prayer is what i find very very hard.

It's fine to swallow saliva, just not using it to quench your thirst.

Meh it's easy now. Not sure how long your fasts are but in England it's 20 hours, so there's no 'early waking up', you just stay awake :p

Just so everyone is clear with it, fasting is not only for food. You are also supposed to stop swearing for the month and cease all sexual activity and thoughts.
In my country 99% of the population is muslim according to the records and about 90% fast I suppose, but most of them do it just for the looks and I'm pretty sure they eat(&fap) at home. Everyone drinks alcohol in other months anyway, so it's like a screwed up variation of Islam that people have over here.
Oh, did I mention that in some cities they beat and shoot people who drink water in busses and on the streets during the day?

But I love how SRL/Villavu is so aware of all the events and how much respect they have for everyone.

True Islam does not teach this violent crap…. those Muslims who teach or participate in violence against their neighbors (no matter what nationality or religion) not only have NO Honor, but also spit into the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad…. sadly they will not know this until they meet him in the afterlife for an eternity of their butts getting whipped…

Seems to me that the only difference with an average American city is the water drink requirement. joke joke

A lot of people here are saying 'I should do it' and 'I want to do it' but you're not!

Pick a day, and on that that day do not eat or drink form your dawn till dusk..

Though I should point out the actually 'dawn' times for fasting are a few hours earlier meaning the fasts are a few hours longer.

Without making my dawn time earlier, this would mean that fasting will take over 17 hours(17:24). That is not possible for me anyway, I can't handle restraining from water for longer then 5 hours…

I will do this simply to prove to myself that I can. I was an extremely healthy eater, but due to time restraints (mainly to do with a 25hr working week and a full-time university timetable) I have recently fallen off this band-wagon.

This can be my 'kick-start' back into healthy eating (my real problem is portion control).

Tomorrow in Brisbane, Australia the sunrise/sunset times are 06:33am and 17:16pm
So between those times tomorrow I will not be eating or drinking.

And best of luck to all of you who are doing this for actual religious purposes, it really does make you think just how fortunate we are to be able to return home to a meal at the end of a day while many people don't have this same 'privilege'.

The biggest problem with this: Everyone who attends it smells terrible because they eat at silly hours. It's really annoying. Of course they don't smell it themselves.

momotron

2012-07-23 12:44:50

wizzup you mean their breath smells terrible? If that's what you mean then it's true because after the prolonged absence of food gives your breath a bitter smell (guessing from the stomach acids). But if it's from the food they eat then they don't really have an excuse :P In the morning all I eat were a few left overs from the earlier after sundown meal and drink lots of water… shouldn't make you smell :P

Tell me about it, I had to walk for 1.5 hours the other day because of the unbearable smell of sweat combined with the ramadan breath on the buses.

It's quite the tradition over here actually, people bet online on the first city to make it to the news due to a ramadan beating.
