Making Simba plausible to use

Simba's a great color bot for Runescape, but it's in competition with a lot of reflection bots that do a lot better in many actions. I'm not sure if you guys have any desire to compete or be user friendly, but the bot at it's current state is a pain to use, especially for mass botting.

Some very basic features that are missing:
  • Tabs instead of two windows per bot running
  • More user friendly (split the development and end user)
  • Support for proxies (multi-logging)
  • Global management (signing in with your Villavu account, saving settings)

Obviously my list is biased based on the features I want, and I know this is an open source project so plugins/extensions can be made. This is just a suggestion to improve Simba to make it more suitable for Runescape botting. You guys can go ahead and reply to this post and criticize me (why don't you run it on virtual machines? use multiple VPNs, just stop being lazy and switch windows instead of tabs, etc) but when you have to state "just do this instead," there's obviously something missing from Simba.

I don't think the goal of Simba is for the developers/scripters to develop an end program that is easy and pleasing to those who do not contribute. The community as a whole works for the betterment of Simba and its scripts.

Also, most of those other Runescape "bots" sell premium scripts or features. They develop those in a way to encourage users to spend money on the premium stuff.

Tabsis available in beta version of Simba.

Agree with that, would be kind of nice for a dev version and user version, but we have install guide, FAQ, and many tutorials that help out. There is a bit of a learning curve but not too much.

We are not much into mass bottling/gold-farming so that will not be happening.

A script manager is being worked on very hard and will be out eventually, it will let you log in, manage scripts on cloud, etc.

Aye yo everyone, don't be mean to this guy he is really cool :].

And also we are a programming community 1st, blotting community 2nd.
All very good suggestions though!

1) Simba cant multi thread
2) You don't want it to be open source?
3)
4) You can save your settings, just save the script. Lol.

There's plenty of similar 'premium' scripts sold on SRL by individual members. And I would prefer to have programs that use premium scripts as a source of funding for the project than having an incomplete program.

I understand that Simba is a community meant more for developers who contribute, but what's the use of having a great tool that's open source when it's difficult for end users? Imagine this: Wikipedia, where everyone can contribute, completely ad-free, but take out the usability, and what do you have? Instead of being a terrific website that millions of users visit, it would just be a small community of contributors that read eachother's articles.

Once again, as an end-user, it's very hard for me to keep up with it all. The website is a maze when you're trying to download the program, and it's probably more confusing when running beta versions.

Right. I'm glad I had your help when setting mine up, or I would have given up and never used Simba. The community seems a lot better than Powerbot in terms of helpful users.

You can't just assume it will be used for mass botting. Proxies can also be used as a security feature to lower ban rates. You're also assuming everyone would only use one account. Even with two accounts, these features are pretty basic and useful. Again, imagine a browser with no tabs or proxy feature. Sure, a lot of people wouldn't mind, but it's helpful.

1) What does that have to do with anything? These suggested features can still be used without multi-thread.
2) I never stated that.
4) Right, but it's hard to manage when you're using multiple computers.

All very valid points. However, selling of scripts is not allowed on Villavu where Simba is based and developed so Villavu is not intending to please the seller or buyers of these "premium" scripts.

The way Wikipedia is different from Simba, is that "leechers" from Wikipedia do no harm to the people who contribute to the site. That is not necessarily the case with Simba. Creating a completely user friendly program that requires no prior reading or knowledge would open the doors to an influx of leechers. A large portion of the scripters and developers of Simba do not use the program and scripts to gold farm like many leechers would and do. This means the majority of the people who actively develop and help with Simba would be negatively affected. Our community is so tight and knowledgeable because if you want to get all you can get out of Simba you have to learn about it.

when you want to download just go to wizzup.org

proxies for smart would make more sense, proxy each java environment to be a different IP or something

all he wants is us to essentially turn into the leech infested powerbot/epicbot/etc. No thx. our community isnt based upon lazy leechers like yourself wanting everything easier to access (even though its EXTREMELY easy to already access it). this community is about learning how to script and just learning in general. we build friendships here, and many of the members here dont even play rs anymore. if you want a super leech-centric bot, this really isnt the place for u.

I'm pretty sure this has been discussed a long time back… but the majority of the people here are happy with the way Simba is.

Having said that, it would be better to have Simba more user friendly for less intellectual individuals.

I think it's fine the way it is, people who can't read a simple guide should go to an institute for the mentally challenged instead of botting.

I agree Simba still needs some features and it isn't perfect, but I felt it was extremely easy to get set up and start using thanks to all the guides available.
As it stands right now I'm not interested in using anything else(Yes I've tried the leading alternatives) besides Simba at this point in time.

Also I love that it is open source, I don't like using a script that I just add to my account and can't see the source code. I wanna be able to go through scripts I'm using to make tweaks of my own, and to check for anything sketchy.

Just my 2 cents.

If you make an effort to look at all the helpful guides that countless people have made, it's actually quite easy to use Simba. I wouldn't call it unusable (as the thread title suggests), it's just not convenient for people like you to use it to goldfarm. Sorry about that.

I do agree with the part of multiple IP's . If there's one thing jagex can harm us botters, is that we are sometimes with 2 or more accounts botting at once, at the same IP, and this is something very easily detectable. If there would be a proxy feature in SMART, they will never be able to mass-ban all your accounts because they can't know which accounts are of one person. :) I really am a little worried about the bot-optimus-thing and this may be one of the ways they want to harm us :(

About the other things I agree with the others. This site has no intention of making money so far, and does have intention of educating people, which I really like! This should stay the same. Although, it would also be fun to make money with your own scripts just like RSbuddy… That would also be nice, because there will always be leechers because they're just not into scripting.. why not let them pay? :) :stirthepot:

P.S. if someone already knows a way to use proxies on different smart's , please let me know with a PM.

simba may lack these features, but who cares?

for me it's not hard to click a download button, fill out the settings and hit play, isn't that what you do on any other bot?
also, it may not look all fancy like powerbot, but it works, and it works perfectly.

I would like the proxy thing. Maybe a max of say, two?
It would be useful for collecting colors over multiple accounts, because they tend to change.

Xenemorph, I'm not too concerned about the user-friendliness of Simba since I'm not an active developer at the moment. I'm more concerned about when you said the website is a maze when it comes to downloading Simba. Could you be more specific? What exactly was confusing?

I added "quick links" to the top of the forum quite some time ago that was to guide new users on where to start. Go to the forum hompage and you'll see it near the top. Maybe it doesn't stand out enough? If you're talking about www.villavu.com then I can understand. That "portal" page isn't very organized, and we are working hard on a new, much more helpful one that should be in place soon (I reopened the project a couple days ago).

Part of my job is to keep the forums organized and understandable to everyone, so any feedback is appreciated.

E: I do have a quick thing to say about the user-friendliness of Simba. Keep in mind that it's still a young program and since there is no profit involved, development is done in the developer's spare time, so it's understandable that some desired features aren't yet included.

Although this forum, and 95% of Simba's users use the program for Runescape, it's not exactly what it was written for; RS just happens to be one of the best applications to use Simba. The developers are more concerned about supplying a working Simba program (in general, not specifically for RS) rather than any RS-specific content. Simba isn't a client written for RS-botting (like other bots), it's just a program that's utilized for botting in RS.

I'm not saying that Simba won't evolve into what you're suggesting, I'm just giving a short explanation as to why it's not that way right now. :)

To add into coh3n's last few lines.. That means everything you love that simba does, for runescape, is in the form of a plugin, not built into the program (smart etc) which allows simba to grow easier if anyone wants to make a plugin to do.. anything you want it to do (proxies for smart? etc)

You can actually run multiple scripts in Simba ever since its first release. You just could never run more than one SMART with one Simba(.exe) instance. With the latest Simba and SMART this will be possible. The updates will reach you eventually. Matter of days, perhaps two weeks, tops.

If you mean split the development and end user by hiding the editor and exposing user friendly forms, I don't see that happen anytime soon. Perhaps if someone wants to waste a lot of time on creating it. I don't think it will be very useful. In the end Simba is simply a program you can write and run programs/scripts in. Of course someone could make a ``script runner'', but that's not our goal and we don't really intend to make this.

As for proxies, that's not really a task for Simba, especially managing them. You see, Simba is more of a development tool. We (at least I) don't work on pretty forms with just a play button. Yes, it is perfectly possible to make some sort of ``Player manager and script manager'' and we are in fact working on a script manager, but mainly to keep the scripts of everyone up to date; not to make it really easy for everyone to macro runescape.

(E: I'm not sure how Java does proxies, but you might be able to add this to SMART - or someone could probably do it anyway. There are tons of ways to proxy a program, I'm not sure if Simba needs support for this)

You could see it as a small barrier to keep the laziest away. In the end it is the community that keeps this place alive. If everyone would just drop in, download Simba and move on we wouldn't have been here for over seven years.

By the way, things have gotten much more simple compared to say, two or three years ago. People would have lots of different SCAR versions, they'd have to download SRL manually, etc. Now there's one Simba version (except for the development versions, for developers and testers) and Simba will automatically keep you up to date. Granted, the updaters require some work, but they've recently seen some more work. You have to remember we built this all from scratch. Coding is, most of the time, not a simple and fun business. The end result is typically great and rewarding, but running into lots of bugs is annoying. In the end, you're just happy it works. I'm sure that if we had a much larger and active Simba development team we'd eventually come up easy to use forms and all. But that's not case, and no one here makes a living getting/selling Runescape bots out the public. And for good reasons, too.
