Jagex faking numbers to make them look better?!?! NEVER! Kind of wondered the same thing ever since I seen it posted. You know 98% of those accounts are people making multiple accounts and bot throwaway accounts.

It's a "live" counter. I quoted live because there is probably still a 15 minute MINIMUM delay.

Do you think it's a coincidence that facebook is down too? :D

I was creating an account during this, and it froze my browser.
Tried continuing to create an account about 5 mins ago, and it went to:

Java doesn't play nice with time changes while its running. Assuming that's what Rs's server code is actually written in, which I believe it is.

Not sure if anyone has ever tried running a minecraft server (also java based) but if the time gets updated on the system, or something affects it's time keeping process it shouts out a warning that it can't keep up. That's on a server with about 3-4 people playing, I can only imagine how much havoc it would rain down on servers with even just +400 people connected…

Really not surprising that they crashed.

Runescape runs on time based "ticks" wherein actions only happen every time a tick occurs. I'm pretty sure I remember reading somewhere the ticks happen every 250ms. So in essence if you and another guy do an action within 250ms of each other, then you will actually perform that action at the same time in the game. But when that leap second happened the time jumped ahead 1 second, and the server got confused because it was trying to measure it's ticks and it was waiting for 250ms, but then that count just jumped up 1000ms from the leap second and it didn't know what to do. Boom. Go down.

It actually runs in 600ms (100ticks=1min), due to latency its usually ~615 though. So the RS server constantly refers to an 'official world clock' to track the time? Doesn't it run on its own clock and hence any changes to the 'official world clock' will not affect it? (other than the server time being 1 sec late)

Ok,so 600ms ticks. Most likely it bases on the system clock, and the system clock would be getting its time from some time server somewhere which sets its time on some atomic clock that updated for the leap second. Servers from some of the most trafficked websites on the Internet also went down
