It's a little late, but I figured now is a good time to post that, although I just graduated from high school a month ago, I got a full time job(That I actually started right after graduating :p) and now work 60 hours a week(20 hours overtime = 1.5 * pay/hour <3). They are paying for my apprenticeship, and teaching me everything I need to become an electrician. I have to say, I'm probably doing the best out of everyone else who just graduated :p

That being said, the idea that "OMG You have to go to college or you won't be successful in life" is definitely a lie. :)

e: People at work say I look "Dangerous".

Right on man! I totally agree, going to college will give you a better chance of being employed at a higher-level job. And better is getting worse and worse :p

Anyways, you only need a lot of money if you're into the whole "materialistic" life thing, which I for one am not!

Indeed, but you are picking up a trade (Which is basically trade school/form of college) most people who don't go to college don't do anything with their lives and work multiple fast food jobs to maintain a very basic life.

I already have a truck, and tools. Currently paying off a computer, but other than that I'm definitely not materialistic. It's all being saved :)

There is a difference, but I literally mean that I've been told my entire life that I NEED to get a 4+ year degree

First of all, that is great you are sinking your teeth into a viable future job.
One thing you might want to consider is, do you want to be working with your hands when you're older? Also, do you get any pension or benefits?

Nice! but definitely put away some money in case things don't work out and you decide to go to college instead.

you are doing just fine, but some companies might like a college diploma to prove that you know something.

I graduated high school, everyone said I needed to go to college to get a good job. Menwhile one of my friends that I graduated with got a job, another one dropped out of high school and started his own carpentry buisiness. The one that I graduated with is doing good, has a ski boat, quads, trucks, guns, and all sorts of fun toys. My other friend that dropped out of high school and started his own carpentry buisiness now makes 100k a year.

I first graduated from college with a AS degree, and they said I needed a BS degree to get a good job. So I got a BS degree, and then tried to find a job. Meanwhile, they said I really needed a Masters degree. I finally got a job 6 months later. I now am starting where my friends were when I graduated from HS. Hard to say if it was worth it, but college sure was fun…

What people say you "need" to go to college to get a "good" job, they mean getting a job that actually requires a degree: engineering, law, medicine, etc.

Of course you can learn a trade and make a lot of money (usually working loads of overtime) without a degree, but generally there will be more wear and tear on your body physically and your earnings potential will be capped (until you move up into management, etc).

In my field though, technicians (skilled laborers) can usually move up into an engineering position given that they have 10+ years of experience, show that they can learn book knowledge and apply it, and have the drive. The hands on experience and overall knowledge of work operations is really useful, so they bring a lot to the table.

Getting the degree is basically just a leap forward and a stepping stone (however, if you get a degree, and you're lazy and unmotivated, may God help you). You might get a job somewhere, but you'll never move up.

So, it seems like you enjoy what you are doing and are motivated. Once you gain good experience and get older, you could look into getting an electrical engineering position in charge of other electricians (less wear and tear, etc).

Also, I am weary sometimes of people with lots of "toys". A lot of the time when people spend freely, they came into a lot of money as an heir, or they can be far into debt. If it's all his own money (especially starting his own company), then I'd say, sick life :D.

The vision and drive that many successful self-employed people have could have easily gotten them a degree, but they planned on starting a business, didn't need a degree, and knew they could pull it off. (Although a degree an be a fallback option if things turn south or to show some credentials without a company reputation yet)

To be honest it is all about reputation and most college degree holders tend to find there way out in the real world and become successful.

But if you like your job and you believe it is a great job for the future than go for it! and I am happy for you :).
