Smart & Java 7

If anyone who has tried using Java7 with SMART could report their problems here, that would be useful in ensuring there are no difficulties when the move is finally made. I personally just emerged java7 and tried loading SMART and didn't have any difficulties, but did not extensively test it.

I have both on my comp (java6 and java7), is there a way for me to see which one it is using?
Or does it use the first one from the path variable ? I was also wondering if there is a way to increase the memory available to the java process ? I do get OufOfMemoryErrors sometimes.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask.

mezzo: there is a way to. you need to call SmartSetMaxJVMMem(mb: integer); before calling SmartSetup, i.e. before loading Smart the first time. This changes in v7.1 however, there it is an init argument to SmartSpawnClient

Strange, some people have complained about poor performance on Java 7, perhaps it's just their computers.

when i used java 7u4 i was getting 9fps and id have to run in compatability mode for windows xp service pack 2 to get smart to even open.
i downgraded to java 6u32 and am back to 50 fps and no difficultys. not sure what the problem is with java 7 but thats my experience with it.

It used to have a problem with a massive lag/fps drop for me but I currently use Java 7 now.. Whenever I need to compile it I have to you 6 though due to the Canvas.java being outdated. That's about it.

Sometimes I get the occasional stack trace in the Console but rarely. Most people also get an error if you switch smart from safemode to some other mode.

Other than that, J7 just lags you and smart can't compile with it for me.

I was using java 7 until recently and I downgraded because I thought I was getting an error because of it, turns out I had a setting wrong in Simba, so really no problems with J7.

Java 7 cause the FPS to be very VERY low ingame, besides that everything else works/functions fine.
The hardware is not a problem, computer is powerful.
As seen in link in my sig: http://villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?p=848708
Many people have FPS lag ingame with 7, besides that I have never seen/seen people complain about any other problems with 7.

I get 12 FPS ingame with 7, running on a newly upgraded 3rd Gen i5/8GB Ram/GT550. Nothing too serious though, occasionally bot missclicks from the lag.

I used to use java7 without any problems (about a month ago) but then formatted my computer and decided to go with java 6

I've been experiencing unusually poor smart performance for around 2 weeks; About 7fps constantly even with slider maxed.

It is nothing to do with Java 7 as I have both 6 and 7 installed and have tested them both with the same result.

One thing I have noticed is a marked drop in Simba(hence smart) CPU usage. So it's not like its choked/throttled by the system rather by itself.

One thing that I have been asked and heard so many times is when running Simba on any java7+ version it will keep pulling the smart window to front. For an example if you were playing another video game or watching a you-tube video the Smart client will keep pulling itself to front, so you will have to constantly minimize it.

My smart got stuck sometimes in java 7 (loading screen), but not with java 6.

This is technically an implementation bug in Java, but I'll look into it.

It looks like on some people's machines, the mechanics SMART uses to auto-find the JVM dynamic library fails, and hence SMART won't open. This should be evident in the debug output. The work around is to manually pass the path to your jvm.dll to SMART either (<7.1) through the SmartSetJVMPath method (I think that's what it was called) or (>=7.1) by passing it (the jvm.dll path) as the appropriate argument to SmartSetup.

Using Smart 6.9 I can use both JRE 6 and 7— and they both run equally terribly for me. I'm using a Windows XP VM though, so I'm pretty sure that's the issue rather than JRE.
