It's called "Big Java," by Cay Horsetmann. I'm new to java and picked this up at my schools library sale. Would you guys recommend it for learning the basics?

Never heard of it. Read it and see how it works out for you. There are also tons of tutorials/articles on the internet (more than you'd ever find in a book), so I recommend doing a lot of browsing.

I do not recommend buying books to learn java. I got a few lying around here too. Just follow as much internet tutorials as you can. Start with easy small game tutorials, like space invaders. Then learn OOP, libraries etc etc.

How can you possibly recommend a game as a learning project? It sure is interesting, but is a bit too complex for someone who is just starting.

I have Inside Java 2 by Cay s. Horstmann and Gary Cornell. It has some good material about applets and graphical components.

Can't believe it's still up after all those years. I started there way before I joined srl. Look how long that was ago :P.

Good place to learn and try things out. I recommend doing the online java basics class (its free if you post something on fb, which you can then delete.)

Well everyone has their style :) It doesn't really matter, but starting with a complex project might be overwhelming and might discourage the learner.
