Im going off to University next year and im interested what you guys have to say about it all. Anything really.

Whats it all really like?

Im kind of scared shittless to be honest. To think in 4 mounths ill be living on my own doing everything by myself, it's very daunting. The best thing i can cook is super noodles.

Is it all it's cracked up to be?

Any tidbits of advice you guys can offer?

Stuff you wish you knew when you first started, can even be obvious things you didnt realise when you first started out, like my brother's only advice was never go out without keys and phone :P.

Thanks

put a condom in every drawer in your room.
put a condom in every pocket of clothing you wear(take out b4 laundry…)
have fun

edit: seriously…
It's not bad at all living on your own. I moved out on my 17th bday(didn't get along with rents)…
Just stockpile on ramen noodles and eggs(both cheap). Try to not waste your money cause you NEVER know when you'll need it… :/

Just remember those days when you started high school. I bet it was scary and you had the same/similar question. Now the answer is almost the same: your scared cause u are bout to meet new friends and start a new chapter of ur life. U just have to get used to it, just like u did on the beginning of high school. As for the condoms, stock on those if you are the party/clubbing kind, if you are: they will disappear in no time. One last thing, save all your money and any cash you receive, save it for emergencies/rent/food/ect. Don't throw away it on almost any cr@p.

Go to class each and everyday. As easy as this might sound accompanied with the low amount of classes, you will find yourself skipping class by month 2. So my advice is don't skip classes; only skip if you have gotten ahead in class, but even then try to come to class everyday.

Make sure you have visited the college at least once with someone who is familiar with the place so that the names of the different buildings will become at least familiar for you.

Don't go out to buy the newest edition of textbooks, first email each of your profs and ask them if the textbook edition recommended is the absolute requirement or if you go with an older edition. This will save you up to $300 guaranteed.

People are as scared as you are and if you able to show a little courage by talking to one of them in one of your classes on the first day, you just made a friends in college gratz! :D

Know when to ask for help and when to rest. Being able to ask for help when you know that you do not know the subject will save you a lot of hours of hair pulling. And with more time on your hands, you are able to rest, play, eat, etc.

Don't give in to the "college lifestyle". You went to school for a reason, which I'm assuming is more than becoming a party-driven alcoholic dropping out of school with thousands of dollars in loans to repay. Just remember that. ;)

For me it's GPA ftw. Go to classes, and be happy you did learn something from them.

Personally, I say to make sure you experience college/university. I live at home and commute to an expensive private school in the area. I have not experienced college as it was meant to be experienced.

But! BUT! — Make sure you can control yourself and don't get overwhelmed. I have seen at least 1/5 of my freshman class fail out on required freshman courses just because they decided they had to get wasted on Friday night, knowing that they had class on Saturday (yes Freshman are required to take a Saturday class).

1.Go to class every day!

2.Don't party too much, but have your fun. It's good for the soul. I didn't at first but I do more now and it relieves the stress of school.

3.Learn some easy things to cook that aren't super unhealthy, you'll save money and be healthier than buying fast food all the time.

4.Live on campus if you can. It's amazing walking to class, first 2 years I didn't live on campus but now I do and it's so awesome.

5.Go to class every day, but also do all homework/study. Make the grades.

That's all I've got. Do those things and you'll have a great experience!

And remember, work hard, play harder. ;)

Pass a exam than go party ;) and keep that going throughout your college years.

Good Luck, you will find different type of people, be smart on choosing your new friends!

Condoms. Keep food simple, cooking in dorms is bad. Be cheap as hell with your money for food and such, don't tip well. STUDY A LOT, and keep on top of classes, don't gimp on reading from your texts. Meet LOTS of people within the first week, the more you know the more fun you'll have both during the weekends and while studying with them in groups. USE your resources (tutors and libraries). Thats about it haha.

A lot of good advice has been posted already. Here's a few little tips I think are really important:

Don't buy a book for a class unless it is absolutely essential. Your teacher will most likely say so. Some people end up buying $300 books they never use.

Try to make some friends. It was really hard for me because I didn't really know how, I hadn't had to make friends in so long. That was way back freshman year of high school lol. I had to just nut up, and talk to new people.

DO NOT SCHEDULE 8AM CLASSES! I had a Physics class at 8am my first semester. Holy shit it sucked. I will never schedule an early class ever again. I skipped it way too much and suffered academically for it. Oh, and use ratemyprofessors when you schedule your classes. You can avoid some really bad profs if your smart about scheduling.

Actually talk to your profs. Getting to know your professors can do wonders for your gpa.

Study.

I graduated high school in 3 years and just finished my first year of college at age 17. High school didn't prepare me at all for studying.

Time management! You dont have to learn for every classes, but u should not start learning for an exam the last day. Nobody is gonna tell you to learn every day. Easy to fail like this. Keep it in mind. :)

Try to befriend the really smart people as you will find they'll become a valuable tool when the exams come. Also find a room with thick walls! I remember waking up in the middle of the night to screams from a couple having sex next door. Although I did get my revenge ;)

One Tip: ENJOY IT - it won't last forever

I'm in my third year now and it is by far the best experience of my life so far. Balance of work and fun can be hard but just make sure you get the grade you want and it will be perfect. You will fit right in and love it. If not, change it. It's nothing like school, the ball is totally in your court. Which can be a bad thing but as long as you don't lose sight of what you want to accomplish, you will be fine.

tl;dr ENJOY IT

What i felt i should have done a better job at first was to be more social and open to new things, dont close any doors just yet. also join clubs, think about your future and how good it would be to put that club/organization your in for your resume. Be social with your teachers, ask them for advice on what teachers to take in your further classes. Most importantly go visit your advisor when you get a free chance, when you cant get into a class because its full, and you have a good relationship with your advisor, they will get you in.

Just finished up my freshman year along with my first summer semester a week ago. From what I learned I agree 100% with others.

Put effort in to your classes and you will go far, but don't dwell on a test or course if you do badly its not the end of the world and you can always change it.

Don't stress over a major just yet a ridiculous number of people change theirs numerous times.

Talk to your adviser and pick classes on time, they are there to help you!

Following up on help the college really does want you to succeed (more classes you take the more they make) so there is a lot of help available you just have to look.

Leave your dorm often! You can't socialize in isolation

Make friends fast and you will be much happier, if you have to talk to your parents, siblings, friends back home or a significant other on a daily basis go for it. But don't let them consume your life.

Go to class! Being tired or sick is no excuse it's likely less than an hour and fifteen minutes and you'll be happy you went you can sleep and feel sorry for your self after

School before partying. You can party after you make the grade whereas those partiers will be having to explain to their parents and worse themselves.

Best of all thing positive and good luck! Don't live with regrets or fear your freshmen year will fly by!
