I stumbled across this post: http://me.veekun.com/blog/2012/05/05/python-faq-webdev/ and I found it quite a pleasure to read, even though I already know Python web development. Perhaps it will interest some of you.

From the same blog, this post may also interest you: http://me.veekun.com/blog/2012/04/09/php-a-fractal-of-bad-design/

I read the PHP article;

I have to agree on many accords. As someone who almost fully programs in PHP, there is much wrong with the language. The problem is as a language it is very widespread. It is used on almost every website and by far is the choice language to use.

Due to this, it becomes hard to compete if you use anything but. In freelance work nearly all clients wish to have their sites programmed in PHP. Due to the large amount of PHP/PHPCommunitys surrounding the web, it grows larger; it is the easiest, most accessible language to learn.

Even with its flaws, it is a quite powerful language; however quirky.

In that case I'm happy I have the luxury that I usually start my own projects, I really would never want to go back to PHP for anything. :)
It's not that I do a lot of web development (It's terrible in general but Python makes it quite bearable), but I could never make a site with PHP and be happy with it.

I work as mainly a freelancer, so about 95% of my time is spent doing PHP.
It is for this reason that even when I begin to start my own projects I often times rely on PHP to complete it; I am much more competent, much quicker and my code is of a much higher standard.
It is hard to motivate yourself to do something when it feels as though you have a more than sufficient tool at your disposal!

I do agree with the flaws of the language as a whole; however, I never see myself branching into any other language for the majority of my work - web work that is.

At some point in freelancing, you'll be doing so well that you'll be able to pick your jobs/work. When you reach this point you can certainly state that you won't do the project in PHP. IMO, any job that doesn't have to work with (existing) php code is worth writing in another language; be that Ruby or Python.

I hate almost all, if not all, web development orientated languages. From markup to server side languages. Python got its own problems, but I agree it is better then PHP.
