OMG…I don't think I will ever go back to HDD lol. Everything loads so fast and my boot time is like…wow. Can't wait till Ivy Bridge comes out so I can upgrade my CPU. :p

Once you buy a ssd, you never go back to HDD.

Ofc you keep a HDD for storage but I mean, you'll never install your OS on a HDD again :p

Yeah…I still have my 1TB HDD for storage. Kinda sucks I only got a 60 gb SSD, shoulda prolly went for the 120gb because im already at 27gb left lol. Pretty much have everything I want installed that I want to load fast on it except for some games in the future. Guess I can fit a couple games on it but I would have loved to get a 120gb hah.

I got 60gb too and 1tb wd caviar black for storage.

60gb is enough tbh. All you need is to put your OS on it, all your program that run on startup (antivirus, dropbox, steam, skype etc) and program you want to load fast and use frequently, like chrome, firefox, microsoft office etc.

Then you should still have 20gb for bigger program. Visual studio, photoshop, sony vegas or whatever you want.

Games: It depend on the game. I noticed that for BF2, it speed up the map load by a lot, but for bf3 it speed it up by maybe 30%? The fps stay the same obviously. All in all I'd say you shouldn't put game on SSD.

Lol we got the same HDD. :p But yeah, I have all the startup programs that I need on the SSD and I still have 27gb so I should be fine. I want to install atleast diablo 3 on my SSD but not sure what else.

I'm looking to build (or have someone build) a computer with a 128gb - 256gb SSD.

Do external hard drives have long lives? Obviously I'd get one if I had a SSD of that size (My computer contains a BUNCH of media)

And congrats on your new piece of hardware!

Never used an external HDD. As long as you don't drop it I guess it would last long. :p

In 12 years of computer use, I never had a HDD that failed me. I must be lucky. I keep hearing story how everyone lose their data because their HDD crash or some crap.

Mine has one. I actually have a curse type thing involving computers and laptops.

The first time I got a laptop, the hard drive crashed a while afterwards.

We got a new laptop, the old one was shitty, and the new one was mysteriously stolen by my grandparents :P

The third one… it really got stolen.

The fourth one, I dropped it and its screen broke. I broke off the screen and hooked the keyboard up to a monitor. Then, the laptop's battery got really messed up. I have to keep it plugged in at all times, it doesn't gain any battery. Also, it overheats, the sound which used to beautiful earlier on in its life sucks. Its basically a disabled laptop.

Oh, and all in the past 5 or so years.

I'm looking into a desktop computer. Those have never failed me haha.

Same. Worst I had happen was one of my SATA "L shape" plug guides for a HDD cracked off because I was tugging it too hard lol. Lost so many runescape screenshots from that one >.<. Ive heard of people fixing it but I've never gotten around to it.

eska do you have TRIM for your SSD?

Holy crap…I just enabled AHCI mode and now I don't even see the "Welcome" screen after the windows logo. It just boots straight to my desktop with everything already opened/my messenger already logged in LOL.

I haven't either, but believe me, yes, we've been lucky. My dad's 3 year old desktop had a HDD that failed about a month ago. Shortly after, my mom's did. Now, that was just really bad luck for both of them to do that, but it happens and yeah we've been lucky haha. I only have 1 computer left with a HDD though…I have a Macbook Air that has it's own SSD. :D

Yes on my desktop, no on my vista laptop.

I also made all the optimisation to make sure the SSD won't get worn off by useless write/read sequence.

For my vista laptop, doesn't really matter since my SSDs got garbage collection (kinda like trim but it only does it when the computer is idle).

With an SSD, are there extra responsibilities/tasks you have to take on such as this TRIM?

Total

2012-04-18 21:53:08

I don't know if I would call it a responsibility, its just a mode that you enable on windows 7 that helps it maintain access speed for a longer time than normal. You don't need to use it, it will just make it be faster in the long run.

I'm pretty sure trim's garbage collection is only 'active' when idle as well; though, I'm not an expert.

Not bad. :p My ivy bridge better be 7.9!

Also ran this with a bunch of stuff open…dunno if that affects it or not. Might try later with a fresh reboot.

My WEI for Prcesssor is 7.6 on a 1055T, I'm sure it will be a lot better if you close programs/overclock it.

WEI is a lame benchmark though anyways :p.
