Hey all! I'll be headed off to college in the fall, which means at least one good thing - new laptop!

Thing is….which one?!

I've narrowed it down to the Alienware M14 and the Dell XPS Series. Does anyone have any experience with any of these laptops?

—SPEC COMPARISON—

Alienware in Red
XPS in Blue

Hard Drive - 750 GB 7200 rpm vs. 750 GB 5400 rpm

RAM - 8 GB DDR3 @1333GHz, Turbo Boost vs. 6GB DDR3@1600GHz, Turbo Boost

Graphics - 3.0 GB NVIDIA vs. 1.5 GB NVIDIA

Monitor Size - 14 in. vs. 15 in.

Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Rock

Alienware has better fans and volume. My cousin has one and its a beast. I recommend it over XPS and whats 1 inch of screen compared to the other specs… Double gcard? Is there much of a choice here :)
Good luck on your college endevours

You can find a Xps with the same as the Alienware or even make it yourself and it will still be couple hundred $$ cheaper Alienwares are over prices computers

Thanks for the advice! Kind of what I was leaning toward. I've used 14 in. Ltops for a long time now and never found them too small.

Should have added, all the specs are off customized versions of both with beefed up graphics and ram. XPS is indeed about a hundred bucks cheaper.

You get that cool alien head symbol on the front :spot:
you'd be the envy of your friends lol
Dell makes alienware, and the shell is harder than an xps. It's your laptop choice, but the alienware would be a better choice in my opinion.

Alienwares are great but overpriced.
Dell is great at a great price.
My solution: get a Dell and enjoy it.

I've never seen an XPS run, so I have no quarrel with the XPS but I've never heard anything bad about an alienware

Has the 14 inch screen ever seemed too small for gaming or multitasking?

Man don't get either of those comps, they are overpriced for sure. If you live in the US, get a nice looking laptop with good specs and good reviews from Newegg.com or pricewatch.com

I've had bad experiences with dell. I'd just stay away from them, try other brands that are better, but still ok-priced.

Alienware is no. Overpriced. As cause said, try newegg. They have nice laptops, and you'll actually get your money's worth!

I would honestly go for neither of the two. If you look around (online) you can most likely get a custom built one for maybe 10% more than the cost of the parts (possibly a little more as it's laptop).
It also sort of depends where you live, I don't particularly like Dell and in Australia, Dell owns Alienware (they bought the au one) and everything that they sell seems to be $400-$1000 more than the American version (which is still overpriced).

Under no circumstances (in my opinion) should you buy the Alienware, they seem to charge 20-50% more just for the bloody emblem and fancy lights.

What is your price range?

Its early enough that price isn't a big deal now. I'd much rather buy an expensive one than three cheaper ones in the same amount of time.

Are you still trying to decide between the dell and the dell?
