Potential legal issues concerning SOF, April 2nd update

I want to know about the legal issues involved with the new Squeal of Fortune.
Can Jagex sue a scripter/botter for making/using a script that logs on a bunch of accounts and spins the wheel?
They now sell spins, so I wonder wonder what legal issues this brings. Anyone know what legal issues this could bring?

I don't see how this would change something. It's still a game right? You are not stealing their intellectual property, you are not stealing money from their either.

Nothing illegal about making a color bot for runescape really.

Go ask a lawyer. As far as I can tell, it should be legal, but is a bit useless/waste of time to do. Only thing they could get you for as far as I can tell is breaking their ToS.

But even then it isn't illegal. The most they can/will do is ban you.

Yes, how would this be anymore "illegal" to Fagx now?

I don't see how it would be any different from any other bot, especially as the items that have any worth are untradeable so you wouldnt be able to profit from it irl.

That 10m is untradeable, it can only be used to spend on items for yourself.

I've said a way to get around this before.. U got to the summoning shop.. buy 10m worth of shards.. go to the petshop and trade the 10m worth of shards for 10m cash.. it's a 1-1 ratio so you lose nothing.. Just gain 10m cash lol.

IF you can even get the stupid wheel to land on something good that is.

Yeah true.

Personally, I think there's a formula to it. It's not completely random. If I know where I click it, I have a good idea of the 3-4 squares where it'll land. It'll always land on a common or medium item, but that still says to me that there is some structure to it and it's not completely random.

No! It has nothing to do with when you press the button! Your prize is chosen randomly, theres even a new option to double click the button and instanty claim your prize.

You'll be just fine, don't worry. Gold farming is more a problem to them atm.

It is illegal in the game, but not in real life…

Doesn't differ from other forms of botting…

I wouldn't consider it any more illegal as playing an arcade game. (not that I agree with the update)

Although, I'm ashamed of Jagex for such shady tactics to make money… they knew they would be able to get away with it because it "isn't technically gambling" (a mod said that). Its just the thought of it that makes me sick…

no there are no potential legal issues with SOF because its not real gambling (not betting RL money to gain RL money)

now people hacking accounts and charging spins to your account i would say yes there are leagl issues with that(because they dont require u to reenter CC to buy spins lol)

Thanks, good points.
But I was mainly concerned if they would consider it stealing from their game (their profits from selling spins) if someone used a script, sold, etc.
I.. don't think they would care now. Somewhere, Investors own the majority of the company now. Any attention is good.

I'm assuming jagex is now based in the US after the recent thread I saw, and as a UK law student, I'm unaware of US laws. However, in the UK, you dont have to bet money for it to be considered gambling.

Saying that, paying RL money to gain money isn't always seen as gambling anyway, eg the 10p machines at bowling alleys.

The reality is, as long as jagex put 18+ to buy. somewhere when purchasing more tokens, theyre untouchable.

Somebody on twitter said that it should be illegal as its letting underage people gamble but they replied saying that as you always get something it doesn't constitute gambling. So if you bet £20 and lose and they give you 1p back then it doesn't count as gambling??

They dont disallow you from having multiple accounts, you can make as many accounts as you want and spin as many times as you want.

The term illegal is being used wrong here… Breaking a rule in-game, is far different than doing something ILLEGAL in real life. These do not coincide in any way, shape, or form. You cannot get sued for making a script that closes off the squeal of fortune interface. If you could get sued, they'd do this to so many more people long long time ago, back in the aryan days…

agreed its a game its 100% difrent then real life.. look at perfect worlds games ALL of them have gambleing… nothing will happen rs is ok to do it.. they would not risk there game like that

Its not a question of law per se. The Jagex ToS/ToU will ram you up the ass like Impsoft, though.
