Well it appears that Andrew has indeed sold Jagex and Runescape included to a company based in New York called 'US firm Insight Venture Partners'.
I guess this explains the recent updates. Well, money is king.

Insight Venture Partners have a portfolio of lots of random stuff, doubt they care what occurs inside the game. I mean, these guys own part of twitter.

Aaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahaahha I can't get enough of this. Jagex needs money, and they are doing anything and everything they can in order to 'keep the game going', lol.
He told Games Industry that more capital was needed, in order for Runescape to progress, but UK investors were 'painfully shy and risk adverse'.
No, silly silly CEO, the reason why more capital is needed is because so many people are sick and fed up with the trashy updates which they provided, so they quit. They also somewhat brought this upon themselves by permanently banning a LOT of members(which may have been botted accounts, but still that was revenue coming into the company). I honestly hope the game turns around for the better… Maybe you'll be able to just buy gold soon enough.

If you read the article, you'll find that the company is actually worth a lot more, they just sold 75 million worth of shares over to the other company(which I forgot the name of already).

It looks like we have a new game to root for. Andrew wanted to keep RuneScape clean, and not sell gold since that would introduce a new audience into RuneScape. One he had seen taint other games, like WoW.
If runescape goes down hill, we can assume this new game will be as runescape was previously.

They have no-one to blame but themselves. Blaming us/other botters is not an excuse for the state of the game.
Pretty sure andrew hasn't been part of Jagex for at least a year now.

Andrew may not have been a public part, but I believe he was head of directors until recently. He only just now gave up ownership.

They basically still own the game, they just needed money and so they brought in a VC (Venture Capitalist). Unless the 75M shares was more than 49% of shares.

The company already owned %30 of Jagex before buying these extra shares. They are now the main shareholders holding more than %50 of the company

Hm.. Question is if they are going to be 100% about the money. If they are, it's rather possible "Optimus" will never come to be and bots will come back to what they were. More bots = more "players" = more members = more $$.

Once a VC owns your company, it's always about the money.

This. Game over.
I think even the CEO realized that it'll never end, so he essentially rage quit.

I honestly can say that I saw this coming.
Adding, what? $3 more to membership costs?
Adding 14 days of FREE membership to newly created accounts?
They're DESPERATE.
They put so much money into destroying bots, but what they didn't know was, bots bring in more revenue (Membership) than anything else in the game!
Let's hope everything turns out well with this new corp.
EDIT:
Not sure if anyone knows this, but they've also added video advertisements to free to play players. Every time you hop worlds.

Ahahaha that would actually be quite funny :D unbanning a bunch of epic accounts, which they could then sell to the public? Oh gosh the possibilities of this venture would be endless for profit! "Selling Sparc Mac1, the original account that started Tim's legacy" only 500 USD… oh my this could be evil ^_^

You guys seem to be forgetting a large number of gold farmers used illegitimate crest cards to buy members, essentially creating more problems for Jagex. Yes there would be more profit, just not as much as you think.

Ya, bot bring revenue, but botting also bring bad points. They took action, because bots were ruling this game before the bot nuke. Seriously, 1 out of 2 player was a bot before nuke… This bring us to the point where, after everyone get 99 in every skills after 1 and a half years, this game would be dead since players would had stop to play this game since there is nothing else to do.
Now, how games like runescape live and stay for soo long like World of Warcraft that try as hard as they can to maintain people? New Contents and Trying to make the game as long as they can to keep people and bring back new contents to make them even stay longer, but if they allow bot to run all over the place, it will also cause the end of the game, since when people will be done with botting, they will also leave since the goal of this game is to be maxed and get the best gear available. Well, lets people bot for 2 years without doing anything 24h/24h and I guarantee their wont be that much people left in 2 years.

Alright.
Instead of DESTROYING most bots all together, they should have went after gold farmers.
Not kids that want to enjoy life without sitting on their asses 10 hours a day clicking on a tree.

Agreed. Goldfarming and selling money for IRL cash was and still is the problem, not botting.

There's a game called WYD (With Your Destiny) and I haven't played it in some time, but it has a built in botting feature to let you AFK train. Jagex should do that, since it would only let you train skills.

There would have to be a strict limit on it though…they'd never do that because it'd be unfair to players who (supposedly) work hard legitimately, like SUOMI.

I'm talking about past hours on the game. Top players have 1000's of days into the game…wouldn't it be unfair if someone could start now and have 99's in everything?

Runescape 3.
Runescape 2 will still be available for anyone, I.E people who would most likely cry about all the time they've put into the game.
Idk I'm just throwing stuff around.

insight venture partners bought most of jagex a while ago, back in december-january actually.
And it wasnt just insight, there were about 1-2 other investment groups. Their stocks are private, if i reckon correctly

I didn't even read this thread. I just liked this quote from the article.
His mother famously cooked bacon, so Andrew could record the sound. It is still played whenever a Runescape player lights a fire
They update all the sounds except that one. Must have sentimental value or something.

I have herd that the "paying" goldfarmers are using stolen credit card details so at the end of the day Jagex had to refund the money back onto the credit cards meaning they lose money… Don't quote me on that, it was just something I herd.
